The cities are crowded, the towns are crowded, but there is plenty of room in the country. Yes, there is plenty of room in the country, and the towns and cities are running over, and still the country peaceful ages. ■ rill, is the spirit of the closing ccn ■ury. The world is on a rapid move and men despise to he behind the times and the country is so prosy and far in arrears of what seems up-to-date living. Men in town wear good clothes men in town hold up their shoul ders and walk rapidly and gracefully along the • i reels, men in town read the daily newspapers and keep abreast of the public questions; they have the advantage of the public libraries, they send to school nine months in the year, attend the theatres nightly, con verse glibly, transact business rapidly, have tint luxuries of the niaiket, get rich quickly, live fast, fail in business, get rich again, die early, have a big fu neral—and all this is attractive. True it is unnatural, hut men like it and that is why they leave the country and come to town. In the pristine* days of southern chivalry the country folk were the flower and strength of the south. TheyJamnod extensively, lived in fine old lfl^Bkjj^dr.‘<i l iiH ami duugh in the politics of high style and were respect, above the traders and mart hustlers of the cities. But the old south has giv en place to anew regime in which country life takes a second place, and people do not like tv hold the second place in the social and industrial sys tem of a nation, and hence the coun try people come to town. It will not always be thus. States manship is trying to solve this vital question and institute sot no means by which this influx to the cities may be cheeked. It is supping the vitals of a nation to adorn and glorify its external prominence. Statesmen have no need to worry over this problem : it Will cettlo itself, .lust as .the jiegro problem admits of no patent solution, but is gradually and naturally set tling itself, so will this super-energetic stride of the pendulum swing hack in to its natural heat. and the country! again will receive its due considera tion and her holds, her flower yards, j her libraries, her homes, her pristine i glory will la* renewed and the nut on | will feel a revival of naturalness that will allay the restless spirit which ren dors prosperity so uncertain. Men will discover that the glare and glitter of the cities, tile energy, the rapid progiv '|ho hurry, the quick step, the glib tongue—all, all that is, : s ohly a dress parade, a show, is superb-j rial and every iota of it strained. 1 Men are taxed to their very utmost j and many far above their capacity, to I keep up appearance**, tor these can not he ignored. All this is unnatur aland men will not continue always to live in an unnatural element when there is an escape. The country is abundantly open and five. 1 1 affords a gracious opportunity for a good liv ing. independence, and freedo m The overtaxed of the cities will grow weary of their.slavery, they will feek the rurals as a refuge. They will o rect comfortable homes, till them with attractions, establish better school and church privileges and pleat! for better roads.
