There arc ponds in the woods of the
north whoso waters nre so clear, and
whoso bottoms are so clean, that they can
with truth, be called great pools. I have
gone to them every year, not to fish in
them, not to hunt their shores, but simply
to gar.e into them. 1 have gone to them
by day, to see the mountains in them ; to
see the sun, and sky, and the white clouds
—the trees on the borders, and the flecked
rocks that line their hanks. I have gone
to them at night to see the stars anil the
moon, and the dark blue mystery of the
firmament when the brightness of its ceru
lean gleam as it glistens at noonday was
tempered and shaded to a sober and more
grateful tone. And in these pools—these
great pierglass mirrors of nature —leaning
over the sides ofmy boat, I have seen the
world and the sky stand out with splendor,
a beauty, a suggestiveness of appearance,
that the open vision of the day could not
bring me.
The New Testament is such a pool, in the
spiritual world, friends. The great moun
tain-like truths of God’s being and conduct,
the evergreen growths of his daily provi
dences ; the sober but ma jestic fulfillments
of the old prophecies; the star-like facts
of life ; the blue dome of the destiny of
the race ; yea. and the cloud-like passages
of his eternal decrees, lifted h igh above hu
man analysis, moved on by invisible cur
rents of 11 is ordering—all these nre reflect
ed from the pure depths of the teachings of
Jesus. Anil all these you can see, I can
see, nil men ran see, if they will hut con
template with earnest, prayerful, soul
seeking vision the Sayings of the Son of
Man. — B\ 11. 11. Murray.

Jolin Henry was with Julia the other
evening when she observed :
“ John, dear, what is nil this talk about
contracting and expanding the currency,
and which do you believe in?”
“Well, my sweet,” said John, pulling
up his collar, “ that depends upon circum
stances. In some cases I should advocate
contraction of the currency, and in others
an expansion of it. It is according to the
circumstances—that is, the condition of
things.”
“ But what is the difference between the
two. and how do circumstances affect
them? That’s what I want to know,
John.”
“Oh, that’s easily explained,” said
John, in a tone of great cheerfulness.
“ For instance, when we are alone we sit
on one chair, don’t we ?”
“ Yes.”
“Well, that’s contraction. But when
we hear your pa or ma coming we get on
two chairs, don't we?”
“ 1 should say we did’”
“Well, my love, that is expansion. So
you see that it is according to circum
stances.”
“ John,” said she, very softly, burrow
ing under his left ear, “ we are contracting
now, ain’t we?”
y You bet!” said John with increased
cheerfulness.

The New York Journal of Commerce be
stows deserved praise upon the orderly
and law-obeying conduct of the Southern
workingmen during the recent strikes, It
says: “It is true that the cities of the
South aro not as crowded as those of the
North with men who cunnot get work, nr
tramps or dissatisfied laborers. But the ■
real reason for the quiet of the South when
all the other parts of the country were
overrun by mobs was the peaceful dispo
sition of her people. That they went
through all that week of crisis and kept
the peace in Kiehmond, Charleston, Savan
nah, Mobile. New Orleans, and other large
cities of the South, where there were few
regular volunteer soldiers on hand to keep
i order, is a test proof of their willingness to
