tut-ion in any way, in winch they
best subserve its interest.
This is a very generous donation
of Mr. Parker’s, and though he is
abundantly able to afford it. it
nevertheless shows a most laubible
and commendable spirit.
Mr. Parker is a man, who did
not enjoy the advantages of a col¬
lege education, and though gifted
with marked native ability, he
states that he always was some¬
what handicapped in the struggles
of life by reason of this very fact,
and he desires to assist the ambi¬
tious young men of the present
time, who are m much the same po¬
sition that lie was formerly, and
he further states that he does trot
believe that he could make a but¬
ter investment than by endowing
agratid old institution like Mer
cer.
Mr. Parker is a resident ot Mc¬
Rae, where he has lived for sever¬
al years, and where witnessed his
early struggles with adversity.
By strict, economy and good judg¬
ment he succeeded in accumula¬
ting a large fortune, and this do¬
nation to Mercer is but one of
many instances where he has
displayed tlie most urb ■ muled
generosity. notified the board

Bee Hive Items.
Crops in our section are still
flourishing, and the boys are fish¬
ing right often.
Mr. and Mrs. AY. AV. Taylor
spent Saturday night and Sunday
with Mr. and Mrs. George Leslie
at AVesfc Brook. They enjoyed
bee robbing Saturday night, they
say, but we imagine Mr. Leslie
had the robbing to do while the
rest ate honey, as they say they
have never seen any to equal it.
Mr. Leslie caught a fish
day that weighed seven and a half
pounds after being dressed. AVe
are sure they all enjoyed a fine
fish try Saturday night.
Abase ball team has been or
ganized at Bee Ilive and the boys
have done Saturday some afternoons. right good play- \\

One or two crowds picnicked on
Gum-swamp Saturday and report
a fine time, but more
than all was the “red bug”
ing next day.
Mr. Ivey Jessup, of Maureen,
visited Bee Hive Sunday after¬
noon, and after a pleasant call at
Mr. AVesley Taylor’s, where he was
royally entertained, he made his
way homeward, he says, but w<
think different.
