JJGLAS BREEZE. ■\(> \v. (iItKKR, Editor. ■ s. sAl'l’, Editor TiItKEH A SAIT Publisher*. Official Organ Coffee County Advertising Hate* Reasonable. BUBCKIPTIOH |t a YF.AR, IV APVANCK PUdLISHED weekly. Entered at the Postofficc at Douglas Ga. as second-class mail matter. FRIDAY.IFEBRUARY 28.1896. Withdrawal. With this issue of the Breeze Mr. M. J. Parker withdraws his member shiD from the .Barker and Greer and will no longer be connect ed with th 3 paper. Mr. Barker's con nection with us has been pleasant, his stay in Douglas ha# won him many frionds, and lie himself has been greatly please t with DouglaH and her people. His with drawal is solely on account of a more lucrative position that has been offer ed him by his brother in Ardmore In dian Territory. We rcgrct;to lose him but rejoice in his good fortune. Mr. Greer will, assume editorial control of the Breeze and will have Mr. E. 8. Sapp associated with him. Mr. Sapp will also have control of the mechanical department of the paper. Uis work as a job printer is elegant and tasty and his attainments in this respect mark him as man of tact and talent. The publishers assume all obliga tions of the late firm, and will give the people an honest paper. No effort will be spared to make the Breeze what the people of Cofteo county want and we shall cndeaver to improve ovcry issue.,, Our School. It is with pride that wo herald the erection of an elegant brick school building in Douglas; for it is the thing above all others that we mostly need ; and, too, it prefigures an institution which is to be an honor to our entire county as well as to Douglas. In the establishment of a High School at this place it,is the purpose of our citizens to make Douglas the educational cen tre of the county. With this objeel in view it must not be supposed that there is nny selfishness attached to the enterprise. On the other hand, it is the intent of our people to create a school at the county site where pupils when they have finished their course at other schools in the county may preparo for college or complete a practical course of stud} that will fit them for the ordinary du ties ot life. As it is, there is not s Bchool in the county where pupils may preparo fully to enter the Freshman or Sophomoro class at any first rate college. There are teachers, to be sure, who are capable of doing this work, but the arduous labors put upon them by the great number of pupils in their charge precludes the classical training that is necessary. The people of tho county should be ' ns much interested in this High Bcliool as tho citizens themselves. It will be for tho people of the county as well as for tho citizens of Douglas. They shuld not hesitate to put their money into a building that is to har bor their children from ignorance any more than the people who live under the very shadow of its towers. And it must not be forgotten that the peo ple eventually will have this building to pay for. It must not be supposed or expected that Messrs. Petersou and Buck are to donate this building to the town or the county. True, they have given vary largely to the fund, even more largely than any other two men. Mr. Peterson graciously gives a large tract Of his most valuable laud to build on, outside of his handsome money donation. For the balance required after the donations are in they have generously offered to assume till the town council or citizens shall be able to liquidate the debt. They' have simply reached down in our ex tremity and made it their glorious opportunity- to do a handsome thing. The people should appreciate it and do all iu their power to obviate as much of the account in the beginning as it is possible. Now a few words to the citizens of Douglas: there is a duty before ev ery man Who lives in proximity to the town. When the committee, tvho have beea appointed to solicit fuuds, call on him or her (for the ladies are net ex cluded from this grand work) that per son should loose his purse Strings respond honestly to the appeal. We not preUnd to say what any one should give, but every one knows for himself, and an honest donation will bo all that any one can expect. Not a cent of this money will be lost to you. It is like bread cast upon the waters: for ship loads of bread will be returned to you, and a good conscience will repay you a thousand fold. A graded High School in' Douglas will double the population in a year, in crease business a huudred per cent and advance the price of real estate quite that amount. Let everybody chime in with this movement, If you cannot pay anything toward it say something toward it. Encourage every whisper in its favor, and because you do pay a little or even much, do not think on that ac count you ought to run it according to your own notion? There can be but a few managers and they will prob ably do the best for all concerned while your way might not suit any body but yeursell. We have in anticipation a great institution : let every man be a unit in its favor and lift his share to its completion and we shall be happy with ourselves when it is done. Tho Brunswick Call’s editorial on Mr. Turner’s speech was upright and manly and will lend a prominent pres tige to its columns. The grand jury of Bibb wants the county commissioners to guild the clock steeple on the court house with their own hands. Evidently, the grand jury wishes to rid the county of its commissioners. Bill Nye the great American humor ist is dead. He was stricken with paralysis some weeks ago and his spiiit fled last Saturday. Many a smile has vanished out of the world and many a weary heart will miss bis sunlit soul. Miss Clara Barton has been granted entrance into Turkey and, now she will begin to distribute relief to the persecuted Amenians. Funds sent to the lied Cross Society at Washington D. C. will ho forwarded at once to her for distribution. E. V. Debs lectured in Brunswick and Waycross nd completely captured lia audience at both places. Indeed lie has Deen well received every where lie has spoken in Georgia. Maybe be isn’t au bad as Mr. Pullman's papers would have us believe. Rev. Warren A. Candler. D. I), president of Emory College, Oxford Ga. is being prominently mentioned as a suitable man to succeed Dr. Hay good on board of Bishops of the South ern Methodist church. No man in the South is better qualified for the posi tion. The engineer who wrote for the Way cross Herald, made somo fine points ; but they came too lute. He should have exercised his talents beforo many of his brothers lost positions, and pos sibly it would have done more good. Certainly it can do little now, and he appears to be writing merely to boot-lick the officials of the Plant System. It will be difficult for him to make the public believe that he has uot played the Judas. In a strong editorial the llaxley Ban’ ner says we are responsible that the large per cent of children iu Georgia are not in the schools, because we do uot agitate sufficiently the importance of education. The Banner is right. Every body knows how valuable it is to any question hr agitate it. We ven ture to suggest that if the papers would write as much about education as they do about prize fights, this per cent would be lessened a hundred fold iu a year, There is a good deal of talk over the district concerning the race of Hou W. G. Brantley for Congress,. We think that Mr. Brantley is too wise, however, to ihake the race against Mr. Turner. He is a good solid man, but lie can't beat Henry G. Turner and there is no use for him to try. And by offering himself as a candidate a gainst Mr. Turner, he Would undoubt edly lose a large amount of his strength aud influence. Wail awhile. Mr. Brant ley, your time will come next. Telfair EuL Life is a festival only to the wise. Seeu from the nook and chimney-side of"pf|udence, wears a ragged and danf> eroiu front.—Emerson.
