Marital. Mirricdi on the Iffth inst., at tho resi dence of the bride’s father in Elbert county, by the Rev. W. P. Smith, Mr JOHN E. Chapman and Miss Alice Turner. K. J. Of that old land mark, the Athens Watchman is in town, and is a chip off the old block. With such a circulation as the Watchman has in Hart, he needs no in troduction from us. Chronicle A I'ointlllnllonalliit. This grand old paper, recognizing the value of printers’ ink, has its advertise ment in this issue, and we endorse every thing they say about themselves, and more too; as. with characteristic modesty, they leave the best unsaid. Cupt. Kicti. Of onr esteemed cotemporary the Athens Georgian is in town, and will no doubt add many names to his already large list in our County. The Captain is indeed a rich hearted fellow. Observe the man with the white hat on—that's the Captain. Death from n Rum. The infant son of Marion and Ann Check in this County died on the 2d instant, after ten days suffering from a burn. Mrs Cheek had walked out in the yard ami its clothing caught on fire and caused its death. It was about nine months old and an unusual ly intelligent and fine-looking child. The parents have our sincere sympathy. Two Jugs aml a Bottle. T. E. Vickery sent us last week two jugs and a bottle full of the clearest, sweetest sorghum we ever saw. This syrup was made on the new machinery purchased from E. B. Benson & Cos. We like such samples—a jug apiece for the editors and a bottle for the devil. Vagrant Them. There are a number of able-bodied black scoundrels who loaf about this town and live by hook or crook and have no visible means of support, who ought to be vagrant iedor Ku Kluxed. We have not a single white loafer cither in the town or County, and fully half the negroes live, nobody knows how. Fora number of years they lived on credit, but like some lazy, trifling white folks, their credit has played out. Whiskey tobacco and castor oil don't grow on the bushes. The Savannah News. Tins excellent paper is determined to keep up its good name among the.great papers of the day, and with commendable enterprise offered prizes for the two best stories for publication in the weekly, of SIOO and SSO. The “ Marable Family,” written by S. G. Hiller, jr., of Cuthbcrt, Ga., received the first prize; and “ llenr}’ Sinclair; or the Doctor’s Revenge,” by P. A. Ryan, of Middle Ground, Screven County, Ga., the second. The publication of the first will commence in the Weekly News of to-day. Subscribe for it. Arson. On Thursday night last, at 111 o'clock. Mr. P. S. Norman was aroused by the cries of a colored woman living in a house ! on his place, and when he got there found the house ablaze in four different places and the flames raging in the doors so as to pre- 1 vent the woman and her child from escap ing. After considerable exertion, the fire was extinguished before material damage was done. It was the premeditated work of an incendiary, as wood and brush was found systematically piled at the different points and ignited. No clue to the perpe trators. Court. The Superior Court of our County met on Monday morning, Ilis Honor Judge Pottle presiding, and Solicitor General Reese at his post. The following visiting lawyers in attend ance : E. P. Edwards, J. P. Shannon, Robt. Hester. J. T. Osborn, Elberton; J. D. Mathews, Lexington. S. V. Drown. Foreman Grand Jury. Judge Pottle's charge to the Grand Jury was very able and full of interest. Jn Judge Pottle we have an officer in! whom the people of this circuit may be proud ; for we do not hesitate in saying he is the best Judge we have ever had in this j County. His crown officer, Mr. Reese, is a fine lawyer, and at Elberton last week he con victed or gained every case for the State, some of which were ably defended. On Monday there was only one case | tried, Shirley vs. Caldwell—ejectment. This was a suit for the recovery of thirty eight acres of land, which was gained at last September term by Shirley, but anew trial was ordered, and this time it went for Caldwell. Yesterday forenoon the case of R. B. Thornton t\s. AY. M. Brown—Garnishee. Appeal from Justice Court 111S D. G. M., tried and verdict upon illegality, and exe cution found to be traveling illegally upon the ground baliff had made no entry of personal property, and therefore went for plaintiff. Skelton toombstone case continued by, plaintiff. Nun The Anderson Fair comes off on the 24th 25th, and 28th of October. Bids for futures at the jail windows have been quite lively for the past week. If you want a first-class job of painting done, at low figures, call on Fletcher Kav. Miss Lou Ilazlet, a charming