CUT THIS PARAGRAPH OUT.
Kvopv person should know how to treat,
a fresh" wound. Every one is liable to be
placed in circumstances nwav from any
surgical and veterinary aid, where lie may
save his own life, or a friend, or a beast,
simply by the exercise of a little sense.
In the first place, close the lips of
the wound with the hands and hold
them firmly together to check the flow of
the blood until several stitches can be
taken and a haudngc applied. Then bathe
the wound for a long tune in cool water.
Should it be painful, a correspondent says,
take a panful of burning coals and sprinkle
upon them common brown sugar, and hold
the wound in the smoke. In a minute or
two the pain will be allayed, an<l the re
covery proceeds rapidly. In my case a
rusty nail had made a bad wound in my
foot. The pains and nervous irritation
were severe. This was all removed by
holding it in the smoke fifteen minutes, ami
I was able to resume my reading with com
fort. Wc have often recommended it to
others with like results. Last week one of
my men had a finger-nail torn out by a
pair of ice tongs. It became very painful,
ns was to be expected. Held in sugar
smoke twenty minutes, pain ceased ami
promised speedy cure.
Woman.
Place her among flowers, foster her as a
tender plant, and she becomes a thing of
fancy, waywardness and folly; but rouse
her a flections, enkindle the fires of her
heart and mark her then. Place her in the
heat of battle, (livelier anything to pro
tect. She will not betray the trust.
Transplant in the dark places of the earth,
fall forth her energies to action, and her
breath becomes a healing, her presence a
blessing. She disputes inch by inch the
strides of a stalking pestilence, when man,
the strong and brave, pale and all’righted,
shrinks away. Misfortune haunts her not.
She wears away a life of silent endurance,
and goes forward with less timidity than to
her bridal. In prosperity, she is a Imd
full of odors, waiting but for the winds of
adversity to scatter them abroad. Gold,
valuable, but untried in the furnace. In
short, woman is a miracle, a mystery, the
centre from which radiates the charms of
existence.
A Prize Eviay.
At a school exhibition of a town in
Maine, the following essay received the
prize : “ On a tin kle. This animal is found
most always in the water, and then he
conies on dry land. The turkle cannot fly.
If he was the right kind of a bird he could
fly : but if he was a goose bird or an os
tricn lie could not fly. The turkle lias four
paws and a mouth like an American eagle,
which makes the British lion and the uni
corn tremble. The turkle has a shell, and
sometimes folks put fire on it, and the
turkle crawls out. When the turkle
crawls out of his shell lie is very wet and
sticky. There are two kinds of tinkles,
mock turkle and the other kind. We don't
have any other kind in our pond. French
and Irish people eat turkle and frogs, hut
I should not like to. I caught a turkle
oncu, but it did not do me any good, for 1
exchanged it for a jack knife and cut my
lingers. Father said it was a judgment,
but I thought it was a knife.”
How to InereitMe tlic l'low uf Milk.
Southern Industries.
A lady correspondent, writing us from
Arkansas, gives the following excellent
recipe to increase the flow of milk in a
cow, and we can heartily endorse it, for
we have seen it tried. She says : “Tepid
water slightly salted given twice a day will
increase the flow of milk on catbird ; if the
cow will not drink it at first trial scatter a
handful of bran or meal over the top of it.
They soon become very foml of it, and will
drink all you give them. 1 tried this plan
three years ago with perfect success. 1
had only one cow, and she was the com
mon scrub stock of the country, and after
she began to drink the water, prepared as
above, she furnished me twice a day two
ordinary buckets full of milk, and by feed
ing a little corn boiled with cotton seed the
milk yielded butter enough to supply my
table bountifully and leave me a few
pounds to sell every week. 1 gave her
three gallons of water twice a day.”
A Loving Kutlirr.
Make the most of her while yet you have
this most precious of all gifts. Read the
unfathomed love of those eyes the kind
anxiety of that tone and look, however
slight your pain. In after life you may
have friends, fond, dear, kind friends; but
never will you have again the inexpressible
love and gentleness lavished upon you
which none but a mother bestows. Often
do L sigh in my struggle with the hard un
caring world, for the sweet, deep security
I felt when of an evening, nestled on her
bosom, I listened to some quiet tale, suit
able to my age. read in her tender and un
tiring voice. Never can 1 forget her sweet
glances cast upon me when I appeared
asleep—never her kiss of peace at night.
Years have passed away since we laid her
beside my father in the old churchyard,
yet still her voice whispers from the grave,
and her eyes watch over me as 1 visit spots
long since hallowed to the memory of my
mother
Sex of Kars*.
A correspondent of the Southern Far
mer tells how an old poultry raiser distin
guishes sex in eggs. It is related as fol
lows : “ Eggs with the air bladder on the
sides will produce pullets. The old man
man was so certain of the truth of his dog
ma. and the poultry yard so far confirmed
it, that 1 determined to make experiments
upon it this year. I have done so, care
fully registering every ‘bladder verticle ’
or bladder on one side, rejecting every one
in which it was not decidedly one way or
the other, as in some it was only slightly
out of the centre. The following is the
result; 58 chickens hatched ; 3 are dead ;
II too young yet to decide upon their sex ;
of the remaining 44 every one has turned
out true to the old man's theory. 1 tried
it myself and found it to be correct, and I
think it to be of great practical advantage.
I am pleased to give it my full endorse
ment.”

Cherry Pectoral
For Diseases of the
Throat and Dungs,
lulvf/'- such as Coughs, Colds,
WboopinK Cough,
Bronchitis, Asthma,
and Consumption.
The reputation It has attained, in consequence of
the marvellous cures it has produced during the
last half century, is a sufficient assurance to the
public that it will continue to realize the happiest
results that can be desired. In almost every
section of country there are persons, publicly
known ,who have been restored from alarming and
even desperate diseases of the lungs, by its use.
All who have tried it,acknowledge its superiority;
and where its virtues are known, no one hesitates
as to what medicine to employ to relieve the dis
tress and suffering peculiar to pulmonary affec
tions. Cherry Pectoral always affords in
stant relief, and performs rapid cures of the
milder varieties of bronchial disorder, as well as
the more formidable diseases of the lungs.
Asa safeguard to children, amid the distress
ing diseases which beset the Throat and Chest of
Childhood, it is invaluable; for, by its timely use,
multitudes are rescued and restored to health.
This medicine gains friends at every trial, as
the cures it is constantly producing are too re
markable to be forgotten. No family should be
without it, and those who have once used it
never will.
Eminent Physicians throughout the country
prescribe it, and Clergymen often recommend it
from their knowledge of its effects.
