CRISP'S I,ATE STAND
Congressman Crisp’s position on the
eilver question has been in doubt for
several years but at a late date, after
% craze begins to wane—in fact, af
ter U is knocked out be takes a square
for free and unlimited coinage
m silver at 16 to 1. There is no possi
ble chance for that wild heresy to suc
ceed. In national politics it is a dead
issue—too dead to skiu. The nation
al convention of no party, unless it
be the populist party, will ever inco
porate the demand in its platform.
Nevertheless Mr. Crisp and his
backers seem to think that as a local

the people v ill natuarlly look to Tur

that doctrine. It is left then for Mr.
Crisp to join issue with them and if
lie can turn the people the other way.
We do not believe he can do it. The
tide liih set to the opposite direction.
The northern democratic press is
pretty severe on the e.\-Speaker. They
eay, “that’s what’s the matter'.vita the

• Wed m*d#y‘morning a medium
size woman, giving sor name as Mrs.
R. A. Smith,iuppefired upon the street
here and made 1m effort to secure an
auditorium in which to preach a ser
mon. She failed to secure either of
the churches and owing to the Cold
v. rather she abandoned tho idea of
preaching at night in the court house.
She held an open air meeting, how
ever, in the court house yard in the
afternoon which was attended by
about fifty people. The m;eting was
opened with a song, prayer another
nong and then came tbeserman which
consisted mostly in Bible quotations.
She allowed considerable familiarity
w ith bibical questions and her sermon
took up nearly an hour ia its delivery
Hie took up a collection and left on

years aad the spectacle she presented
was novel in these parts. Valdosta is
