Wo arc aiithorirod to announce the name of
Judge C. 11. SUTTON, of llhlhtklimu County, aw a
Candidate to represent the Slat Senatorial Diatrict in
the State Constitutional Convention.
The many frienda of On. D. O. OSBORNK

the Constitutional Convention.
|y The friends of Maj. J. H. SKELTON an
nounce him aa a candidate for the Constitutional Con
vention.
fy Tlie friends of Carr. JOTIN PEEK announce
him aa a suitable man to represent this County in
the Constitutional Convention.
tftgf” Georgia lias asylums for the
the blind, deaf and dumb, also for luna
tics. Would it not be a good idea while
the Convention is turning things upside
down, to make provision for a genteel
establishment for entertaining and sup
porting broken down superannuated
politicians.
S&~ It would be a good idea for the
friends of the Augusta & Knoxville
Railroad to give some big barbacuesand
have speaking along the line through
this upper section. There are men who
have not had a square meal for twelve
mouths, and under the influence of elo
quent. speaking and a good dinner might
be induced to take a million or so of
stock, ychich would look well on paper.
War f?ews Summary,
Ardahan, a fortified town in Asia, lias
been captured after a hard struggle by
the Russians. 86 cannons and a Pasha
were among the spoils. A portion of
the garrison cut their way through the
Russians and escaped. The comman
der of the garrison will lie court mar
tialed. The Turks admit a loss of 300
men killed and wounded. On the Dan
ube, at Rahova, the Turks fired on a
Russian steamer and set it on fire. The
Sheik-ul-Islam, the head of the Moslem
religion, has proclaimed a holy war on
the Russians, and the Sultan has gone
to the Danube to take command of the
army in person. Rumors of English
intervention are rife. This is about the
gist of the war news, culled from an
hundred conflicting and irrelevant dis
patches.

There arc now more oats made in Thomas
County than in any other county in the
United States.
“ Insults,” says a modern philosopher,
“ are like counterfeit money. We cannot
hinder their being offered, but we are not
compelled to take them.”
The great question of the present is
whether it is better to carry two pounds of
dried apples or a bar of ten cent soap to
the annual donation at the minister's
house.
It is now four years since the coffee
plant was introduced into California,
where it seems to be a success. It yields
a bean of strong aromatic flavor, and grows
as luxuriantly as in South America.
The Georgia Grunge will hereafter be

rial management of Col. E, Y. Clarke,

editor of the Atlanta Constitution.
General Grant will occupy General Ha
deau’s house while he is in London, but
he insists upon paj’ing his own expenses
—New York Tribune.
There is nothing remarkable in the fact
that General Grant will occupy General
Adam Badeau's house, but the puplic will
undoubtedly be astonished at the latter
clause of the above paragraph. —Savannah
News.
We learn that Colonel Wadley, the Pres
ident of the Central Railroad, has received
the following letter from a gentleman liv
ing on the line of the Atlanta division :
“wmwadley
sur
Had a big smash up
near my house last night and i want you to
come here at once and bring G dollars with
you to pay for my colt the colt nickened
the engine did not see it got killed it was a
male.”
Judge Wright, in his charge to the grand
jury nf Decatur county last Monday, said
that he “could not believe there were any
in Decatur county with instincts to low as
to disturb public worship iu the house of
God.” In defining a disturbance of pubile
worship, tho Judge said, in substance, it
was not necessary for a drunken man to
ride a horse through a congregation, or to
use boisterous and profane language, or to
get up a row in order to disturb a meeting.
While this was outrageous disturbance, yet
anything calculated to distract attention —
whispering, laughing, giggling, etc. —inten-
tionally. was sufficient to warrant the jury
in finding bills against any and all such of
fenders.
The following is a court scene in Colum
bus : “ A day or two ago, while Judge
Crawford was engaged in the investigation
of a case, a tall jeans dressed man glided
up to the Judge’s stand and in a deferen
tial whispering tone asked: ‘ls this the
Jedge ?’ Upon receiving a reply in the af
firmative our country friend said : ‘ Well.
Jedge, I has lost a favorite beast, and I
cum to git you to ask the congregation if
any of them had heard or seed her. She
is a mighty nice bay filly. There is a heap
of folks here, and 1 want you to ask the
question now.”
Scientific men in all ages have been puz
zled to assign plausible reasons for the salt
ishness of the sea-water. Two thirds of
the globe may be said to be covered by the
sea ; and therefore taking an average depth
at 8.000 yards, and that this body of water
contains 3J per centum of salt, we have
consequently existing in the sea no less
than 00,000,000.000,000 tons of salt. Were
all this water to be dried up, then we
should have n deposit of salt over the en
tire bottom of the seas equal to 150 yards
in thickness. Were it all taken from the
sea ami spread equally over the whole sur
face of the dry land, it would make a
covering 000 feet in depth.
The Crawfordsville Democrat says : “We
are informed that some brute in human
shape, m the neighborhood of Mr. Wm. G.
Harris, in the 008th district, has lately
made it a practice to cut out the tongues
of cows. Three fine cows, one belonging
to Mr. Romulus Frazier and two to Mr.
Win. Harris, have been lately mutilated
and killed in this manner. We are not in
favor of mob law, but for a wretch like
this, we are compelled to think a little
wholesome hanging would would be a good
thing.”
“ Are we imbeciles?” asks the Warren
ton Clipper. This is a conundrum which
must he given up at once. AVe trust how
ever, that the question is asked only as a
sort of preface to a joke. —Atlanta Con
stitution.

Upon reliable authority it is stated that
General Grant, when lie gets to Europe,
will don the uniform of a General of the
army on state occasions. His recent utter
ance about the dignity of a “sovereign”
are thus made useful, as showing the sort
of food oil which our Ctesar feeds.
