Democratic Call.
The Democratic Executive Commit
tee of Coffee county are hereby called
to meet on the first Monday in March
1897, at Douglas, for the purpose of
t !< cting anew member for the Doug
las district, and a {secretary for said
Committee in place of J. VV. Quinccy.
This Feb. 16. 181)7. B. Pktix.-ox,
Chairman.
WE MEAN BUSINESS.
As there hag been so much said
about robbing the poor tax-burdened
proplo because the County Commis
sioners prefer to give the Breeze their
printing and pay for the same as the
law directs, and because of which the
Douglas Deader lias attacked the
County Commissioners and imputed
dishonesty to them,-now, in view of,
ail this the Breeze makes the flowing
propositon to Sheriff " Tanner, Ordi
x
navy Young, < jfltffd Clerk Gaskin : we
agrttiHCo publish all the legal adver
t-i ling emanating from your offices
during the present year, freo of charge
and place ourselves under a bond of
SIOOO for the faithful performance of
this obligation. The fees paid for
advertising emanating from the Ordi
nary’s office conies from the pockets of
the widows and orphans of our county
aud our belief in Judge Young’s hon
esty inclines us to think he cannot
but accept this offer. Anyway, it is
now left for him to say whether or
not the widows and orphans of our
county shall be relieved of this burden.
Every citizen of Coffee county will
agree with us that the otlier officers
should ump at the chance of relieving
them of paying the foes for advertis
ing emanating from theiroffu'es. Now
let us here from you, gentlemen ; the
whole county, —every tax payer in
it—will await your decision with much
interest.
PUT A TAX ON EGYPTIAN C<>TT( >N.
The question of levying a tariff tax
on Egyptian cotton is being discussed
pro and eon. Congressman Brantley,
of this district, has taken the right
)Kition in the matter ns we view it.
In an interview lßst week lie said :
“As to whether or not a duty laid
upon Egyptian cotton will enhance
the price of cotton ldo not know. 1
have heard it suggested from sources
outside of our district that the effect
might l>e to reduce the price of our
cotton. It seems to me, however that
all the argument is in favor of the
price being increased, but it will per
haps require a practical test to deter
mine the matter definitely. Our
pc pile are willing to take chances in
the matter, believing that any change
must'lie a change for the better, and
realizing the fact that if the tax should
be a bad thing, it could easily be
abolished. With more Egyptian
cotton being imported into this coun
try than our entire crop of sea island
cotton, it is hard to realize how a tax
up m Egyptian cottnu could be other
wise than beneficial.

G. It, Glenn 8. 8. C.
The charge referred to in the above
letter ate, that \V. It. Skinner did ren
der to the County School Commis
sioner of Coffee county false reports
under oath for the purpose of fraud
ulently obtaining money front the
county school fund that he was not
entitled to. These charges have been
overwhelmingly proven before the
Board of Education, then why was
not the indictment found by the last
grand jury. Will the honorable
Board of Education answer as the peo
ple of Colleo ceuuty would like to
know.
