He was requested to make a speech at the close of the convention, and came over from the hotel escorted by a committee, Mr. Wilkinson was introduced by Tempoary Chairman Louis Strickland ol Valdosta, who said the nominee v,oukl be the next congressman from this district. lie made brief acknowl edgement of the honor conferred on him by the contention, and said ap pealingly : “The work has been done; let us all stick to it and win the election.” Mr. Wilkinson stated that he would receive formal notification in due course, and would then give the con vention his answer. He was cheered by the Republicans. At the close erf his remarks lie begged the members cf the convention to go fo work. He was undoubtedly encouraged by the fusion between Populists and Repub licans of the district, which was effect ed by an understanding between Ben Milliken, Populist leader, and Repub lican convention, and talked earnest ly like he expected the party to win in the election. The convention followed caucuses, which began at 10 o’clock this morn ing and lasted till noon. There were discussions among Republican and Populist leaders last night and an agreement on fusion was reached to day. The terms of fusion are for the Populists to support the Republican nominee for cfongress, and for the Re publicans to support Populists state ticket. OAS,TOniA. F. fnhbetf. BRANTLEY’S ACCEPTANCE. Be Promises lo Represent Hie People FlillllullJ, Brunswick, Ga., July 28, IS9S. Messrs. Walter M. Clements, Chair man ; W. E Kay, W. W. Terrell, W. L. Story and V. L. Stanley, Committee —Gentlemen : I have before me your very kind and courteous letter of re cent date, advising me that the Demo cratic congressional convention held at Valdosta ou the 11th inst., had un animously and by acclamation nomi nated me as the Democratic candidate to represent this, the Eleventh con gressional district of Georgia, in the Fifty-sixth congress; and also advising me that said convention heartily en dorsed my cousc in Congress. In response to your letter I beg to say that I accept the nomination thus tendered me, and pledge anew my every energy and the little ability 1 posess to a faithful and honest repre sentation of the people of this district aud to the maintenance and preserva tion of the honor, dignity and glory of our common country. I aai much moved at the manifesta tion of confidence in me that this rc -1 nomination implies, and as well at .the hearty endorsement the conven tion saw proper to give my couse in Congress, amd tho same tills me with a renewed determination to spare no effort to merit and deserve the same.- For the first time in a long period of years our country is engaged in a foreign war, ami in common with our country-men everywhere, I hope for its speedy, victorious and satisfactory termination, and tho early return to peaceful pursuits of our gieat army of volunteers. I share with you a joyous pride in the valor and heroism shown by our r Aimy unu navy, and rejoice with you in the signal and glorious victories they have achived. In the results to follow the wap— the hardens of debt and Vuatlon that must be met, tlj\ disposition of new territory that be acquired, the' possible establishment in this new territory of government by the United States —these and kindred questions will add additional responsibilities to those in power, and in their wise solu tion, there will he ample room for a display of conservative patriotism and judicious statemauship. It is my earnest desire to see the burdens entailed upon the people by this war speedily lightened and the complex problems that may arise met and solved in a manner conistent with the principles upon which this government is founded, and in keep ing with the historic of our past. The great questions that have long been before the country, still pgegs for a solution, and the battle for the bimetallic standard of value, for the masses against the classes, for country against sectionalism, for freedom of commerce for just and equitable tariff laws, and against monopoly and cor porate greed and avarice must go on until victory enshrines our banner and Democracy is restored to power. I renew my loyal adherence to the great truths declared for in our na tional platform, and to accomplish the glorious onda.for which we strive, ffiy humble efforts will continue to be, as they have becu in the past, freely and cheerfully given. The spirit oi harmony and enthusi asm manifested in the convention, and to which you direct my attention, is deeply gratifying, and the pledge of your co-operation and support in bringing about an unprecedented majority in our district in November is gratefully received, and encourages the hope and belief already engender ed by the situation, a I wee it, that such a result is within our reach. 1 acknowledge my indebtedness to each of you gentlemen for the cordial aud generous terms you have used in advising me oi the action of the con vention, and to each of you I tender as surances of my appreciation and high personal regard. \Y.
