HHHje people
subject of artesian wells
look fora drainage upon
BPeli“ money, and never think about
fthe many advantages therefrom.
In addition to the healthfulness of
pure water other advantages follow,
tor instance, people will move to a
town that has artesian water, for
its uses does away with malarial
fever, chills and fever, etc., and
with an artesian well water-works
becomes an easy matter and water
can be used in your rooms, kitchens,
offices and stores. In tHe matter
of fire departments an artesian well
is the foundation, it supplies water
for a stand-pipe, the stand-pipe
supplies water-pipes running along
the streets with hydrants at every
block with water at a pressure, and
it is only necessary to have trained
fireman and hose and hose-reels to
form a formidable fire-department,
with the capacity of several fire
steam engines. Four steam engines
will cost SB,OOO with $1,500 for
hose and hose-reels, making $9,500
for a fire department alone, whereas
with an artesian well and water
works the cost would not go over
$2,000, making a saving of $7,000
in that direction and giving better
service, for it is always ready, and
an engine must be steamed up,
burns coal and lias to be pulled.
In case of fire with water works
the hose-reel (or cart) is pulled to
the hydrant nearest fire, hitched on,
water turned on and three or four
streams are playing away at once.
This makes property safer, lowers
rates of insurance, gives a better
security for life, and it is seldom
that the fire evei gets to any other
house tllilll tllS one in which it
breaks out, because the pressure is
stronger and the flow of water
steadier. The Breeze could say
more, but the people of Douglas
are sensible, and all these improve
ments will be given the town soon.
Picnic At
The picnic at Mobley’s Bluff last
Saturday was a success, if a big,
happy crowd and plenty to eat
makes a success. Col. Paxon’s

and many went by private convey
ance. Col. A. S. Hall introduced
Judge Dart who made the people
a public speech, to several differ
ent young ladies. Everybody was
in love with himself and felt kindly
toward the other fellow’s sister.
Sorry Breeze’s editor couldn’t lie
there, but he may come next time.
Those W'liD had the fortune to be
present are loud in their prabe of
Col. Paxson, whose liberality and
foresight did so much toward the
comfort and entertainment of the
pic nickers.

Citizens’ Meeting Last Monday Night:
At a meeting of citizens last Mon
day night to discuss measures for
the Improvement of the town,
educational and otherwise, a unani
mous vote was given for the intro
duction of a bill at next session of
the Legislature authorizing the es
tablishment of a system of free
schools in Douglas open to the en
tire county. Steps were initiated
toward an artesian well, also an
amendment to charter of the
city so as to • allow the
floating of bonds for water
works, electric lights and other
internal improvements. A vote
was also taken in favor of a dis
pensarv, net proceeds of which go
to the public schools to be estab
lished here. A committee has been
appointed to prepare all necessary
bills looking to the above.
Camp-Meeting at Gaskin’s Spring.
The annual camp-meeting will
begin on Tuesday night, Septem
ber 12th at 7:30. The public is
cordially invited to attend. We
shall expect the pastor of the Bap
tist circuit and the pastor of the
Baptist church at Douglas to be
with us throughout the meeting.
Just anyone who 4 desires to help
the cause f Christ, and have a
legacy of blessing to their children
and cause the generations to come
to rise up and call him blessed, let
him go and build a tent and remain
throughout the meeting. Throw
down all prejudices, trust Jesus for
results, come praying and believing
and the day is ours. J. P. D.
