VOL. VII. LOCAL NEWS Fi elder pulling time. The candidates .all look nervous to day. Miss Amanda Vickers spent Sun day in town. Albert Sweat came up from Black sliear Wednesday. Mrs. Iniinger furnishes us the first open cotton bole. Mr. Jno. H. Peterson of Pick re n was in Douglas Tuesday. Several Douglas people attended meeting at Brushy Creek Sunday. Mr. It. R. Perkins and Mrs. Jesse Lott of Broxton were in town Monday. Misses E. X. and Laura Douglas \ isited .relatives at Pearson Sunday The thermometer registered over _a hundred more than one time this week. Mr. Clough of Manor was in Doug las prospecting Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs. C. A. Ward spent Saturday and Sunday with her parents near Hazlehurst. Miss Xellie Ward is home again af ter spending several months with friends in Colquitt county, Miss Kate Kirkland, the belle of Kirkland Ga., is visiting her sister Mrs. B. Peterson this week. On Monday the populists will hold a mass meeting in the court house for the purpose of nominating county oflicers. To-morrow will settle, the question. Some will laugh, ethers will lament, but if you are beaten boys take it easy. Remember all cant be elected at once. Mr. Elias Hinson is tire latest man on the ticket for Tax Collector. Mr I-linson is an honest, honorable gen tieman and if elected will no doubt make a good officer. ihe Willacoochee Minstrel- played to a crowded house last Friday night, and the proverbial dullness of sum mer was broken by the excessive cackle of the audience. Examination for teachers was held here last Saturday under the super vision of Commissioner Jeff Kirkland. There were thirty live applicants for licensee, twenty six white and nine colored. Mr. M, Mets is in the race for coun ty treasurer. Mr. Mets is a life long citizen of the county has been in bad health for a long time, hast? large fam ily and on these grounds he begs the support of the peopie. Mr. \V. P. Ward was the first per son to bring Tom Davis a solution of his apple orchard p'oblem and will receive in consideration thereof the Breeze for one year at Tom’s ex pense. A. number of others have solved the problem and brought it in. .Messrs. Jesse and Seward Eott and Bcnajah Peterson returned from the North yesterday, Seward returning via Hazleliurst. Outside of the excessive heat and a little seasickness they hod a good time. They say the heat and politics are hotter up there than in Hie South, and that free silver is winning favor rapidly, Of course, the vote of to-morrow will not show the strength of the de mocracy of the county. Many dem ocrats, on account of their personal regard for some of the candidates op posing one another, will not express themselves in the primary, and many more are willing to vote for the. democratic candidates in October, whoever they may be. It is now almost a certainty that ?.ir. Dan Lott Sr. will enter the race f or Representative on the populist ticket against his brother. The old man has had a number of opportuni ties since the war to run for Represen tative when lie would have been eeii tain of election ; but he has per, is ten t )v refused every proffer of the place lip to this time, and, now, he comes out in plain opposition to his brother and in the very face of defeat. It is a peculiar incident and smacks of jeal ousy. He will be beaten by 300 majority. THE oOOGtAS nun, THE CANDIDATES. Peterson and Master Oliver Peterson were welcome visitors during the past week. Mr. Judd Kirkland Inis the con tract, to build a fine residence for Mi. M. Kirkland at Red Bluff Creek. The girl that is missed most when absent from home is Miss Kate Kirk land, an attractive brunette who is vis iting your lovely city just at this time. Mr. Bennie Gray of Pine Bloom and Messrs Chas. Mallelto and Mr. Hen derson of Leighton were prominent visitors in our midst last week. Mrs IV. H. Love lias fifty acres of the finest corn in the county. Mr. Jno. L. Kirkland’s new resi dence is nearing completion and will he the handsomest in town when com pleted. Rev. Mr. Turner of the Episcopal chinch is expected to hold services at Leighton Parish the fifth Sunday in August. Sunday school ea< h Sunday at five o’clock P. M. at Leighton, everybody invited to participate. Judge J. L. Sweat has appointed Mr. Josepii E. Brown Love a commercial notary public for this county, at Kirk land. Mrs. Allen Summerlin of Pearson was visiting relatives here this week. Mrs. John Fussel has almost entire ly recovered from her recent attack of Paralysis to the delight cf Her numer ous friends. Miss Lizzie Y\ ilborti a popular and pretty young lady of Wcstonia has been the guest of Miss Pate Kirkland during the past week. Everybody that has seen it says Lock Kirkland’s crop of cotton is the finest in the county. Dr. Terrell writes us to announce that on aecount of the serious illness of a near relative of his, he will not he able t > return to Douglas before Monday. The Pearson School. The Pearson High School under the priucipalship of Prof. W. L. Du- Vall B. S. B. & C. S. will open its doors to tlie public on Aug* 17. The Pearson school is one of the best in tlie county, and Prof. Du Vail has done much in the past year to raise its discipline and curriculum to a high standard. The school in the coming year will be judicially graded and the work done will be especially adapted to the students of this section. Prof DuVail is a young man of 30 years with a splendid education whose morals are of the highest order. He is a native of Ohio, is a graduate of the Ohio School and.the Northwestern Business College, and has been a teacher since his gradua tion 12 years ago. Prof. DuYal! says that pupils sent to board at Pearson will be carefully looked after. The place is healthful and good heard may’be bad for 6, 8 and 10 dollars a month. DOUGLAS, GA. COFFEE COUNTY. Pearson, On last Saturday at her home some miles south of here, Miss Lilia Barber was united in marriage to Air. Tom Smith of this place. The couple came to Pearson Saturday and ere roundly serenaded in the usual manner Satur day night. Mrs. W. E Eutch and her children with her mother-in-law, Mrs. Eutch of Brunswick, are visiting the Greer’s prior to their leaving for their new home in Cleveland, Ohio, next month. Mr. W. E. Eutch, the newly elected president of the B. of L. E, insurance department paid a flying visit to Mr. and Airs. N. C. Greer on his way to Cleveland. Air. O. V. McDonald of Pendergrass, Ga. is in ‘he city on a visit to his son Col. W. W. McDonald. Mr, Dred Nevvbern is one of the cleverest of men. UUTH SAPI* DKAI). At the home of her son, Air. Henry Sapp, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Mrs. Ruth Sapp a very aged lady passed away. She was about ninety years old and had been ailiug with dropsy for some time, and her death has been expect ed for several weeks. Airs. Sapp was the mother of Mes°rs. John, Henry, Joe, Enoch and Levy Sapp of this county. She was buried at the Cato grave yard, Wednesday. Miss Ethel Frink of Lake City, Fla., is visiting her sister, Mrs. J. W. Quin cey.
