A DASTARDLY DEED.
Shot Through a Window
at Supper With His Tain Up.
Wednesday night last some foul
and wouid-be assassin slipped up
to the window and shot Mr. W. F.
I (Fed) Thompson in the back of
j the head with a charge of buck
shot while he was quietly eating
his supper, surrounded by his
family. Mr. Thompson lived on
i the place of Mr. L. M. Peacock,
nine miles north of Eastman and
three miles west of Dubois. The
news of the affair was brought to
Eastman by Mr. T. F.
a brother of the victim. He gave

was satisfied that he would sue

to cover in a few hours.
It is reported that certain par
ties are suspected of the crime,

THE LIQUOR LICENSES

to Certain Portions of Town.
The council met Thursday after
noonof last week and discussed the
question of liquor licenses for
Eastman. It was decided to levy
a license of .$500 on each firm en
gaging in the business, and that
no saloon be allowed on
Railroad avenue. Other restrfc
j tions were made which will bind
those- engaging in the business
down pretty closely. Only one
-aioon, so far, lias been opened,
but we understand there are two
or three other firms wdio will make
application for license in a few
days,

Mr. L. Moore is here engaged in
rebuildhl „ the drv kiln. During
the recent election a blue flag
floated eighty feet in the air from
the top of one of the chimneys of
this building. Amoskeag was loyal
to the color. From nearly every
residence a blue flag fluttered to
the breeze, and upon the office the
flag still waives, emblem of purity
and constancy.
Mrs. Harris, who has been on a
visit to Alabama, has returned to
her home here with her daughter,
