Will Visit the Georgia Trade.
Atlanta manufacturers and mer
chants will visit the Georgia trade this
fall on a special train. The matter is
already being pushed; it has some of
i the most influential men of the city
j behind it, and there is no longer any
1 doubt that the trip will be made.

Dispensary Contest in Wilkes.
The dispensary fight is warming up
- again in Wilkes county. The primary
in which the matter wid be settled
takes place on the 30th of this month
and both sides are beginning to bestir
themselves. It is the last quarter and
both sides are beginning to put in good
work.
Lightning Slays Two.
During a terrific thunderstorm at Sa
vannah Sunday afternoon Thomas
Roe, a watchman at the Ocean Steam
ship wharves, and Lizzie Williams, a
small negro girl who had brought him
his dinner, were instantly killed by a
bolt of lightning. Another girl stand
ing two feet from the Williams child,
was unharmed.

New Fort Valley Enterprise.
Work on anew cotton seed oil mill
for Fort Valley is now under good
headway and its directors report
it will he ready for business by Octo
ber 15th, next. The capital stock of
the company, $25,000. has already been
paid in in cash, the machinery ordered,
and every obstacle to the success of

Governor-Elect; Attends Bv'-becue.
Hon. J. M. Terrell, governor-elect,
was entertained with an immense bar
becue by the people of Lee county.
Mr. Terrell was accompanied by sev
eral state house officials from Atlanta.
It is said that nearly every citizen of
Lee county was on hand. The annual
barbecues of the Lee county people
never fail to be a success, and there is
no doubt but that everybody enjoyed
the day.

Notice to Non-Borrowers.
Judge Don A. Pardee has issued or
| ders to the effect that all non-borrow-
I ing stockholders in both the Southern
Home Building and Loan Association
and the Atlanta National Building and
Loan Association who desire to parti
cipate in past or future dividends shall
file their claims immediately with the
receivers, John T. Pendleton for the
Southern Home and Ligon Johnson
and George A. Speer for the Atlanta
National.

State Shoot a Brilliant Success.
The state rifle shoot at Camp Can
dler, near Macon, came to a close last
Saturday afternoon after a most suc
cessful week.
Experienced military authorities say
that the practice was the most satis
factory ever held in Georgia. The at
tendance of the troops was as large
as has ever been known, and the re
sults of the practice were highly grati
fying.

Livingston Thanks Voters.
In a note addressed by Congressman
Livingston to Chairman W. H. Broth
erton, of the executive committee of
the fifth district, the congressman ex
presses his thanks to the democrats of
the district and to the delegates of the
convention for their confidence in him
and his work. In the course of his let
ter Mr. Livingston states that he did
not miss a single session of the past
congress during the seven months it
sat. at the capital.

Georgia Melons to England.
Agent McWilliams, of the Southern
- Express Company at Cuthbert. in com
| pliance with request from head officer
; of his company, has secured a half
j dozen of the largest watermelons to
be found and shipped the same to
I England.
They go to the officer now in Eng
land, who is said to want them for the
i inmates of the royal palace. The re
quest is regarded as a compliment to
the Georgia melon and this section.

Douglas Gets New Depot.
Ground has been broken at Doug
las for the building of anew depot
by the Atlanta and Birmingham rail
road and the work will be pushed rap-
I idly to completion.
Three car loads of iron arrived a
| few days ago for the Mount Vernon
1 and Wadley railroad. This road runs
from Douglas to the Ocmulgee river
and has 'been ready some time for
track laying, which will begin at once.

Retail Merchants to Organize.
The retail merchants cf Georgia will
i meetin Warm Springs on July 22
i and 23 for the purpose of forming an
j organization, looking to the better pro
tection of the retail merchants of the
state and country.
The retail grocers of the state have
already formed an association and
have become affiliated with the Nation- i
al Grocers’ Association. The meeting j
to be held in Warm Springs is to en- i
large this grocers association so as to
take.- in a 1 retail merchants of all lines
of business in the south.

convention unanimously adopted reso- j
lutior.3 calling upon the legislative j
committee to secure an amendment to |
the constitution of the state whereby j
county officers will all be elected for [
terms of four years each.

Vets to Meet at Griffin.
The survivors of the Thirtieth Geor
gia regiment will hold a reunion on
the 25th. Ex Governor Boynton was
the colonel of the regiment at the
close of the war and the reunion is to
be at Griffin on his account, as he is
unable to travel by reason of feeble- !
ness.
President Ozburn invites every vet- j
eran who can to meet with the Thir- j
tieth on the 25th. All members of tbe
regiment are especially urged to be |
nre'sent, but the president wants it
tdearly understood that any veteran
will be made welcome. A special re
duced rate from ali points in the state
has been obtained and a large attend
ance is expected.

Commissioners Meet in Nashville.
Commissioner of Agriculture O. B. [
Stevens has received notice that the |
next meeting of the commissioners of j
agriculture cf the southern states will j
be held in Nashville, August 20, 27 and
28. Both Commissioner Stevens and i
Assistant Commissioner Wright will j
attend the convention this year and
will read papers. State Entomologist
W. M. Scott will also attend. The sub
ject of Mr. Stevens’ paper will be “Cot
ton Raising in Georgia.” Assistant
Commissioner Wright will speak on
“The Industrial Growth of Georgia,”
and State Entomologist. W. M. Scott
will read an interesting paper on “The
Treatment of the San Jose Scale.”

Lee is Refused New Trial.
Judge John S. Candler, of the crimi
nal superior court, at Atlanta, has re
fused anew trial to Millard Lee, slay
er cf Miss Li-lla May Suttles.
The defense will prepare a bill of
exceptions to Judge Candler's decision
and carry the case to the supreme
court.
Several weeks will likely elapse be
fore the supreme cMurt renders a decis
ion, and in the meantime a stay of sen
tence "ill have to be secured. Lee is
sentenced to hang on July 21. but that
date will have passed before the ap
peal is acted on.
In the event the supreme court
should deny the prisoner another heal
ing, he will have to be resentenced by
Judge Candler. Still another course
would be left to escape the noose and
that is through the pardoning board
and governor. Should anew tria 1 be
granted. Lee will have another chance
for his life before a jury.
DALLAS SUFFERS FROM FIRE.

Fire at Dallas, Tex., Wednesday
morning, eomp'etely destroyed the
wholesale drug houses of Patton. Wor
sham & Cos.. Texas Drug company. J.
W. Crowdus Drug company, and H. W.
Williams and Cos. The wholesale pa
per house of Searff & O'Connor was
badly wrecked and considerable dam
age was done to the Santa Fe depot
adjoining. Loss will reach $225,000.
SOUFFRIERE VOLCANO THUNDER
Three Loud Detonations from Fiery
Mountain on St. Vincent.

there were three loud detonations
from the Soufriere volcano on the is
land of St. Vincent between 8
and 9 o’clock at night.
Advices from Barbadoes say that
loud detonations were heard there
Wednesday night from a westerly di
rection.
