Like sea foam the moon’s silvor sifted
Through the dark swaying houghs of the
pine,
And fragrant with night’s perfumo drifted.
Wind blown, through her tresses divino
As she stood, with dark lashes uplifted
And eyes Hashing lovo into mine.
’Twas but the swoct story of ages
We told to each other that night,
But, ah, how its memory assuages
The subsequent sorrow and blight
That swept from life’s sanctified pages
Love’s promise of beauty and light!
And when the moon's banner is streaming,
Bright sown with the beads of tho rain,
And the' star lamps of memory are gleaming
Through those uplifted lashes again,
1 rest in tho land of my droaming
From life’s bitter pathway of pain.
I see in sleep’s sweet recollection,
Though fading as soon from my sight,
Those features in spirit reflection
Shining out of their nimbus of light,
And they speak tho samo deathless affection
That they spolco to my spirit that night.

Told of Daniel Webster.
It is never safe to say things to
the ragged, unkempt men one sees
and moots a-fishing by some mud
pond or stream. This truth is illus
trated by the case of Daniol Webster.
Wobstor was a fisherman and had
sloops and a srunok in which he used
to enjoy the pastime. He was not
overfastidious in his fisherman’s
dress. If ho toro his clothos, he did
not take tho trouble to have tho rent,
sowod up, and when enjoying his
sport ho was a tolerably rough look
ing customer, according to a Roches
ter papor whose reporter interview
ed Mrs. Dawes, a resident of Marsh
field in Webster’s days.
Webster and Mrs. Dawes’ uncle
woro fishing one day from tho shore
of the bay, when a stylish young
fellow, a visitor at Marshfield, tum
bled head over heels into the marsh.
The tumbler yelled at Webster, ask
ing how much ho would take to haul
him out and carry him over tho
mud.
“A quarter!” answered Webster,
and tho deed was done. Whereupon
tho quarter was turned over, and
Webster had started away when
the mud stumbler asked:
“To whom am I indebtod?”
“Only Daniol Webster.”
The man said aftorward that ho
apologized for his superciliousness
and did not reckon othor people up
acoording to tho number of tears
and patches and mud on their
clothes.