eitiaeness of Elberton, honors our town with her presence ’Squire McCnrry's buggy shines like a streak of sunshine, since J. M. Presnell painted and overhauled it. Wc learn that two white men joined the New Sardis colored Baptist Church last week. We pity the Church. The Association at Sardis commences next Friday. A large crowd is anticipa ted. including friends from Carolina. Wc shan't refuse cash on subscriptions ihie from this on till first January next. Don't he afraid to hand it in. We won't get mad. W. V. Vickery says he has eaten one hundred and two chicken gizzards this season. That accounts for his being so pretty. We are authorized to state that all sing ing schools, choirs, Ac., are invited to at tend the Association at Sardis, and join in the singing exercises. Bethesda School closed Thursday, and Sol is now doing his best to revictual the hungry lawyers in attendance on Court and Turkey is meeting with heavy loss. Hon. E. R. White sent us a large jug of sorghum of the best quality from bis mill. It is good enough to sweeten coffee, especially for those who like long sweeten ing. Big Bill Holland has returned from the Springs very much recovered, although he says he is not in the flesh—that is not ns of yore. His clothes hang on him like a carpet on a clothes line. In another column will be found Jno. C.. McCurry Esq's card calling a meeting of Democrats at the Court House to day at 12 m. in reference to nominating candi dates for the Legislature. If you want your buggy painted well and look new, go to J. M. Presnell. Having been with the best painters for some time is prepared to do plain or fancy work in the best manner. Come and see. Jeff' Holland don't deny sowing powder for turnip seed, but states as his reason, that his son Tom shot all the turnip seed away, and be thought, if turnip seed made powder, powder would make turnip seed. A South Carolina man, who lias traveled all over bis State, says there is more hospi tality in Hart County than there is in the whole State of South Carolina. Perhaps lie did not own a hundred u niggers ” be fore the war. At a small cost you may add greatly to the appearance of your home by having chairs and other furniture painted and var nished. Fletcher Kav will do the job ex tremely low. with dispatch and in a most satisfactory manner. A large plank arbor. 20x40 feet, with a large brush arbor around it, with seats for 1.000 or 1.500 persons has been erected at Sardis, under the efficient supervision of ! Capt. Craft and P. M. Crow. Everybody should attend, and they will be made com fortable. Dn. llatiter's Liver Pills have been used by the public for many years, and never has an instance come to our knowl edge of their failing to relieve or restore to health the suffering sick when they have been thoroughly and faithfully used. Sold b} r E. B. Benson A Cos. A few years ago nearly every fifteen year old boy in Hart could take up an old fiddle and play “ Arkansaw Traveler,” “ Hell broke loose in Georgia” and kin dred tunes ; now most of those boys can offer up in public as fervent and eloquent prayers as any old veteran of the Cross. Young Ladies, beware of the injurious offects efface powders. All such remedies close up the pores of the skin, and in a short time destroy the complexion. If you would have a fresh, healthy and youthful appearance, use Du. Harter’s Iron Tonic, and Liver Pills. Sold by E. B. Benson & Cos. The reward offered by Citizens is genuine and will be paid promptly. We are sorry they insinuate that there might be church members in the scrape, for surely there are none so hypocritical and base in this County professing to be a follower of the blessed Savior, who could be guilty of such a crime. Rev. Dr. L. Pierce, of Sparta. Ga., says, I have been speechless two months and have been taking Thrash's consumptive cure nine days, and can talk with some ease. Call at your Drug Store and get a trial bottle for 50 cents. Large size 1 50. Rev. Mr. Hyde preached on Sunday in the M. E. Church. There are some Pres byterians in the County. Why they do not turn out is a mystery. The Methodist always turn out in full force. They are a Gospel-greedy set, and will preach and eat and drink with any Christians that will let 'em. Some say Mr. Hyde is a dry Hyde, but say what they may he is not a green one, and is a much superior preacher to nine-tenths of them through North Georgia of any denomination. During the threshing season, a travel ing thresher was passing a farm house, when a big dog rushed out at the wagons passing, and one of the hands jerked out a pitchfork from tho wagon and run it through the dog. Tho farmer