L'HJv APPLING COUNTY SEEK
Whose Supernatural Powers

tion and Money.
Baxley, Ga., October 11.—The
vriter has just returned from the
residence of ‘-Doctor” Bill Morris,
vho, if he lives, will be one bun¬
ked years of age the 1st day of
April, 1S92. He is a native South
Carolinian, but has been a resi
lent of Appling for the last fifty
years, engaged in farming, doctor¬
ing the afflicted and telling for¬
tunes. For the latter service his
charges range from one to ten
lollars and four quarts of rye
liquor and a spool of thread. ^
THEY ALL BELIEVE IN HIM.
His patients have the utmost
confidence in him, ar.d will hand
out their last dime as compensa¬
tion for medical service rendered.
He can neither read nor write,
but is a remarkable conversa¬
tionalist, and has a pack of Gre¬
cian cards which he tells his credu¬
lous patrons are ninety years old,
and that there is but one other
p ick like theip in the world. Not
only negroes, lvut white people,
from everywhere come to con-’
suit with him, ofteijej with refer¬
ence to domestic troubles than
anything else. It will be remem-,
bered that Henry "'Jones, colored,
a mail agent on the East l’ennes
see, Virginia and Georgia railroad,
a few years since, was indicted for
stealing a -dr^fL Walter Jfc Hill

view “Dr.’ Morris, who claims to
have successfully “worked the
powers’: in hehalf of Jones.
HE HAS A DOMESTIC “l’l’LL.”
Although Dr. Morris claims to
be able'to control fove affairs, ana
when separated, to cause husband
and wife to become reconciled, it
seems he can do nothing of the
kind fob himself. Recently his
young wife, without provocation
he alleges, deserted his- bed and
board, and in vain has hb, tried to
induce her to return, but up to
this writing she turns a deaf ear
to. ber old man’s appeals. From
present indications “Dr” Morris
will yet live tnany'years to pur

DEVOTION OF A DOG.
A Scene in California That Reads
Like a Veritable Romance.
As a rule railroad men are
about as hard-hearted as the aver
age army of sawbones, says the
Los Angeles Times, and it takes
something out of the ordinary run
I to bring tears to their eyes, but a
whole crew on a Southern I‘a
cific’s local train wept bitter
tears early yesterday morning,and
a mangy, little black dog without
a friend in the world was at the
bottom of their grief.
The Colton local had just passed
a little station called Nathant,
when the engineer saw a man ly¬
ing full length on the track only
a few hundred yards in front of
his engine.
The usual danger signal was giv¬
en, but the man, who appeared to
be quietly sleeping, did^pot brought move
and the train was to a
standstill a few feet from him.
A glance at the body from c ose
range showed the engineer t lat
the poor fellow was stone dead.
In a few minutes the conductor,
engineer and trainmen were stand
ing around the body.
Lp to this time they had not
observed the presence of a little
black dog, but as soon as they ap
proached within a couple of feet
of his master he made a dash foi
the nearest man, and for a few
seconds he fought with all his pu
ny strength to keep tlie men
av ay.
1hey were there for thepurpose
exammitfg the body, however, to
see what coiild lie done, and tie
little .dog .was ", rudely kickeil to
side. He did not howl with
pate .ffs-a-dog generally does wlien
kicked. lie simply gathered him
self up and quietly made his way
between the men’s legs until he
peached his dead master’s head,
when he placed his ugly
tafe by the side of his master's,
and after looking at the intruders
a few seconds lie began
whine, and big tears were noticed
running down his nose.
“I have often heard,” said one
df the witnesses, “that dogs
been known to shed tears, but I
never believed-it until to day,-and
I have lots more respect for the
dog familyjjian 1 ever before had.
When I looked around . at my coin
panions there was not a dry eye
to he seen, and 1 must confess
that 1 have not wept as I wept
this mdthing 'since 1 was a young
ster.. For full^ live minutes we
stood there in the hot sun with
outs heads bared, for, if you be

men doffed their hats as soon as

came nearer to it than we have
for years.
“The old man, who was proba
fily a Mexican section hand, was
removed from the track with more ;
care than is usually displayed in
such sulu cases. His blankets were
carefully spread, and his remains
were handled as gently as a moth-;
er would have done, and all on ac
count of the tears in that little
dog , . s eyes. As » soon „ ^

Washington, Oct. 16. — Repre¬

look very encouraging. The real
contest for the speakership will
not begin until after the Novem¬

likely be short and sharp. “I am
