. VOL. VII. LOCAL NEWS Mr. Geo. W. Deen of Waycross was in the city yesterday. Drs. John and Frank Hall were in town two days this week. ■ Hotel de Tanner has eleven git ests exclusive of the hounds. Only a few days in which to register before the primary. Don’t neglect it Register, so that if you want to vote you may do so at the coming election. Our columns were too crowded to publish the law on primaries this week. Sheriff Smith has been bringing in the miscreants with a full hand this week. A new star, the 45tli representing Utah, was placed on the Flag of the Union July 4. We went to the Tifton fair, but the rain fell and beat upon that town so that we took no pleasure in it, A number of Bloods went to Down ing last night to a social tendered by the youuy ladies of that place. Miss Carrie Faison who has been visiting Mrs. Mac Brown, returned to her home at Waycross Wednesday. Judge Dart is dallying with the verdant locks of the mermaids and reveling in the briny domain of Nep tune this week. From the number now occupying 11 the jail, people must be selling ‘‘cider” elsewhere in the couuty. The grand jury will take notice. Miss Nannie Buck and Miss Harri son of Bridgetown, who have been the guests of Mrs. T. J. Harrison for several days returned home Wedncs . day. Six negto women were brought to Douglas Monday night and lodged at the Tanner house. They were from Nichols and had been inliarmoniously disposed. Mr. Levi Osteen was in town a few minutes Wednesday afternoon. He came expecting to be initiated in the K, of F. and discovered that he was just a week ahead. Albert Sweat, the talented young editor, who lias been with the Bree/.e during the illness of its associate edi tor, returned to his home in Black shear Saturday. Mrs/Eiislia Lott, Sr. one of the old time mothers of Coffee, who of recent years has been living in Brunswick with her son, Joel, is visiting her chil dren and friends in Collje. We call attention in this issue to Mr. J. 11. Anderson’s announcement for Sheriff. Mr. Anderson has been a bailiff in the Tanner district for some time. He runs squarely on the dem ocratic ticket. Our spaces gave out just as the Be arson dots came in, and as a result we are compelled to leave them out cf this issue. New material will arrive in a few days to equip us folly. Be patient with us. The Waycross Steam Laundry pays the express both ways on work sent tnciii. Messrs. Jesse and Seward Lott and B, Peterson left for an extended trip through the East yesterday. They will visit Baltimore, Washington, Phil adelphia, New York, Saratoga, the cities along the Iludsoh. the Catskill Mountains and Niagara Falls. Send your washing to the Wayeros.-.Stearn Laundry. They guarantee ail their work. Dr R. H. Doan, the occuli3t and opti cian is in the city looking into the eves of the pub 1 it. He requests us to S ay that lie will b:> here for several days and will be glad to examine and treat eyes and to fit glasses on the peo ple. Send vour linen to the Waycross steam laundry. It will cost yon but little, an i in akes you look noatcT. Miss Mattie Clemcflts who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Terrell, for the past two weeks returned to her home at Alamo Monday. Mrs. Tc-rreli and little son accompanied her. she will be gone about six weeks, and wiii visit the coast before she returns. What will the populists do now, since we the democrats, have both their platform and man? Oil, come on, Pops, and join us. You arc noth ing but democrats anyhow. We shall find out now whether the pops are more anxious for free silver or for office. Democracy is their only hope for free silver, while populism extends a bare possibility for office.. Which will they take? Any boy or girl can gfet forty cash subscribers to the Breeze in a month with but little effort, which will enti tle him or her to the forty dollar schol arship in Masseys great business col leges ’at Columbus, Jacksonville or Montgomery. Dr. and Mrs. Terrell entertained a party of young people at their resi dence Saturday afternoon in honor of Miss Mattie Clements, Mrs. Terrell’s sister who has been visiting her. Re freshments were served and the com pany were delightfully entertained till dusk. On next Wednesday evening at the Masonic Hall, the Baxley lodge of the Knights of Pithias will organize an order at this place. For some time Mr. J. T. Relihan, a leading merchant of Douglas, formerly of Baxley and a member of the lodge there, lias been actively engaged in working up an in terest, and his labors have been liber ally rewarded. The lodge will begin with over twenty members with a fair prospect of a large increase. Visiting Knights from neighboring towns will lie present and a pleasant occasion is anticipated. THJ-J 001.0 it LINE. Pinebloom, Ga. July 14, ’!)(>. Editor Breeze, I do not for one moment question the honesty of purpose on the part of the willacooehee Courier in its com ments on the action of the county exec utive committee, in drawing the coUr line as to the management of our pri mary ; but it seems that our costly periencein the past is a sufficient les son for all true democrats no longer to waste precious oil on the troubled wa ters of our antagonists, I most heart ily agree with the Courier as to our candidates all being good men, but are we not to consider the individual strength and capabilities of these men, and select tho-e who will guarantee the greatest satisfaction to the party? If we allow negroes under populist or republican influence to vote in our primary, they would see that our weak est and most incompetent candidates were nominated, then vole solidly a gainst them in October. Ithasbeen the ‘ milk and water” policy of the democratic party and the democratic press that has brought true democracy to almost irretrievable, ru in. This policy 1 have condemned from the very incipiency of populism, and had this line been rigidly drawn four years ago and held squarely up to the mark of pure democracy, to-day the result would have been quite dif ferent. 1 liousards of good men would have come to a dead halt in approach ing a line of this character and given careful thought to the situation before attempting to cross a gulf of such vast and heretical- proportions, and such careful thought would no doubt have dispelled their temporary delusions, and the would-be victims of false prophets rescued by a rational appeal to reason and justice. J. Burns. Minstrels Coming. The Willacooehee minstrels will perform at Douglas in the near future and we can assure the people of our sister • town that they can look out .for two full hours of innocent, solid fun. white the faces of the perform ers will be smutty, yet, there will not be a smutty expression used during rhe performance. The program will consist of vocal an instrumental music, original gags, old plantation scenes, dancing, funny sketches, etc.—Courier. We are authorized to announce that the willaeooohee minstrels will play in Douglas at the court house on Fri day luly 24. If you want to forget haul times and pobics don't forget the date. Come and laugh yourself fat. The price will be small. DOUGLAS, GA. COFFEE COUNTY. FRIDAY JULY 17 1898. Unto All Men and All Things Give Due Consideration. 21. E. La'lß nnce.
