Brunswick, Ga., June 17.
Before we reached Brunswick to
night it was learned that Mr. Turner
had declined to run for congress and
(hat hjs letter to that effect had been
published in the B-unswick evening
papers.
Our delegation with others on the
train at once centered on Mr. Brantley

JIEKE IS THE I.ETTEB.
Quitman, Ga., June 15 1890,
Hon.C. R, Pendleton,Chairman Dem
ocratic Executive Committee of the
Eleventh Congressional District,
Valdosta Ga:
My Dear Sir: In view of the near
approach of the convention to assem
ble at St. Simon on the 18 iost., 1 beg
through you to notify the delegates
to that body and all my constituents
of my desire to be rcl used from re
sponsibility as their representative at
the expiration of my present term.
Although there is no doubt as to what
would ho the action of the convention
of my district, it is now generally
conceded that the majority of our na
tional convention vvi 1 favor a financial
policy which 1 have most earnestly de
preciated and actively opposed on all
occasions.
Frankly, I cannot defend thejprcposed
change in our national platform nor
support a revolution in our monetary
system, the inauguration of which un
der existing conditions would, in my
opinion greatly aggravate the fiscal
disorders from which wo now suffer.
On the other hand, after the many
honors f have had from my party, 1
do not wish to occupy a position of
antagonism to its declared will on so
vital a question. To avoid personal
stultification on the one side, and op
position to a majority of my party as
ociates on the other, 1 hive no course
left me but to retire.
1 turn over to my successor, constit
uents whose unselfish support is worth
more than a dukedom. Their confi
dence during this phenomenal year,
as shown in the recent primaries,
while almost all other districts in our
section exultingly pursuing a
different view, and while I was com
pelled by sickness to ho silent, is the
highest honor with which they could
crown the close of public career.
To my old friends in the Second
district who long supported all my as
pirations and to the good friends in
the Eleventh district who gave me so
generous a welcome, and such implic
it trust, 1 shall always render Hie sin
cere homage of a grateful heart.
And among these latter, it is not
invidious to specially "mention you,
Mr. Chairman and others of the Dem
ocratic press of the district. Long
may you survive to aid in preserving
and maintaining the high character
of the democrats of Wiregrass Geor
gia. 1 am, sir, as ever. Very truly
yours, Henry G. Turner.
