GEORGIA’S REPUBLICANS.
Talk of a State Convention of the
White Element.
Savannah Morning News.
Atlanta, Ga., April 2.—There is
a movement on foot to hold a con¬
vention of white republicans of
the state soon after the mixed re
publicans meet and select dele¬
gates to their national convention.
It is proposed by the white repub¬
licans to show irregularity in the
selection of (he delegates to the
convention, and demand admis¬
sion thereto on account of their ir¬
regularity. A leading republican,
in speaking of this, said he be¬
lieved a representative white dele¬
gation would be recognized and
seated, especially when it was
shown how the selection of dele
gates to the regular state conven
lion has been manipulated. It is
believed further that President
Harrison will be with 1 he move¬
ment. The leading republicans of
the north are said to favor such a
thing, for they do not expect to
carry a single southern state in the
election. The idea is that all they
expect is the vote in the national
convention, and they are tired of
having to buy it every four years.
This gentleman charged that a
majority of the southern republi
cans who secure places as dele
gates do so for the sole purpose
attending and selling their votes.
SEVENTH DISTRICT REPUBLICANS.
Calhoun, Ga., April 2.—The re¬
publican convention f o r the
seventh congressional district met
at the court house to-day. The
convention was called to order by
Mr. Triplet, chairman of the re
publican committee. Mr Triplet
was elected peinaanent chairman
of the convention and A. W Bal
lew secretary. Speeches were
made by Messrs, Triplet, Ballew,
/,. B. Hargroves and others.
The committee on credentials
reported delegates from every
county in the districts. There were
contesting delegations from IV al
ker county and some wrangling
about Chattooga. There was a
regular war over the adoption of
this report, four or five delegates
at the same time trying to be re¬
cognized by the chairman. Some
of the colored delegates started to
leave the room, but Mr. Triplet ex¬
plained his ruling and their
remedy and quiet was restored.
Dr. Blackwell of Catoosa and J.
Q. Gassett (colored) of Bartow
were elected delegates to the
Mineapolis convention.
W ANT TO 11 ELI* T11K THIRD I’ARTY.
At a caucus of some of the dele¬
gates, held at the court honse last
night, a prominent democrat was
asked inside the bar and sat by
one of the most prominent repub¬
lican visitors who thought the
democrat was a republican. third “Say.
you must give the party
ji-,” said the democrat. “Hush," what;
said the republican, “that's
we must give the third party all
the encouragement we can and let
tbemdivide the democrats. We
have direct instructions from the
central committee to do this, and
we think it will enable us to cam
si me of the southern states.”
This democrat says by this means
they expect to carry Georgia and
North Carolina. Many speeches
were made by white and colored
delegates, all in the end denounc¬
ing the democratic party and stat¬
ing that the safety of the govern¬
ment rested alone in the s s
of the republican in electing tlij?
next president.
AN ABSUKED BOAST.
Gassett of Bartow mentioned
the third party while urging organ
ization for his party, and speaking
of the democrats, said:
After November, when the
third party comes in power, my
democratic friends the republicans. w'ill ask^ to
come over to
One colored speaker eulogized
Tom Watson as the great man of
the third party movement. Out
side of this the third party was
not mentioned.
Probably 500 people of them were demo¬ pres
ent. over two-thirds
crats or once were—before the al¬
liance organization trumped up
the third party.
The convention indorsed by re
solution the republican national
platform of 1S8S and passed delegates a re¬
solution instructing their
to cast thier votes first, last and
all the time for President liarri
son.
JUDGE LESTER DEAD.
End of an Honorable and Useful
Career.
Marietta Ga., March 31. —Attor¬
ney General George N.Lester died
at his home in this county, several
miles from Marietta, last night.
Over a year ago .J udge Lester
was stricken with paralysis, and
never recovered, With that
heroism' which characterized the
man, he patiently bore the great
suffering and confinement—the
first sickness he had ever known
since a child. Last Thursday he
became unconcious and remained
in this state till he breathed his
last.
Judge Lester's record in public
life is in itself a valuable legacy
for those he leaves behind. At
home he was loved and respected
by all knew him, and in ail the
walks of life Ins actions were con
trolled by those noble qualities in
the character of an upright man.
His public career began at the bar,
for which he equipped himself by
the flickering glare of a pine knot
fire—obtaining an education by
reading at night after a day of
labor in the fields. That energy
and determination which lifted
him out of adversity carried him
onward to positions of promi
nence where lie became distin
guished for his ability and devo
tion to public interests.
When the war broke out be¬
tween the states, he was loyal to
the south and made a brave soldier.
At the battle of Perryville, Ky.,
he lost his right arm and was ta
ken prisoner. After his recovery
he represented the seventh district
in the Confederate congress, and
since that he has held many
prominent positions. For several
years he was judge of the Blue
Ridge circuit, and was elected at¬
torney general in October, 1890

The Home of Peek is for White
Supremacy.
Conyers, April 2.—The democ¬
racy is triumphant. Democrats
filled the court house here today
in respect to a call from the chair¬
man of the executive committee.
Binging speeches were made by
Dr. Stewart, Judge A. C. McCalla.
G. W. Gleaton, J. N. Glenn, J. C.
Barton and others, and every
allusion to tho grand old party
was cheered to the echo. A new
executive committee, all solid
democrats, was elected, with Dr.
J. A. Stewart chairman.
J. N. Hale, A. J. Smith, W. M.
Richardson and G. W. Gleaton
were elected delegates to the May
convention in Atlanta. They go
untrammeled, a majority favoring
a western man for president.
Resolutions renewing allegiance
to the democracy and recommend¬
ing that the national convention
at Chicago give due consideration
to the Ocala demands, were
passed. A majority of Rockdale's
alliancemen are democrats, and
you can put Rockdale, the home
of Peek, solid for white supremacy
and against more pensions for fat
yankees.

From Altar to Grave.
Pomona, Cal., April 4.— Among
the tourists who came from the
east to spend the winter in south
ern California last November was
Miss Mollie Beach and her parents
from Chicago. They were wealthy,
and settled in this neighborhood
in the hope of finding relief foi
Mollie’s rapidly advancing pul¬
monary consumption. They were
soon joined by George E. Quay, a
nephew of Senator Quay, of Penn¬
sylvania, who had been the ac¬
cepted lover of Miss Beach.
Everything that could be done for
the invalid was tried, but she
grew more feeble. In February
she went to Arizona, accom¬
panied by her parents and lover.
There the disease was not checked
and she continued to grow worse.
.She was told two days ago that
death was near at hand, and then,
persuaded by her lover, she con¬
sented to marriage. Her trunks,
containing the trousseau that was
prepared last year when she was
well and looked forward to a
happy married life, were opened.
The invalid insisted unon being
dressed in her wedding gown as
she lav upon her bed, and thus
robed she was united to Quay by
a clergyman who was hastily sum¬
moned. When the ceremony was
over the bride was put to bed, and
seven hours later she died with a
smTe upon her face 1 Her age
was 21. The body was taken to
Pasadena from Arizona, em¬
balmed, and will be sent back to
Chicago. The bridal gown will be
her burial robe, at her special
request.
