NUhCKIFTMX |l A YEAH, IS AHVAXCE FUULISHED WEEKLY. tillered at the Postoffme at Douglas tta. ns second-class mail matter. FRIDAY. DEO. 6 1895. The legislative mill continues to grind. Read Cleveland’s message. It is an able and patriotic document. lu . "-i. ■" g Germany is objecting to a naval de monstration in Turkish waters. Czar Reed wields the gavel and Crisp will hold him down on the floor. J—m -BM Douglas can never have a real firsfc cla i school untill she erects a suita ble school building. Ohal; F, Crisp was unanimously nominated by the democrats of con gress tor Speaker. -L-.il • . ... The famous Bush Bill seems to be doomed to defeat at the hands of the Georgia legislature. ~ H-1 it..; If a man will read Mr. Cleveland’s message on the financial question im partially he can learn a thing or two. While we have no fight to make g> inst the siUerites still it seems to us that their arguments are of mighty Hurry stu l'our ITnele Lon Livingston is championing the cause of Venezuela ami preaching the Monroe doctrine to congress. * (' ingress met last Monday and or ganized by electing Tom Reed of Maine .Speaker of the House to suc ceed Crisp. Now let the republicans try their hand at legislating the country into perfect peace and contentedness. Many a squall is just ahead. Turkey aontinues to keep things warm in the east. The great powers of Europe are all about ready to dis pose of the “sick man,” judging from the present out look. iloh. John Fussell iutroduced a bill in the House last Friday providing tor a Board of County Commissioners for Coffee county. We think this a move in the right direction. “T2I-’'.rjE!. ...JJLt* President Cleveland's message is a powerful document, containing about 1.),000 words. On the financial ques tion it is simply superb. On all otli-' ers ft hits the nail on the head. Hon. F. G. dußignou will speak in Waycrose on the 14th inst. Every body who can possibly do so should hear this talented South Georgian. dußignon is a prominent candidate for 1 . S. Senator sad is one of the leading exponents of sound money in the state. ■■-! -1.#.'., _J. Grover Cleveland is all the demo crats will have to rely on from a na tional standpoint for the next two Jours. The republicans can pass laws inimmical to the people but Grover with his veto will keep them off the. statute books till we can get anew! deal at the ballot box. Montgomery county was shocked from center te ciWumierenee last week by the lynching of Trof. Perdue for the reputed seduction of a young lady. Later it was said that the father of the young woman had been >het, but this last report proved to be untrue. There are two sides to the question. We all deprecate lynching nud the canssea that produce them, but til! more speedy trials and punish ment are provided for the lawless their is little bepe of their fifing kvoided. -LIGHT IMMIGRATION'. During the past fiscal year the num ber of immigrants arriving in this country was only 258,536, which was less than any year’s immigration since 1879. Them are no statistics to show hovv J many people leave the country to make their homes elsewhere but it is probable that nearly as many went eut as came in last year. The popu lation of the United States gained very little from immigration during this period. There is a creat contrast between the immigration flgmes for the last fiscal year and those for the yaar 1892. During tha.fc year foreigner* came here to stay and for several years our immigration exceeded half a million. The condition of business has a de cided effect upon immigration and the recent falling off is largely due to the depreepon from which our industries recently emerg ’d. The return ;• f prosperity will un doubtedly at‘met numbers of immi grantrio oi more.—Ex.
