BRUNSWICK’S BIG BLAZE
A Half Million Dollars in
Swept Away.
Brunswick was visited by
most disastrous fire in her
last Friday. The 11 times swept
away over a half million
worth of property like a Hash.
The fire caught in the
& Western wharves, and in a
hour the flames had spread to
the property adjacent.
A large amount of freight in
warehouses, lumber, cross-ties
naval stores were swept away.
The fire st ripped everything
B iy to Oglethorpe street,
ing the Ocean hotel.
The tire began at 11*30
in the morning, and was not
ten under control until the
morning.
The loss will foot up a half
lion dollars and over. The
ance will amount to $300,000.
Work lias already
rebuilding the railroad^ docks, and
Downing has opened business
temporary quarters again.
One or two deaths resulted from
over exhaustion.
A heavy gale swept over the city
during the progress of the flames.
CAME AHEAD OF TIME.
Pacific Coast Has an Experience Un¬
known for Eighteen Centuries.
A telegram from Tacoma, Wash.,
under date of March 30th, says:
It was Easter Sunday yesterday
on the Pacific slope, although prob¬
ably not more than half a dozen
people knew it. Those who did
know it are ambitious astronomers
and mathematicians.
They find that the first full moon
after the spring equinox put in an
appearance on this coast shortly
after 10 o’clock Saturday night,
and it is a fact that the first Sun¬
day after t lie full moon after the
spring equinox is Easter Sunday
the world over. But in this pecul¬
iar case, said to be the first in¬
stance of the kind since the begin¬
ning of the Christian era, only this
part of tlie Pacific slope has its
Easter Sunday a week in advance
of the rest of the world.
When the moon tilled Saturday
night, reckoning by Pacific coast
time, it was alteady Sunday in
New York and London, conse¬
quently for the east and the re¬
mainder of the world, excepting
the Pacific coast, the first Sunday
after the first full moon after the
ejving equinox will not arrive un¬
til the 5th of April.
Hereafter in the State of New
York it will be unlawful for any
saloon keeper to tempt customers
with a free lunch. It is positively
forbidden by the Raines law. It
seems, however, that this provi¬
sion was inserted upon the sugges
tionof the liquor dealers' associa
tion, who said that if they were to
be forced to pay higher licenses
they wished to be rid of this ex¬
pense. which often foots $3 a day
lor each saloon. So the glory of
the free lunch counter has depart¬
ed from New* Y 7 ork. No doubt the
free lunch counter had its evil ac¬
companiments, but it cannot be
disputed that many a man who
knew not where to get a “bite”
has appeased his hunger at a free
lunch saloon.
Here is a sample of gold standard
prosperity : The tailures in busi¬
ness for the mouth of March, 1895,
amounted to $3,372,471. For the
first two weeks of March. 1896, the
losses through business failures
were $6,799,397. That is gold
standard prosperity of the
land variety.
