KBTBOSPFIMVE & PROSPECTIVE.
At low twelve hut Friday night, the
old year politely bade us adieu, and
]887, young and lusty, gracefully step¬
ped upon flic board of Time. To in¬
dulge in a little reflection on such oc¬
casion* is most natural.
How has passed tlio year with us,
and with our friend*? Of course, in
a measure, the same ns the many
that have preceded It. To some, in a
generous manner, it lias brought joy
and happiness, and their venture*
have been crowned with success; to
them this uncertain life of ours pre¬
sents a pleasant aspect mid their
breasts are, or ought to be, filled with
the millc ot human kindness towards
1 licit* unfortunate brothers who have
boon forced by circumstances to drink
the bitter dregs of life, and to whom
the ht*t year as other years before, has
had in store for them only k tiff.-rings
and miseries. Maybe the hard earn¬
ings of many years of thrift and in¬
dustry “lmvc taken to th«*ni*elvcs
wings and flown away,” or perhaps
fcickiiegs or death has invaded their
household and removed from them
1 hose (hey held trust dear. It is safe
to say that in the aggregate of human
life sorrow greatly predominate* over
happiness, hut con staut reflection
on our misfortunes, and continual
brooding over sorrow only deepens
our grief and causes additional mis¬
ery. The man whose strength of
mind elevates him above Ids Iron tiles
is enabled to sec many pleasant fea¬
tures in life in the very face of afflic¬
tion.
Our community a* a people have
much for which to be fhankful. While
1-W ran not be called a year of boun¬
tiful harvest, yet no famine ha* oc¬
curred and we liavw enough to live
upon, if cholera did chisel desola¬
tion through the Imgs, still the beef

Oar Town and Section as Seen by a
Northern Visitor,
In 1871 the railway from Macon, in
the heart of Georgia, to Brunswick,
the fiitcsl harbor on the Atlantlccoast
south of New York, was Completed.
The officials of the road selected as

miles around ’twas an unbroken pi tic

stiay farm now and then of a few
teres. The aurcliaa slate was, how¬

bryonic city to spring up as If by
magic.
The stillness was suddenly broken
by the echo of a thousand axes, the
pines were boxed, anil the virgin ros¬

swaying trees. Gathered by the busy
