Our columns are open far an ex planation. Tilt' Tax as legislature has passed a law making prize fighting a felony ■ that state. We guess Corbett an i Fitzsimmons will have to give it up and look elsewhere. A St. Louis landlord who kissed one of his pretty tenants has had to pay *2,500 damages and $1,200 attorney’s fee. They come high, but St, Loui landlords must liavo’em.—Waycross Herald. The Quitman Free Press lias been sold out to the editor of the Brook County News. The paper will con tinue to advoc vte Bound money, the Constitution to the contrary notwith standing. The election in the 10th last Wed nesday resulted in the defeat of Tom Watson by four hundred majority. Tlos is the third time the boys in the 10th have downed Watson. This ought to satisfy any reasonable man. Gov. Culberson, of Texas, has called i special session of the legislature for the purpose of passing a law to prohi bit prize lighting in that State. The attempt to pull oil the Corbett-Fit/.- summons light has put the governor •on his mettle. The editor of the Jasper Sews is a preacher, and vet he has seventeen children and claims only' one wife.— Gainesville Ledger.—Yes, and that is a much better showing, morally and .numerically, than some editors make who claim a dozen women for wives. —Times. Cotton lias been selling in the mark els at 8| cents this week. Last year it sold for U cents. Tnen bar silver was higher than now. Still it was •dinned into our ears daily that silver liod dragged cotton down, and cotton would never rise until silver was leg lated up.—Valdosta Times. An exchange tells of a man who slopped his paper aud wr Ac to the ed itor as follows : "I think people an ient to spend their tmiuy for papurs mi dadv didn’t and everybody sed lie was tin' iuteligentest man in the ken try and had the smattest fairnly of •wise that ever dug talers.’' The Statistician appointed by the free silver conclave at Washington re cently lias figured his crowd out in the minority at the next, National democratic convention. Out of over SOO votes he can’t count but some thing over 200 on their side, and in the count he puts Georgia and Ken tucky down in the free silver column. But neither state will vote that w ay next year. They ought now to give it up and quit. CttaHon- Greogia—Cofltee county. All per sons indebted to the estate of Mrs. M. K. Mumford, who is well known in Valdosta, in fact through out the State, preached a sermon re cently at the Dooly county camp j ground which has created a sensation, j and which deserves to attract wide- j spread attention. Rev. Mumford is an { old Georgia editor (although com- j parativoly a young man) and ho has acquired a knack of saying something when he talks. He has been in poli ■ tics enough (in his younger days) to understand something about the fel- i lows lie undertook to discuss at. the j Dooly camp ground. The calamity i howler and demagogue was treated in j p.trt as follows. j “Though bravery needs no placard 1 and honesty and virtue no signboard I y. t lie (the demagogue) never fails to) !< : the people, know by glaring sen- > tenoee and gi wing periods that lie i, j I, rave. He must show to the people tiiat he is needed and badly needed. If he is needed it must be shown tnat something is th. matter—something is wrong—tie ! very devils arc turned loose upon th, country and something must be ‘did’ and ‘did’ quickly. And that some thing is to put him forth as the migl ty mogul to pull the country out of the hog. The demagogue can lie; with all his might and at the same Lime condemn falsehood and parade him self as the great apostle of truth. “The prosperity of his own cause depending upon something heir : wrong that ought to be righted, 1 paints the darkest picture of woe. 11' uses a great black brush dipped in the blackest of ink, and when he hi smears the canvass of life not a ray of sunshine can And its way through. J f ho has his way, n order to satiate his thiist for a place in the ranks of the leaders of the people, he would make every day cloudy, damp, cold and di agreeable; he would stop the music * the rippling brooks, and put a spell cm the songs of the birds; he would put a tear in the eyes of every child, a frown on the face of every man and woman, md silence the chirp of the cricketer, the hearth; he would turn every bright picture to the wall and pluck every blooming flower from the gar den of the earth ; he would send blight and withering drouth to the fertile valleys, hills and plains and put ti e families of earth to bed gaunt and hungry, ho would strip lite of its adorn mont aud leave hideous skeletons walking where live men breathe tlv atmosphere of plenty; ho would enter the marts of trade and strike down' every sign of returning prosporit ; he would thrust in the cruel wed a b tween the rich and the poor and create utrife where once ruled peace and confidence; lie would till the world with nightmares of dread and alarm that he might spread the new? of discoutent and feed the flames o misery and wretchedness! “And when he had done his work ho would turn and complacently view it and charge it all to the enemy In pretends to be fighting and put liiu s >lf forward as the only man to bring things to right. “This is the kind of a character (’ it over drawn?) who has been tin curse of every free nation, and the lie lisli parasite on the body politic i every peaceful country. •"By him have come w ars and n. mors of w ars by him have come let - of confidence, business depression confusion, discoutent. strife and capi tal scared t< death.
