THU STOltY OF A IMG.
flow the Strange Porker Took
Up With a Traveler.
Spetal to the Atlanta Constitatioo.
Amoski.au, Ga., Sept. 20.—The
conversation had lagged consider
ably, when the wild-eyed parson
from Gum Swamp arose and asked
the permission of tlie congregation
to recite a little incident that hap¬
pened under his observation.
“Not long ago," he began, after
the meeting had signified its will¬
ingness to listen, “1 bad occasion
to visit Dublin, which, you all
know, is about thirty miles from
where 1 live. I started out early,
expecting to reach there bv break
time, transact my business and
'get home by dark. About four
miles from my house, I noticed a
good sized pig on the side of the
road, and from some cause or
other I called him. As soon as
the pig heard my voice, lie sprang
from the side of the road, and
came bounding after the buggy.
To amuse myself, and see how
long lie would keep up the chase,
I kept calling him. V c* went
about two miles further, and the
pig hung on. 1 began to get tin
easy, for fear some one would ar¬
rest me for stealing the porker,
and tried to drive him back, but
nary a drive. After awhile he
found a melon rind, and stopped
to devour it, and I whipped up
the horses in order to leave him;
and .succeeded in soon having him
hid from me Ivy a small hill.
“As the distance increased I
breathed easier, and before long
drew up al Dublin. I alighted in
front of the court house, where my
business lay, and entered, As 1
reached the clerk's office, I heard
a ■■ sound that made my hair raise.
J It was the grunt of a pig, and look
ing around I saw the pig I had en¬
ticed coming in the door, having
climbed a (light of stairs!
"Yonr's?" asked the clerk, point
ing to his pigship.
“I did not reply, but w ith one
kick sent the pig rattling down
the steps, squealing.
“When my business had been
transacted 1 left the court house,
and found the pig waiting for me
at the steps, squealing.
“Bv this time I was almost wild,
and started down the street for a
walk, to lose the blamed hog, if it
was possible. It was not long,
however, before I found that he
could get over ground as fast as I
could, and realizing this. 1 sat
down in despair, and looked my
new found friend in the face. He
Came up to me and grunted satis
taetorily. and hid down beside
the step I was sitting on. |
Presently I saw the man, who
had driven me over, coining to
want me.
. ‘“Boss, he asked, . . .. what ...... tnnevo .....

'“And he shut."
. “As I neaied home, I became
wilder, and when I drew up at the
loor of my house my wife, win
had been on the porch,
for me, came rushing out, and
seeing my haggard face and wild
eyes, asked:
‘“What in the world ails you
parson?’
“I groaned and pointing to the
pig, gasped:
—Is that a pig?—do you see
or am I crazy?’
•••( if course its a pig,' she replied
and looking at it closer asked:

‘“For theft?' she asked, growing
white, ‘wot have you done?’
—Slole that blamed hog’ 1 mut¬
tered.
‘“Stole your pig,’ site laughed.
“•My pig,' 1 asked,‘what do you
mean?’
“‘I mean that this is your own
hog, that got out of the pen this
morning before you left, and I
have had the boys looking for him
everywhere.’
“The light broke ove.t me, the
poor fellow had gotten lost, and
recognizing me, had stuck close to
my heels, knowing that it would
take him back home ”
There was a large, heavy-browed
silence in the congregation as the
parson finished; broken by him
asking:
“Don't you reckon that hog
thought 1 was a fool to run from
him like I did."
We all thought. E. N. W.