came run ning out in nn excited manner and wanted to know why he had run his dog through. The man said he did it in self defence. The farmer said “ why did you not take ’totlicr end of the pitchfork ?” “ Because the dog did not come at me with ’tother end.” This amused the farmer, and they parted pleasantly. Rev. J. T. \V. Vernon, preached n most excellent sermon on Sunday night, from latter part of 14th verse 10th chapter of Genesis. Mr. Vernon had preached in the morning at Line Church, and just dropped injit prayer meeting at the M. E. Church, lie shoves the jack piano through the week and preaches better sermons on Sundays than most of the two-thousand dollar preachers could do. Wyatt McMullan, colored, living nt the Agnew Place, lias lost a steer. Has been gone about 8 weeks. Yellow and white spotted, wide horns, big head, and short legs. Wyatt is a crippled man and a good citizen. If anyone has heard of such a steer they will confer a favor upon a poor man by giving information at this office. Due More Siiulte Truth. Peter Murray, Sam Ilarbin. Mr. Holmes and the two Cooper boys went into the Cochran bottoms to haul up fodder after night. The weeds were waist high, and hearing a considerable rattling in them, knew the old familiar souad. and the men took the long pole that they were going to secure the fodder with and thrashed the weeds until the noise ceased, then went up to James Rice’s house to get a light. On returning found they had killed eleven large rattlesnakes. One had twentg-t/tree rattles and the end of the rattle-staff* was broken off', and they do not know bow many more were missing from tho gable end of said staff. Disgraceful. On last Sunday night, while most of our well disposed persons were attending Church, some rowdies were shooting pis tols. Two were fired from Linder's store piazza. It does look strange that the town council and marshal cannot put a stop to this outrageous practice. If a country boy comes into town and cuts up any di does he is taken up and punished. If a negro was to do such an act, every man in town would bo for flaying him alive. Let justice be done to all, no matter who is exposed. Bravery does not consist in shooting oft' pistols and scooting round a corner. Runaway M'rajie. Yesterday morning, just as Mr. N. J. Brown entered the square with a load of beef, one of his mules took fright and ran about fifty yards, when he broke out of harness. The other mule did not seem in clined to carry the foolishness any further, so stopped in time to save the cluster of buggies they were approaching. Had they gone any further the damage would have been great. The thanks of the community are extended to the other mule. Elbert ,Superior Court. This tribunal convened Monday of last week. The Grand Jury had for its fore man that able and good man, Rev. John 11. Grogan. The Court lasted the entire week, being occupied the greater portion of the time with criminal trials. The jail had eight inmates, seven of whom were con victed, and four of them were sent tc rein fore the crew of Grant, Alexander & Cos. ; Oscar Thornton alias Willis, convicted of burglary in the day time, a small negro boy of 111, was ably defended by Messrs. Mathews & Hodges. He was sentenced to the penitentiary for three years. His father belonged to Mr. Hodges and his 1 mother to Rev. B. Thornton. Another negro from our County was convicted of burglary in the night time, Peter Brewer. He was sentenced for seven years to the penitentiary. He is the son-in-law of our venerable colored brother. Rafe Gaines. The people of Elbert are kind, hospitable and clever, and seem to be overwhelmingly in favor of the new Constitution. AVe stopped at the Globe, where that enterprising gentleman, Dr. 11. C. Ed munds, cares for his guests in a style per fectly splendid. A sadness was thrown over the Court room during session, just as the Solicitor General had concluded one of his finest arguments. He received the sad announce ment of his mother’s death. He has the profound sympathy of all. + 850 Reward. AA T c will pay fifty dollars reward for proof sufficient to convict in the Superior Court, the parties who did the shooting around town last Sunday night. If the Council cannot protect citizens from the flying bullets of Sunday drunkards, we know Judge Dottle can and will do so even if one of the first families of Georgia, or member of the Church in good standing were one of the party. CITIZENS. A Court <u Tear*. I It is said that when Judge Pottle deliv ered his feeling and eloquent charge to the Grand Jury on Monday, that the eyes of nearly all the spectators were tilled with tears.
