DOUGLAS, GA„ SATURDAY, OCT. 6th, 1900. State and County Election. Returns from all parts of the county shows that the election last Wednes day was a very quiet one compared with those of past years. A good deal of whiskey was used, but it must have been of a tolerable fair variety, for there were no bad cases of drunken ness. Another thing noticeable in. this elec tion was the way in which the people sat down on the independent candi dates. Most of the voters shot straight votes, and stuck to the party nominees, showing the independent candidates that the people would call for them when their services were needed, and that self nomination would not do in Coffee county. It may be that the independents had a good deal of fun while the campaign was going on, but they have made a mistake, and de -1 stroyed their political usefulness in j future. It is not believed either party | will ever take up either of them for any I purpose in the future, and so, it may ! lie considered that these gentlemen 1 have dug their own official graves, to the regret of their friends, of whom the editor has always been one. The struggle in this election was between the two parties, and was not an au spicious time for outside independent candidates, therefore the gentlemen i were defeated. They arc all clou r I gentlemen, good citizens, well liked, ! but for one time their judgement was i at fault. | The entire state ticket was elected by a small majority. T/.e consolidated returns show how close the votes were, and ho were elected. Senator Johnson and Ordi nary' Young had no opposition and re ceived good votes. FOR RKPKESKNTATIVIS: Arthur Lott 778 C. How, often in life have these sad words stirred our sympathy, and caused feelings of sorrow for the dear mother who had stood by baby all through its sickness, and at last saw the little tired eyes close, feel the little heart flutter, and the angel spirit was in the other world. Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Strickland, out at Upton have just lost their lit tie one, not quite a year old. and they are sad to-night. It was a sweet, gen tle child, with few complaints, but Pearlie is gone now. The little soiled dresses are folded away, the cradle is empty, and the little darl ing is in glory land. Pearlie was born Sept. 23, 1899, and died Sept. 15, 1900, and was buried at New: Hope church. The bereaved ones have our sympathy. House Keepers.
