Of Hancock county.

Fourteenth District Senatorial j
Democratic Convention.
the A counties convention composing of delegates this Sena- from j
torial district is hereby called to j
convene at, the Court house in
Hawkinsville, Oa.,on VVednesdav,
September 10th, 1800, at 11 o'clock
a. in., to nominate a candidate for
Senator to represent this district
in the next General Assembly. |
and also to select a new Senatorial
Democratic Executive Committee.
Kadi county in the district will
be entitled to two votes in the con¬
vention for each Representative the Legisla
in the Lower House of
t ure.
By order of the K.yaco.ive Com
mil tee of t he Fourteenth Senate
rial district. J. I). Stetson,
Chairman.
The Georgia State School fund
for this year amounts to $743,420.
Cotton has tumbled several
points within the past few days.
It is very seldom that we see a
bale of cotton wrapped in cotton
bagging._
And now Norwood is to oppose
John B Gordon for the United
.States Senate.
From the present outlook we are
afraid that Tom Woolfolk, Bibb’s
pet, will yet die ot old age.
Small l’ox is raging in many
portions of Texas, and quarentine
vest fictions is being placed in many
of the cities.
The Brunswick Post reaches us
semi occasionally, What’s the
matter Bro. Kent? You have a good
paper and we enjoy reading it
when we can get it.
Work has been begun on a new
depot at Scotland, It will be re
membered that the old one was
burned several months ago.
Ie you do anything worthy of
mention, or observe anything of
local interest, do not feel a delica¬
cy in making us acquainted with
the same. That is the way to have
a good local paper.
There will be no nomination for
Senator in the 15th district, and tiie
itrrrrt John McRae and Mr. Clayton
Clements, both of Montgomery
county, will submit their claims to
the entire voting population of the
district. It promises to be one of
1 he most exciting contests ever
known in the district.
Mr. LaGripims has returned to
New York, and is once more bring¬
ing his pernicious influenza to
bear on the people. We hope lie
will give Eastman the go by this
winter, as we all remember his
visit here last winter, and he was by
no means a welcome visitor.
'J'he Junior editor of the Corde
lean is doubtless in love. Hear him:
“At the first gray streaks of
m< rn there is ’a mocking bird
perched close to our window, and
ihe sweet condordant notes lie ut
ters there thrills us with ecstatic
admiration for this plaintive feath¬
ered songster of the South. Sing
on, oh, bird, until the God who
gave thee music shall call thee
hence.”
In the last issue of the Baxley
Banner appears the photograph, a
splendid representation of Dr. S
AY Johnson, the Democratic nom¬
inee for Representative of Ap¬
pling county to the next general
assembly of Georgia. Dr. Johnson
is a young man, sober and indus¬
trious, is conservative in his views
on all questions, and if elected
will make the county of Appling
a wise and impartial opinion they representa¬ could
tive. In our

lege at all. -Turner graduated at

At the republican Congression¬
al Convention at Americas on
Monday last, Peter O Gibson, 'col¬
ored, of our town was unanimous¬
ly nominated to oppose Judge
Cri.-p in this District for the 52nd
Congress. Peter is a school teach
er and has the reputation of l*e
ing a very good one, but his chances
for being elected to Congress from
this District is slim in the extreme.
Ihe fact is when tlie race is

ever attempted to make a race in
this or any other Congressional
district in Georgia.

The Corn Crop.
Official reports from the west in

The outlook now is that there will
be a shrinkage of about 650,000,

The amount of corn required for
home consumption is said to be
2,000,000,000 bushels, and the to¬
tal crop this year will not reach
those figures, if we may rely ou the
reports from the seven or eight
Western states which produce the
bulk of our corn surplus.
Last year Georgia had an unus
ually large crop, many counties
raising more than they needed. It
is to be feared that the present
crop will fall far below that plen¬
tiful yield, and some of our farmers
who had corn to sell last year may
