Editor Journal : Since I have
been a subscriber to your valuable pa
per, which I read with a deal of inter
cat each week, I have seen but few
notes from our flourishing little town.
and I thought I would endeavor to
give you a brief sketch of what is go
ingon in and around licit*.
Under the head of improvements I
notiee that Mr. W. It. Ryalsis adding
more rooms to his dwelling, which,
when completed, will be one ofexquis
»'s taste and finish.
C'apt. John I.. Day is also having
some neat improvements made upon
bis premises. Signs ot the
brush arc to be seen on all sides. lie
has just bad his front fence (iron)
painted, as also the porch and
columns 111 front of his already
dwelling, thus rendering it one of the
handsomest in this part of the State.
Mr. L. R. Ncasc contemplates add
to aud otherwise improving Ills
residence at an early day.
Mr. “Mic” McRae, Jr., is also ini
proving, in various ways, his premia
c* 1 . and when the same are completed,
he will have a lovely home.
The church buildbig (Methodist) at
this place, is undergoing a thorough
renovation, and the wood-work inside
will soon be ready for the painter’s
brush. The painting will be done by
the boss painter of this section of
Mr. W. W. Thomas of your
town.
Thc membership ofthe church have
just ordered a fine boll, and it will be
put in po-ition upon ils arrival.
Capt. Job,. L. Dav (whose libcralitv
knows no bounds) is one of the prime
movers in improving this church edi
flee, and whenever he puts his “shout
der to thc wheel” tilings never fail to
move.
Through the untiring energy of Mrs.
Day, (Capt. John L’s estimable wife)
assisted by other good ladies of the
town, the church has been supplied
with an elegant silver communion
service, a handsome carpet and chan
dclier. When thc buiding has received
the finishing strokes of the painter’s
brush,‘.it will be one of the handsomest
houses of worship on thc E. T. V. &
G. Railwar.
Oui popular townsman, J. B. Itey
nolds, M. I)., comes to thc front this
season as quite a successful cancgrow
ei% having produced from the cane
rained on less than an acre of land, 8
barrels of syrup, with 36 gallons to the
barrel. How is this for cane growing
on “poor wiregrass land?” Dr. R. i*
one of Lumber City’s leading, cuter
prising citizens, enjoy# a tine practice
as a physician, aud by his genial, ur
banc demeanor is very popular with
the masses in this see:ion, and wliercv
cr he is known.
Dr. W. M. Ilyals is doing a prosper
01 *s business in tlie ding line in this
plac - , ami also enjoys a liberal prao
dec. Mr. J. It. (dement* is the polite
and efficient salesman in the drug
store of Dr. It., and tills the position

Mrs. John D. McLeod was the vic
tim a few days ago of a slight paralytic
stroke, but is gelling along nicely at
this writing. Her husouud, “Colonel

There is a government boat being
built at this wharf, to be Used in clear

and Ocmulgcc rivers, thus rendering
these streams navigable al all seasons
of thc year l’or larger steamers than
now ply them. The construction of
this boat is under the supervision
Inspector F. V. Armstrong, a pleasant
gentleman, working a clever, steady
set of men.
Thc Amcrleus, Preston & Lumpkin
Hail road authorities seem to have an
‘eltphaut on their hands’ in the steam

purchased andjmt upon this (the Oc

terminus of said road) and Savannah.
for the purpose of shipping cotton, liu
val stores, etc. The boat turns out to
he an old rotten aflair, much too large
for ‘he river, and in many respects
unfiMcd for the service it was intend¬
eft to perform. She lett Abbeville on
Monday, 14:li inst., loaded with 1150
bak*H of euttuii, ami after an eventful
run of more than two days, she ran
upon a shoal of rock just above our
landing, and is still there, with 8CV
eral holes 111 her bottom, and fears
were entertained at first of her sink
mg, but the siphon was kept in con
slant operation. Capt. Day, the well
known steamboat man, has tendered
the Alice Clark thc use of one of his
boats to be used in removing the cot
ton so that the unfortunate vessel could
float off of thc rocks. Capt. D. ha*
known thc Alice Clark lor a number
of years, and sav-. aside from horsizc
she is rendered unlit for service bj
long usage in other waters. He is
also of the opinion that if the boat in
qu'-stion had a co npetent/pilot she
might be more successful In keeping
in the current of the stream.
Thc post office al Lumber City !

There is not a town in Georgia that
has made more rapid strides upward

the past five years. There has been
least twenty brick business bouses
c, ’ cctctl hero during that period, while
(hive are in course of construction

as many more. In addition 10 this,
numbers ot dwelling .houses have
been built, and as wc write the uni

in every direction reminds us that the
good work is still going on. But
peering into tin dim vista of the fu¬
ture even a casual observer will
ily see that the crow ning glory of ynr
prosperity lies in the very near future,
and what is true of the town equally
applies to this entire section of coun¬

Editor Journal: I am now in the
sands of South-east Georgia, GO miles
from Savannah, on the Central Rail¬
road.
At Waynesboro, the county scat of
Burke county, I paid 50 cents per feed
for my lior*c and could not get fodder
for him at that. Everything is cotton,
and credit, and they have been the
ruin of this section. Year after year
the crisis draws nearer. Lots of boy*
17 or 18 years old are here who never
saw a hog knocked. A story is told of
a hog-killing in this section a few
years ago, to which thc community in
general were invited. Of course every
body turned out, and as is too often
the case in this part ofthe State, some
fellow carried a jug of liquor. Well,
the fattening# were hurridly slam and
soon hung head downwards, waiting
for the animal heal to pass out, that
salt might be applied. While tiie bi¬
llies busied themselves preparing “car¬
toons" for sausage meat, cleaning feet,
hashing liver*, etc., the men engaged
In a little revelry by paying their re¬
spects to tl.c demijohn, which left no
one to care for the porkers. To tell
the story in as few words as possible,
in the afternoon things were righted
about in the smoke-house and the
-boats sent for. All were swinging
exactly as left, except a choice “stag”
which had very mistcriously changed
positions, and was out of view. The
wind, it is true, was blowing some but
not sufficiently so to carry oft the
choice bog and leave the lighter. All
scl to hunting, and the secret was soon
out. Just over the fence could be seen
signs on the grass which lead to inves¬
tigation, and developed the following
fact, which is well vouched for: While
no one watched, a cat had noislcssly
climbed upon the ganows, seized the
swine ami carried it quite a distance
into the eottoa field and almost con¬
sumed it. Thc cat was ot usual size
and showed some resistance when ap¬
proached by the searching party. A
lively chase ensued, but the poor ani¬
mal was overtaken and deprived ot its
prey before its meal was half over.
I have lint had a toothsome piece of
steak or slice of Georgia bacon since
i left Augusta. Broad cotton fields
meet my gaze on every side. The peo¬
ple of Screven county arc quite gener¬
ous and do all they can for themselves
and other#. The only trouble is they
got started wrong ami every time they
turn over a new leaf it reads worse
ami worse.
Lumbering and naval stores manu¬
facturing is being engaged in by Sa¬
vannah ami Augusta capitalists.
“Fence or no feliec” Is also being agi
tated. and in some sections of this
county bitter feelings exist.
Every body vote* the Democratic
ticket, and when an Independent can
didate come# out he is wailed upon by
committee ami a*ked to decline,
which he invaribly does.
No killing frost has visited this eoun
