Democratic Hnccess.
The earnestness, activity and har
mony thatcharacteii/.ed the meeting
of the democratic executive commit
tee in its deliberations of Monday af
ford an ample basis for confidence in
ill© success of the democratic party
iu Coffee county at the October elec
tions. The variance of tl e party of
two years ago was (juite a lessons to
its leaders and the strength manifes
ted by the populist in the disorgan
ization and weakness of the democrats
was sufficient to ‘each the latter a les
son in unity and harmony, and the
spirit of the executive committee
Monday was quite assuring of peaceful
and solid phalanxes this year.
So far as there being a majority
and a big majority ef I lie democratic
voters of the county, there can he no
doubt in the minds of those who know
the situation. The democratic party
always has been and will continue to
he predomiiftmt in Coffee county and
any slight advantage that may have
been or will be gained by the populist
or any other party is merely tempo
rary and will he lost as soon as its
fallacies are exposed. Indeed, the
populist party has already lost many
of its boat supporters since the last
election, and it is a daily occurrence
to hear men say they will no longer
be led by the vagaries and untenable
positions held by its advocates.
In its incipicncy, the populist par
ty duped our people by that colossal
farce, the “sub-treasury" scheme. Its
absurdities were exposed, good sense
prevailed and the populists themselves
abandoned the idea, Then “bobed
up” that other preposterous monstros
ity, the "government ownership of
railroad and telegraph linos". For
a while (he idea caught like wild fire
and men fairly lost their equilibrium
in the anticipation of one cent a mile
railroad fare, hut lo! it was doomed;
for good sense again came t > the res
cue and, now. how quiet are the pop
ulists about railroads an 1 telegraphs !
Hut the populists party could not live
without a boom, and so the energetic
Thomas ami others started up the old
dodge of money agitation, and now
the populists and thousands of demo
crats are tearing their hair and yelling
Ihoir lungs out for free silver at ate
diculous ratio, which isauothcr scheme
much in koaping with the sub-treas
ury and government ownership of
rail roods, and which will live only in
the disappointment and sore throats
and haldheadsof its advocates.
It is strange now some people will
consent to be “stuffed" with one folly
right after another and that by the
same men and agencies. A burnt
child will be careful of tiro. You can
not fool a dog with the same trick
twice, and the same man or men
should not be able to enact a second
and third and fourth fraud on an en
telligeut public but ; here is the p >p
ulist party leading our people astray
after fooling them with one scheme
right after another.
Well there is a healthful sign in
Coffee county : many of our people arc
losing confidence in the populist par
ty. and day by day they are falling
back into the ranks of democracy
which lias held out to its advocates
no unreasonable schemes, however
much it may have been handicapped
and have been unable to prosecute
the policies protruded in its platforms.
The prospect for a democratic vict
ory was never brighter in the history
of the county and this should encour
age every true democrat to put his ef
forts in the campaign and make every
honest endeavor to restore complete
democratic rule iu our county affairs.
Populistic policies, if not dangerous,
are absolutely worthies-, as have been
proved by the action of the populists
themselves in regard t those theories
they once held out to our people
good, but which they now abandon
and even repudiate. This good pros
pect should not make us too sanguine,
however; for victory must be won by
eternal vigilance and energy. Let
every democrat see that
every other Democrat reg-
isters before it is too late and votes
both in the primary and in the gen
eral election, and we shall have very
littlo populism to combat in tbe fu
ture.
The President lias vetoed the river
and harbor bill which appropriated
$80,000,000 of government funds.
The Arnerieus Herald suggests that
a law, not against murder, hut against
insanity is the need of the age.
Old man Taylor I)elk has been sen
tenced to be banged June 1-t witb bi
son Torn, for tbe same murder, tbe
killing of (sheriff Guinn of Pike county.
Pay no attention to the gossipper
or scandal-monger. Remember the
commonest swine can root up tbe
fairest flo.ver that ever grew.—Black
ly Obs rver.
Tbe crying fault of our generation
is its lack of gentleness. Our age is
harsh when it judge., brutal when it
blames, and savage in its severity—

The ideal woman must he the in
carnation of sweetness and beauty.
She must he a perfect homemaker,
.■she must stand at the head of her

by the Prohibitionists in convention

The pessimist is a freak. Pessim
ism is tbe child of a day or a mood.
Optimism is the great under current
of human life. Pessimism is abnormal.
It is a disease of the mind.—Overton.
If you arc a sound money or n free
silver advocate, it will be your duty
to acquiesce in the will
of the majority ; for “majority rule" is
a fundamental principle of democ
racy.
Register. Do not suppose that you
can vote because you registered last
year: that \vill not do. You must
register this year if you would vote
this year. Dont forget it.
“Let every tub stand on its own bot
tom” is a maxim of sterling worth,
but the free and unlimited coinage of
silver would affix an unstable bottom
to the monetary tab of our nation.
We do not know whether it would
topple over or sqush through.
There is a vast difference between
a policy and principle. \Ve regard
the money quost'on as nothing more
than a policy, and holding it as such,
its settlement adversely to our opin
ion would not in the least effect oui
democracy.
Hero on this troubled globe it is de
creed that the gloom of night shall
cover us as often as the hopeful day;
but yonder on the everlasting heights
of glory the sun never sets, and the
silver peaks stand always bathed in
the ineffable sheen from the throne
of love.—Crane.
The two words “masses” a id “class
es” invite prejudicial comparison to
all relations of brotherhood, friend
ship aud health. Men arc men: we
might as well blot the name of God
from the world and hatter down his
| throne as to insinuate there can be
j any other condition that the univer
