Will Monroe, who was wanted
in Clynch county for the murder of
a merchant named Griffin in May
of last year, was shot and killed
near Claxton, Ga., last week.
Hanna says the report that he
expected to retire from the chair
manship tif the National republi
can convention is a base fabrica
tion. That’s what we thought.
The intensely hot weather in the
l’hillipines is prostrating scores of
our soldiers. Poor fellows! They
should be allowed to return to their
native land. We don’t need the
l’hilipines in our business, any w aj,.
A temperance rally is to be held
at Peacock in CofTee county, July
1 and 2. R. B. Reppard of Sav

W’aycross are expected to deliver
addresses on that occasion. Pea

We learn that Mr. Mitchell
Wright, of this county, who has
been sick for a long time with
dropsy, died one day last week,
lie is well anil favorably known
here, and was a gallant soldier dur

Mr. E. A. Buck returned Sat
urday from Douglas, where he
went when he rccieved news of the
burning of his turpentine still.
Fortunately, nothing was burned
but the still, turpentine and a few
barrels, and he estimates his loss at
between S7OO and .fivxv. This is

two weeks in that county, both,
of course, without, insurance.—

The American line steamer Paris,
which ran on the rocks off Man
acles sometime in May, has been
left to her fate by the officers and
crew. It will he remembered by most
of our readers that the Paris was
one of the liners which was con

also chased a good way by a Span

declaration of war, off the coast of
England. It is a great pity to lose

A Trainload of Cattle.
An entire trainload of stock,
j consisting of two carloads of sheep
j and twelve carloads of cattle was
I shipped from Alapaha Tuesday of
j last week, for Oklahoma.
This is the first solid trainload of
cattle ever shipped from this sec
tion of the state. The cattle were
gathered by western buyers from
Irwin, Berrian and Coffee counties.
It is well for the cattle to be thin
ned out, as the steady opening of
land for cultivation decreases the
range, and better and larger cattle
will take the places of those sold.—
Tifton Gazette.
The Wadley and Mount Vernon Railroad.
The road is already completed
rfom VVadley to Rixville and is to
be extended from Rixville to this
city. It will pass through the
counties of Emanuel, Montgomery,
Laurens, Dodge, Telfair, Wilcox,
Coffee, Irwin, Berrien and Lown
des.
It is not know yet what sort of
connection will be used to reach
this city, though it is highly prob
able that the Pinebloom road will
be a part of the new road. The line
from here to Rixville will be 140
miles long and the Pinebloom road
already fills about sixty or seventy
miles of the gap.—Valdosta Times.
Cuba is fast becoming American
ized. They held a lynching bee
over there last Sunday night. A
press dispatch from San Antonio
de Los Buncos says that Jose La
bregrat, a notorious agent of Gen
eral Weyler, who outraged de
fenseless woman and killed chil
dren, arrived there Sunday. llis
appearance was a signal for a gath
ing of relatives and friends of
those whom he formerly persecu
ted. The excitement continued
throughout the day, and at about
midnight a crowd surrounded the
house where he was and began to
threaten him. He attempted to
escape and on meeting the demon
strators emptied his revolver,
wounding two persons. But his
doom was sealed, for the Cubans
closed in on him and strung the
Spanish devil up openly on the
public square.—Dawson Dispatch.
