WEDNESDAY. JUNE 22. t887.
LETTER FROM FLORIDA.
A Flourishing Town-•-Bountiful Snr
roundliiffs---Yollow Fever, Etc.
Bartow, Fla., June 18, 1887.
Mr.-Editor: After looking over
most of south Florida, I decided to lo¬
cate in Bartow, the county site of Polk,
county. Tho town has been on a con¬
siderable boom for the last few years.
Four years ago its | population num¬
bered about 100, and now wo have
something over 2,000, and without the
aid of flowery advertising. The for¬
est has been cleared away, and the
town built by those who were induced
to believe from its rich surrounding
country and healthful eliinatethat they
would find in it a good opening for
business for themselves and pleasant
homes for their families. Such lias
been the development of Bartow with¬
in tliis short time that evidences of
wealth ami progress are seen on every
hand.
A large per cent of the people in this
section are from Georgia. There are
two gentlemen here from Montgomery
county—Messrs.- Gav and II. W.
Snell. They have made considerable
money. The former made his specu¬
lating in real estate. Several years
ago hi* purchased a corner lot on Main
street for $1(50, and afterwards sold it
for $2,000, ami is not at all pleased with
his trade, as it sold again a few weeks
later for $2,800.
Tills steady and inostenfaf ions growth
has saved it from an evil known in
Florida as the “die hack," a condition
where capital invested in property at
fictitious values must he idle and wait
for further development.
There is considerable excitement in
regard to yellow fever. We are quar¬
antined against the world and the
world has quarantined against us.—
Every item of conversation contains
more or less yellow fever news. Eve¬
rything is excitement, producing a
feeling of mistrust in the minds of
those who would otherwise give no
more than a passing thought to such
rumors. Bulletin hoards are set up at
all points, and crowds of eager people
gather around and-discuss each fresh
hatch of news ns reported. The coun¬
tryman, naturally mistrusting the as¬
surances of the city merchant, catches
up the various riqxvrls and goes home
to spread consternation among his
neighbors by a recital that is incredi¬
ble on aceoirnt of the mixture of ru
mors and of his fears. All precautions
are being take ! by tin; various offi¬
cials to plan* the t >wn in tin* very best
sanitary condition, and the citizens
recognizing the importance of the
step, and the hew tits to he derived
therefrom, show con.Vitlerable zeal by
cheerfully complying with all instnie
tions; aiul still tho Cuban doctors say
that there is no yellow fever in Key
West. What a mighty scare for a lit¬
tle thing. S. A. E.
All over the South, just now, King
Cotton is reaching out for his crown.
There arc peoplo in this world who
uccm to he utterly oblivious to the
misery they cause when they “drop
into poetry.”
Women in Mothor Hubbards arc not
allowed on the streets of Albuqucr,
N. M. Men in shirt-sleeves, however,
maybe found at every street corner.
Cleveland has returned’ to the
White House, but tho wonderful talcs
of his powers as a fisherman will con
tunic to flow from the pen of the
porter.

The taxable property of the Central

brace the road bed and outfit of cither

There, under their charter, arc exempt

Tho yfcllow fever fright has subsi¬
ded in Savannah; it is to be hoped
that with the quioting of fear no re¬
laxation may occur in the precaution¬
ary measure adopted..

Enjoy Life.
What a truly beautiful world wc
live in! Nature gives us grandeur of
mountains, glens and oceans, and
thousands of means of enjoyment. Wc.
can desire no better when in perfect
health ; but how often do the major¬
ity of peoplo feel like giving it up dis¬
heartened. discouraged and worn out
with disease, when there is no occa¬
sion for this feeling, as every sufferer
can easily" obtain satisfactory proof,
that Green’s August Flower, will
make them free from disease,as when
born. Dyspepsia and Liver Com¬
plaint are the direct causes of seventy
live per cent, of such maladies as
Biliousness, Indigestion, Sick Head¬
ache, Costiveness, Nervous Prostra¬
tion, Dizziness of the Head, Palpita¬
tion ot the Heart, and other distress¬
ing symptoms. Three doses of Au¬
gust Flower will prove its wonderful
effeet. Sample bottles, 10 nts. Try it
