R itb/ishera' Notice.
Some of the patrons of the Breeze
who are behind with their accounts
are laboring under the impression
that said accounts are payable to the
old management. The undersigned
wishes to say to all that such is not
the case—that all accounts due the
Breeze are due the new management.
Respectfully,
Parker A Guekr.
The Congressional Sit nation.
The Leader of last week contains
an editorial in which it says: ‘ In
tho event that W. G. Brantly enters
the race, he will have a walk over so
far as Coffee county is concerned, and
we have the host authority for believ
ing that every county in Uie Bruns
wick judicial circuit will he in line
when the announcement is made.”
This is a sweeping statement that
our worthy contemporary has made,
and if one consider that lie has ' host
authority for believing” it, some will
besurprie'd at the situation, unless
his syllogism have been falsely con
cluded from unstable premises.
In regard to the other counties of
Uni Brunswick judicial circuit, wo
have not.the “best authority” lor re
filling the statement made by the eel
itor of the Leader—rthat is, wc have
not tjic statement of the people them
selves, the authority we consider the
best—ami, ther fore, wo cannot say
with so much certainty Unit they will
not all‘‘fall in line” with Mr. Brant
ley's candidacy. We suspect that our
authority—the press—is somewhat ns
authentic as any that is accessible
just now, and we have not been led
any manner of means to the conclu
sion of the esteemed editor aforesaid.
A lur 001ß \VU CIUINI lO
have even hotter testimony for wlnil
we shall assert in regard to the con
gressional feeling, and if we may use
the phraseology of one among the
many we have interviewed, we should
say that the sentiment in Codec conn
ty is "wc arc willing to let good
enough alone.” Mr. Turnci seems to
he plca.-ing the majority of the people
of Codec well enough, and they are
not disposed to exchange him for any
body just yet. awhile.
Now. ttK Breeze does not expect to
make a light against Mr. Brantley in
view of Lis anticipated candidacy:
there is no tight to make. Mr. Brant
ley is a gentleman of the old school
type, he is a man of the highest
character, and his fitness for any posi
tion of trust and honor cannot be de
nied. We could not say a single
thing against him even if we had any
disposition lik. do so; but for those
same reasons there can nothing be
said aga 11st Mr. Turner, mid for many
reasons in addition to these, we are
obliged by our sense of jinftiee and
honesty of purpose to support him in
the race for congress from this district.
As yet. we are of the opinion that
Mr. Braude, will not run for congress
against Mr. Turner. Ideal statesman
ship is that which prompts a man to
serve bis countiy when he is needed
and called to its service and to with
hold his services when there is good
reas m to believe that his people do
not need him and are as well repre
sented as he himself could do it.
Other tliate tli* is not true statesman
ship. and smacks of political selfish
ness. We believe that Mr. Brantley is
jiessossed of the elements of true
statesmanship. Our personal knowl
edge of him asserts a high tvpo of 1
manhood, and his public career gra-1
eiouslj substantiates that personal
knowledge. Mr. Brantley is in full
cognk mce of Mr. Turner’s accept
ance with his constituents, the people
of the state, ayd, indeed, of his general
favor throughout the entire country-
He doubtless realizes with the major
ity of the people that it would be a
loss to the district ami almost a calam
ity to the democratic party for Mr.
Turner to be dropped out of congress j
just at this time, lie knows that Mi. '
Turner’s vast knowledge and long e\
pcrience gives him advantage ovei
any other man in congress; that hoi
is the lbau of the democratic party ,
whom the republicans dear and yt t
| respect, and whom the democrats
. trust, . love and revere. Ho knows
| that the people of the district are fully
; alive to thes.''facts, and that nothing
luit a politic tl campaign of tho most
[radical methods would suffice to per
il nrt this opinion, even among tho
1 most skeptical, and to idled any
change'in the suffrage that has been
! s.o freely bestowed to keep this great
man a representative of his people.
In the event of a contest with Mr.
Turner, Mr. Brantley would have but
one pica to make to the people—the
plea of the politician : "my opponent
I holds an office and I want it.” This
j is not like Mr. Brantley and we deem
that he will prefer to bide his time
1 and make the race on a broad ground
!of patriotism. -Mr. Brantley knows
| that Mr. Turner will likely follow the
| precedent set hr Mr. Bin it, and retire
from congrets after his next term (he
will then have served ten terms, us
did Mr. Blunt); that he himself,
(Brantley) next to Mr. Turner, is by
far the most favored man in the dis
trict and will certainly follow him
upon his retirement; that by waiting
he has everything to gain, while by
making the race now lie faces a prob
able defeat that will certainly curb his
opportunities for the future.
•.Vo do not believe that Mr. Brantley
would have a ‘‘walk over” in Coffee
county, neither do we lliink that Mr.
Turin r would : it is likely that the
contest in this county would he a very
close one, -and a hectic demagogue
would chuckle in his soul at opportu
nities even as flattering as those of
fered Mr. Brantley ; but we believe
the broad minded, big hearted young
solicitor to he above all such, and we
look for him generously to offer up
his chances for a year or two longer,
and lend iiis efforts to return Mr.
Turner to Congress.
