Washington, July I.—The navy de

“Commodore Watson sails to-day in

will take under his command an

proceed at once off the Spanish coast.”

Washington, June 28.—The navy

Latest News From
Shatter’s Army.
Washington, June 2!).—The opinion
prevails here that within a day or two
at most, Gen. Shatter will have begun
his attack upon the city of Santiago
proper.
The important event of the day was
the general’s announcement that he
; could take the city in forty-eight hours,
but at "considerable loss. Taken in
connection with the announcement
! contained in another dispatch that he
! is going to attack without waiting for
j reinforcements, it will be seen that
j the officials have ground for their ex
pectation that the first genuine en
gagement of the war will begin in a
very short time.
Numerically, the opposing armies
are not very bifferent, the estimate of
the Spanish forces being placed at
114,000 men, thoroughly entrenched
i and behind barbed wire fences and
blockhouses, against about 18,000 men
| under Shafter. aided by about 4,0(0
Cubans.
One of the gravest elements in the
j problem, however, is the Spanish war
ships, for unless Gen. Shafter is mate
| rially assisted by Admiral Sampson,
who might engage the full attention
of the Spanish ships, their fire upon
the American advance forces would be
very bard to meet.
The military authorities here say
that Gen. Linares has shown great
! military- tact in slowly retiring during
I the 'last few clays, as he has gradually
, drawn our troops away from the pro
tection of the American ships and
! brought them close to the fire of the
Spanish ships in Santiago harbor.
For this reason it was with relief
that the announcement was received
that Shafter had succeeded in landing
1 dl of his artillery, including his sie;e
train, for unless Admiral Sampson can
be relied on to force his way into the
halbor and attack the Spanish shij s
these, siege guns planted on bights
commanding the bay will be the main
o dance of (jen. Shafter in offsetting
the presencs of the Ironclads.
' i official dispatch says 8,000 Span
ish -oidiers are coming from Manza
to reinforce Linares at f’antiag<.
j There is another element to which
designated as the Eastern squadron
and is as follows :
Flagship Newark, battleships lowa
and Oregon, cruisers Yosemite, Yan
kee and Dixie and the colliers Zendia,
Abarenda and Alexander.
The start will be made at once ofl
Santiago. Commodore Watson will
be instructed to bombard the coast
cites ol Spain and to capture or des
troy every Spanish gunboat found on
the coast.
i hit the Terror three times, killing or.o
’ officer and two men and wounding
: seveial others.
The Terror dropped back under the
| cover of the fortifications and was
i towed in the harbor in a sinking con
dition.
|
Later a cruiser and a gun bout start
ed out hut remained undey the protec
lion of the forts.
i Not a single American was hurt.
the military authorities arc giving
careful attention. One man intrench
ed behind earthworks or rifle pits is
worth three men in the open, It is
said that the battles of Cliancellors
viile and Spottsylvania aflorded the
most direct proof on this point.
According to the reports from the
scene of battle, artillery can he em
ployed to a much better advantage in
the attack than infantry, hence it is
believed that Gen. Shafter may con
clude to await the arrival of the artil
lerits now hastening to his relief.

“Some time since I took a sudden cold
and could not get rid of it. Being subject
to catarrh and bronchial trouble I coughed
terribly. I lost my appetite and grew
poor and weak and I did not (eel like
work. I began taking Hood's Sarsapa

peared, I slept well, had a good appetite
and I was better in every way. Last
spring I was not feeling well, I bad no ap
petite and no strength. I resorted to
Hood’s Sarsaparilla and soon felt more
like work. My little nephew was a deli

He has taken a few bottles of Hood’s Sar
