Memorial day never had a more general, more popular or more enthus iastic celebration in Georgia than that which it received Monday. Through mistake in our last issue that anticipated wedding at Philip’s Mill crept into the Douglas locals. No, no, no, no! no such good luck fer Douglas. Onpt. The last meeting of the Clio club was at the residence of I)r. and Mrs. Tern-1! and as is usual with that young couple, they treated the members with splendid cordiality. Refreshments were served after the manner of Mrs Terrell’s taste which is sufficeat attest of thitr excellence. Miss Maud Briggs was elected President for the ensuing term and Miss Alice Phillips, vice. The next meeting will be at the latter’s home and the program is a good one. J‘uulk's Fane nil. The funeral of Lige Paulk at Anti och church mis probably the most largely attended ever known in the country. There was not a more pop ular man in Coffee than J.ige Paulk, and people from all over the country went to participate in the last sad rights oyer this great hearted man. The services were conducted under tbs auspices of the Masonic order and the exercises at the grave were very impressive. Rev. Mr. Littlcj bn preached an eloquent sermon and it truths sank dec-p into the hearts of live people. Lige Paulk was young but b- served his day and generation an 1 liuislied his work with luioor. The repair shops will soon be enlarged and many other lines are on the increase. 1. L. Cockrell is up to date in the drug business and gives U3 as good service as the cities get. Mr. Adam Tuttle of .South C.iro’p na is visiting his brother at this place and expresses himself as well pleased with Coffee and threatens to become a citizen. We are delighted with S. D. Philips as infant class teacher in the Sunday school. He lias an important work and is freely discharging his duty. Our girls arc up to date on every thing but catching fish. Wo attri bute their failure to the fact that they do not take along the boys to bait their hooks. Bob. An old Lund Murk (lour. On last Friday night at bis home four miles south of Douglas, (he ven erable Jolm Carver passed away. He had been ailing with dropsy for several months and bis death was not unexpected, ho being seventy six years of age and consequently an easy prey to his malady. Mr. Carver was one of the staun chest citizens of Coffee, a man of rare honesty and earnest piety. A private iti tho army of life, he sought rather to perform th.it function well than to make greater pretension at risk of failure. He was a good man, a dea con in the Missionary Baptist church, mid his life was eminently consistent iv i'h the precepts of Ilia’ faith. He wa fairly well to do in (he matter of thk wor’d’s goods and hud one of the best plantations in (he county. lie was buried near his home Saturday. Rev. !!. T. Flluidge. Tho people of Coffee county will regret to’cam of the death of Henry T. Peo ple almost worshiped tho man, and truly they loved a great character. When in college Tom Ethridge was considered by all to be the finest char acter in s jhc.nl. The boys and professors alikcloved him and his influence at Emory College is yet a,powerful agency for good. Iff the battleo 1 Hie lie was no less a success. Men only had to look in bis broad manly face to give him their support. There was no guile, nr. treachery, no hidden secrets there. 11 is big heart fairly shown out through bis e untenance and men followed after his shining light. AVhilo in tin far West his labors we e felt even to Georgia; for young men listfuid to his counsel and came all the way to Em ory College, that grand old institution of learning, where they might receive a Christian education.
