EASTMAN, GA., FRIDAY, AUGUST 2 , 1889 . Educational Meeting. A meeting was held at the Kastman Academy July 30 to *'der the propriety of adapting school system at this Dr. E. II. Bacon, chairman, M. L. I Burch, Secretary, 1 A communication front L A. Hall, who was absent, pressed the idea that he was, reflection, opposed to a graded school, mainly because of the sl »all " ize of our city. < 'ol. Fisher was next heard K-om in person and was not is fa vor of a graded school, but he was in favor of a prescribed course study with the usual degrees Freshman, Sophmore, Junior and Senior. I rof. K. J Sirozier followed Di Fisher and asked the question if any one present knew of a graded school in the State without free lie thought, too, that it was unwise to pursue this system without free tuition. Rev. 1’. A. Jessup said that he never had in \-few such a system as xvas in operation in Macon and other cities; and by an exhibition of some originality on our part and a spirit of progress generally, we might meet the objectionable points, and grade the school, with out, of necessity making tuition free. Mr. Jessup said the situa Don was urgent, and that we must something. Judge M. L. Burch said he was in favor of some ])lan to inspire more life in our school. He was willing to call them Freshman and Sophmore if this would do it. lie asked Brof. Sirozier to give tts his views in detail. CORRESPONDENCE. FURNISHED FROM ALL AOtA’D US. McRae. McRae. July 29.—On last urday about 2 o'clock there red a difficulty between Wright and John Lancaster Lewis Clark, which resulted Mr. Clark getting his head ously bruised and Mr. John Lan caster having several bones in right hand broken. While Swinev was attending to the bro ken bones of John Wright Lancaster, (he sheriff, and Edvvard McRae, ex-sheriff, in con tack and afier a few words, which chine from an old grudge that had existed for sev eral years, and upon the ance of Mr. Wash Lancaster, three began the combat, resulted in the latter receiving mortal wound through the and his son, Wright, was shot in the calf of the leg, while Mr. McRae was severely cut in the left side. Mr. Wash Lancaster died about 4 o’clock Sunday Mr. Edward McRae and Wright Lancaster are still confined to their beds without much improve ment. It is rumored that this is only a beginning of the trouble between the two families. All parties concerned are friends to the writer, and we deeply regret the occurrence. Mr. Charles Smith, the hand¬ some superintendent of the mcr cliantile firm of McRae it Bush, of Towns, proves a great attrac¬ tion to the lady customers Brof. J. R. J. Be it enacted by the .'General assembly of this State, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same. That liere after in each and every year,when any railroad company in this State, j whose property is now, or may j hereafter be subject to State tax j ation, shall make its annual re j turn of property to the Comptrol | ler General of the State for the purpose of State taxation; they shall, at the same time and by the same officer, under the same oath, make another return in t he follow in;’ Manner, to wit: First, show mg the aggregate value of the whole property of said railroad company; second showing the value of the real estate and track bed ot said company; third, show the value of the roiling stock and all other personal property of company; fourth, showing the value of the company's property in each county through which it runs. Sec. 2. Be it further enacted hv authority aforesaid, That whenever the amount of tax levy of any county, through which the said railroad runs, is assessed by the authority of such county, it shall be the duty of the Ordinary thereof to certify the same and transmit such certificate to the Comptroller-General, and the pro¬ perty of such railroad companies shall he subject to taxation in each and every county through which the same passes to tlie same ex¬ tent and in the same manner that all other property is taxed, in the manner hereafter set out. Sec. 3. Beit further enacted by the authority aforesaid.
