A (IKEAT VICTORY.
t
“Cordele, Ga., Feb, 18.—The
decision in the Cordele municipal
contest proceedings was given in
Ordinary Hargrove’s court at
Vienna to-day, and the contest was
dismissed.
i i This is a victory at every point
for the Democratic primary nom¬
inees, duly elected at the general
election on Jan. 11.”
Regardless of who gained the
victory, or how great that victory
may be, its glory pales into insig¬
nificance by the side of the shame
which should follow the fact that
nearly two hundred illegal vofes
were polled in this election. All
except five or six of these were ac¬
credited to the victors. Resign,
Mr. Cutts, and clothe yourself in
sackcloth and ashes.
By the time we get thorough con¬
trol of the Philippines they will
doubtless be well paid for, and
somebody may be sorry “dat dey
bin eat dat possum.”
The Irwmton Bulletin is a re¬
cent addition to our exchange
table. Mr. W. IT. Rutland, for¬
merly of Baxley, and his brother,
J. T. Rutland, are now editors
and publishers. May prosperity
attend them.
And now the editors are all say¬
ing that the recent weather was
the coldest they have ever soon in
this section, just as though they
have been in some other section
and there experienced a lower
standing of the thermometer.
Congress has but nine more
working days in this session, and
it is generally conceded that the
business before the body cannot
be wound up by that time. Pres¬
ident McKinley will, in all proba¬
bility, call an extra session to
wind up affairs.
Tho Rochelle Now Era says that
on Monday night of last week “the
barn and contents of Rev. W. H.
Quattlebaum, of near Kramer,
consisting of several hundred bus¬
hels of corn, fodder etc., were de¬
stroyed by fire.”
Verily, Mr. Quattlebaum must
bo a man of an enormous appetite
and immense promotions.
The policy of the administra¬
tion in regard to tho Philippines
has finally been pronounced in no
uncertain terms, and American
jurisdiction is to bo rapidly ex¬
tended over tho entire islands.
Wo will now doubtless have news
of a good deal of bloodshed and
disorder in those regions.
The last issue of the Cordele
Sentinel reached our desk with
the names of Messrs. J. B. Girrar
deatt and W. A. Snow at its helm.
Eastman is the old home of Mr.
Girrardeau, and he has many
friends here who heartily wish
him abundant success in whatever
he undertakes. Both are bright
young newspaper men, ami we ex¬
pect to see the Sentinel flourish
under their management.
The Oconee Judgjship.
Although the nomination for
judge of the Oconee circuit is more
than a year off the race promises
to be exceedingly interesting. It is
understood that the incumbent,
judge C. C. Smith, will be a can¬
didate for reelection, aud the
names of Captain J. H. Martin
of Hawkinsville, Solicitor General
J. F. DeLacy and Ex-Judge D. M.
Roberts, of Eastman, are fre
queutly heard in connection with
the office.—Abbeville Chronicle.!

the cold weather.
Trade at the store here has been
remarkably good, considering the
condition of the weather.
We arc proud to announce that
our friend, Mr. Larry Dobbs, is
better, and wo believe to be out of
danger.
Rabbit bunting lias been a fa¬
vorite sport during the recent cold
weather. One man said he killed
thirteen, and could have killed
more, but his ammunition gave
out.
We experienced the coldest
weather the past week ever known
in this section. Everything was
covered with snow and ice for two
days, and several of our citizens
got some heavy falls, among whom
wal our postmaster, who had to
have assistance to get on his feet
again.
When Mr. Chaise's little boy
was so badly burned last week, a
messenger on mule-hack Nicholson. Jwas dis¬
patched for Mr. Just
before arriving at the house the
mule stopped and began to run
backwards. The boy, seeing that
the mule was going to fall, jumped
to tho ground. The mule at, once
fell down and was dead in a few
minutes.
The little four-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. II. Chaise, of
near here, was fatally burned on
Friday afternoon of the 10th inst.
We learn that the little fellow
went down to the field where the
older children were at work, and
getting his too close to a burning log
heap, clothes caught on fire.
His screams brought the other
children to his assistance, but be¬
fore the flames could be extin¬
guished his body, from his knees
to his head, was terribly burned.
Medical attention was summoned
and every means of relief adminis¬
tered, but the injury was to severe
to be remedied by medical skill,
and death ended the little fellow’s
suffering on Tuesday morning, the
14th inst. The greatly afflicted
parents and relatives have our
deepest sympathy.
