Alas! and has it come to this?
Must we sit idly by and supinely ac
knowledge I lint labor, (Jod’s own hand
maiden, His first ac :uowlc ig ml pow
er, the stem comi ’eror of the world
has fallen helpless at I le feet * f Mam
mon and lies a fainting captive at the
gate o Tyranny tojanguish and die
in the sight of all mankind without a
protest from the powers that he? if
the press is powerful it is time it were
rousing her strength in defense of
labor, if labor have fallen by the. way
side undi i the staves of robbers and
thieves. If the press is magiinitimou
it will embrace this opportunity to
act tlm good Samaritan and mine the
bleed.ng form of labor and dress his
wounds ami set him once more on
his way with a strong heart.
We cannot agree with the Times-
Advertiser that “labor is reduced to
helplessness in this country." It
may he the "era of money power"
and mammon is obviously having its
sway over the nation and the nation's
people. We agree that if is a mighty
powic in this country, and that men
have wantoned everything, even |r.
the highest virtue In obtain the favoi
of this arrogant god of pelf. It has in
truded ils way into the nation’s coun
cils, yea it. lias own been invited
there, and now sits a dictator to tin
hand that write-the lavs, while labor
Btnnd.swi.hout, not even allowed to
tread upon the downy lawn that
sweeps around the Capitol. Lilt will
the press, the framer and master of
public opinion, assume the role of cour
tier and sycophant to sordid wealth
who reclines a bloated dullard on the
couch of ease with a eonsumn ati
presumption that labor has lost, its
poier, and that tyrannical wealth
will forever hold an im \. ruble grasp
on the icejitre ol individual and na
tiona! power.? Tbit is a mistake that
money p,is making, and if the
press forget the history of nations,
thinking that the "times” and "pecul
iar circumstances” will exempt us
from the laws of national suicide, it,
too. will recover from an alalurate
stupor to learn that labor still 100
power, and that it is able to reaffirm
the Latin maxim, “Labor omnia
vim it. '
Labor' is not reduce 1 to Uffplcss
ness in tliis country, neither will it
ever be. “Law in its last analysis is
force" and no man is too stupid to
know that force is not in the wealth
that belongs only to a small percent
of the population, that the real power
of a nation does not lie in the resour
ces of a few rich men of even our own
America. No, it slumbers in the
strong, sturdy arm of labor, and
although it may be dorment for a long
season and men may foget where the
real strength of the nation lies, yet
there me a few who never forget and
we would do well to hearken unto the
voices that warn us.
Labor is patient, long suffering,
kind and will not raise its mighty
hand to strike where there is an op
portunity- or the least disposition to a
liberal adjustments of is rights , hut
after long seasons of waiting for jus
tiee, ami there remains no hope for
an honest claim then we may look
for display of labor's force that will
wreck our little theories of jurispru
dence and equity end national stabil
ity of a republican form of government.
Labor is nor ieduced to helplessness
in this country, it is patiently waiting
for justice, it is sull\ ring for what is
right, it is aintplv withholding a
mighty force with which it could
w reck this country w ith a single Mow
Labor is too patriotic to strike hut
p .tience c ases to be a virtue after a
awhile.
