Ca.pt. Walter Perkins, of Rome,
was in the city this week consult¬
ing with the Stubbs Lumber Co.,
in regard to the purchase of a
large'bill of lumber.
Rev. H. C. Combs, state evan¬
gelist, of the Christian church,
was in our town Tuesday. He de¬
livered a talk at the Christian
church here Tuesday night.
Prof. W. T. Gaulden wili leave
for Waycross the last of this week,
where he will assist in holding the
competitive examination of appli¬
cants for appointment to the na¬
val academy at Annapolis, Aid.
Miss Carrie Burch, of our town,
went to Poulan, Ga., Saturday, at
which place she is attending the
bedside of her father, Col. F. H.
Burdh. who has been suffering with
a carbuncle ou the back of his
neck.

Edwar-ds left Sunday last for a
two week’s sojourn in the land of

Mr. J. B. Girardeau, of McRae,
was in the city Sunday.
Messrs. E. H. Lucas and \V. O.
Lumpkin, of Cuion, S. C., the
new managers of the Eastman
electric light and telephone sys¬
tems, arrived in our town on Fri¬
day last, and at once assumed
charge of their duties. They are
pleasant courteous geutlemen, and
we extend them a most hearty
welcome to our town, trusting that
they may find their new home a
most pleasant one. Mr. Lucas
has a wife and two children who
accompanied him. They are stop¬
ping with Mrs. Harrell on rail¬
road avenue.

Plenty of Ice.
Air. J. M. Jackson, our hustling
ice dealer, seems determined to
keep the people of Eastman cool,
and shows a disposition to accom¬
modate the public in every man¬
ner possible. He is storing his
ice at the B. L. Harrell cotton
yard, and says he will remain
there every Sunday morning un¬
til 10 o’clock for the purpose of
furnishing ice to all who call for
it. He is running another deliv¬
ery wagon, and those who do not
have ice delivered regularly can
call for it from the wagons any
time they are passing. He re¬
ceives a car-load of ice every week,
and is never to be found without
plenty to supply the demand.

Epworth League Serial meeting.
The Epworth Izeague social and
business meeting for May was
held at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Jno. Caldwell on Friday evening
last. Several of the members
read interesting papers on imag¬
inary trips through Georgia, which
were greatly appreciated bv those
present. The sections were as¬
signed as follows: North Georgia,
Col.'C. W. Griffing South east
Georgia, Rev. J. T. Ryder; South¬
west Georgia, Prof.. W. T. Gaul¬
den; Middle Georgia, Miss Susie
Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell
entertained their -guest in a most
charming manner, and the even¬
ing was a most (pleasant occa¬
sion.

The promoters of the Eastman
and Ocmulgee Railway are spar
tug no energy m the interest of
this enterprise, and it is to be sin
cerely Hoped that their efforts
will be crowned with abundant
success.
Every citizen of the town and
section is earnestly urged t.u co¬
operate in every wav possible with
the business men who have the
matter in charge, and to aid as
far as lies within their power in
giving our town a completing line
of railway, which will save thou¬
sands of dollars to our people
every year, and-enable the trading
public of this section to buy the
necessaries of life at a great re¬
duction from the price which they
are now compelled to pay, by rea¬
son of the excessive freight rates
with which our business men are
burdened.
A goodly amount of stock has
already been subscribed, and rail¬
road talk is becoming rife among
our citizens. All are agreed that
Eastman must do something to
keep 111 the forward march of
progress and enable her to com¬
pete with other prosperous towns,
whose citizens are ever wide awake
and ready to secure any advau
tage which may be gained through

greatest stumbling block, and it
is determined that this drawback
shall not much longer hinder her
progress. The only remedy lies
in securing a competing line, and
it behooves every citizen who has
the welfare of his town and sec¬
tion at heart to put his shoulder
to the wheel and assist in onward. pushing
the march of progress
Don’t lag behind, but show the
world that mountaiieous obstacles
are but as sand hills compared
with the energy and enterprise of
the people of the town of East¬
man and Dodge county.

at the Methodist church,

eleven o'clock hour, and the pas¬
tor will preach to the children.

Pharr, of near Chauncey, spent
several days in Eastman this week.
They have recently returned from

received a most cordial greeting
from their many friends here.
We were banded on Tuesday
evening tin- finest stalk of cotton
we have seen this season. It was
grown by Mr. W. R. Foster on
Mr. Levi Lee’s place, and besides
being of hearty growth, had sever¬
al “squares” on it. Mr. Foster
has about ten acres of this kind
of cotton, and stands a fair chance
of winning the distinction of gath¬
ering the first, bale of 1899 cotton
produced in this section.

ses of soda water from one con¬
cern Tuesday. Mr. Elbert is turn¬
ing out, a good article, and it is
appreciated by a large and increas¬
ing patronage.
The members of the Methodist
Sunday-school will hold their pic¬
nic to-morrow at Gum-swamp
bridg- .instead of Baldwin’s bridge,
as was announced. A most pleas¬
• ant day is anticipated.
Mr. .John Harrell has sold the
place where he is now residing to
Mrs. Rebecca Clements, and has
begun the erection of a new resi¬
dence near the home of Col. W.
M. Clements. When completed
it will be a cozy dwelling place.
Mr. . IT. Cowl her, a promi¬
nent, farmer of near Eastman, has
two acres of wheat that will aver¬
age three feet high an 1 that is
well headed throughout, This
shows what, Dodge county will
produce. Any tiling from speckled 1
peas up can be grown here in
abundance.

gia's famous lecturer, will fill an
