PLANNED TO MURDER.
Five Negroes Arrested In Alabama for
Attacking Family.
Opelika, Ala., August 30. —Monday
morning there were brought to this
city and lodged in the county jail five
negroes, supposed to he members of a
“Before Day” club, and Implicated in
an attempt to murder a family living
a few miles from this city, near Ciiewa
ciu postoffice, and there is great excite
ment in the neighborhood of the cap
ture and (lie attempt at the crime.
The capture was made through the
confession of two members of the
gang, secured after persistent effort on
tiie part of the citizens of the neigh
borhood. The two members state thnt
the negroes of the community had or
ganized for the purpose of murdering,
robbing and burning, and the first
family to receive this treatment nt
their hands was to have been Mrs.
Maggie Plott and her three children,
residing on a plantation near Chewa
cia
A negro by the name of John Cook
was to kill Mrs. Plott. and her daugh
ter, Miss Pearl Plott, aged about 18
y§ars. Another member of the .band
was to kill her two sons, .Tlin, aged 15,
and Riley, aged 12. The house was
then to be plundered, kerosene poured
upon It, and the bodies of the murdered
members of the family, and the whole
then burned.
The attempt to carry out the plot
was made on Sunday evening, Aug. 7,
Cook working at the window of Pearl
Plott's room .and another working un.
derneath the house. Cook had suc
ceeded in prying open the shutter,
which barred the window, but Pearl
was awakened by the noise, and called
to her brother. He arrived in the
room Jus-t as the negro was in the act
of climbing in at the window, and he
hastily fired his gun at him. missing
him, but frightening him and the ac
complice away.
The affair was kept &• quietly as
possible, except that the citizens ol
the neighborhood began at once a sys
tematic Inquiry into the matter, with
the hope of ultimately securing some
clew to the brutes and effecting thelt
arrest.
After about a week’s labors, a con
fession was secured from two of the
members of the gang, and Monday five
of them were taken into custody—John
Cook. Homer Peterson and Ella Peter
son being taken at Chewacla; Nancy
Mangrum In Bear 7, and Flotchet
Dawson was found in Opelika.
Winter’* Fearful Fi*t.
William Winter, the dramatic
critic, is thought by some to write
the worst hand of any man living.
There may have been giants in the
past, men like Horace Greeley, who
surpassed him, but no one his equal
remains. Some years ago Mr. Win
ter was traveling in Scotland and,
having had many amusing experi
ences, v. rote an account of them to
It. 11. Stoddard in New York. Mr.
Stoddard received the letter at
breakfast and, combining familiari
ty with the intuitions of the poet,
managed to make it out and en
joyed several good laughs, lie
glanced up at Mrs. Stoddard and
said: “It’s from William Winter.
Very funny. Want to read it ?”
“You know I can never read a word
of his writing,” answered Mrs. Stod
dard. “Oh, that doesn’t matter!”
replied Mr. Stoddard, tossing the
letter over. “It’s just as funny to
look at it.”

FIRST NEWS! BEST NEWS!
THE WORLD as the “Chief Champion hi America of Democratic Ideas” will be
the most interesting newspaper in the country in this Presidential cam
paign.
It already has a much larger daily circulation than any other morning news
paper in America.
We are beginning a campaign that promises to be memorable in history. By a
single act of inspired courage the Democratic leader has restored his party to its
old place as the instrument of enlightened reform, sane and practical liberalism,
clear-headed progressiveness and constitutional government
While the question of the standard of value remained an issue all other topics
were submerged and the Democracy could not play its historical part. In the
absence of that restraining force the Republican party has rioted m imperialism,
centralization, militarism, extravagance and privileged injustice. Now the time has
come when it can be called to account. Once more a party wisely, bravely and
honestly led can raise with hopefu’mess Tilden's old war cry, “Turn the rascals
out 1 "
The Democracy is ready to correct the abuses of a monopoly-breeding tariff,
to promote trade with our neighbors in Canada, to cut short the insane rivalry
with the military powers of Europe in armaments made needless by three thousand
miles of ocean, to substitute the reign of taw for the personal caprice of an arbi
trary ruler, to restore economy and integrity in government, to bring arrogant
combinations of capital under legal restraint, and to discourage the permanent ac
climatization of the American flag in any country in which the Declaration of Inde
pendence is a seditious document. To the attainment of these ends The World
pledges all its energies.
