New Artverlß*in*iit*. We call attention to the card of \\ in. L. Webb, wholesale dealer in crockery, glass ware, A'c., Charleston. S. C. 11 e take great pleasure in recommending him to our mercantile friends who do not know him already. Those who have dealt with him have but to be reminded of his many Stir ling qualities, his low prices and splendid stock, fie is a gentleman, and we hope our friends will mntmne to patronize lorn, ami that many orders wiM result Ir on this reminder. See card of U’m. F. Quincy, with 11. Tlischotf. Our merchants all know Quincy and appreciate him and the splendid house be represents. Biscboff in moat favorably known in this part of the moral vineyard as an honest, fair and square dealer. Me keeps tlie best goods anil sells remarkably low. Besides Wing a large dealer in gro ceries. provisions, etc.. Bischoff is some farmer, owns large landed esiates. and plants 800 acres in rice So when you buy tiiat article from him you get. from first hands. His store occupies over an acre of ground, embracing the old Farrar building. Freights are greatly reduced on his class of goods, and Charleston is now certainly the market. Mull & Scotney. Geperal Commission Merchants. Philadelphia, oiler fine induce ments to the producer, and their references show them to be reliable and trustworthy. T. J. Binder gives fair notice to his debt ors to come up and settle early this fall. Those who wish to buy from him on credit in the future had better settle at once. Debtors to the old firm of T. J. Binder A Cos., are warned that if they fail to settle in 30 days that their notes will be sued on. Sec legal advertisements. A Hint to Yoons Lawyer*. Twenty-five years a£<> an old bachelor ran away, owing an account of fifty dollars to one of our merchants. The merchant sent the claim to a young lawyer, with lit tle hope of ever getting anything on it. In less than a month, he was surprised at re ceiving a bright new fifty dollar bill in a letter from the lawyer. That young man succeeded in his profession, and has held the highest offices in the State, including ,Judge° of the Supreme Court. Now. il that merchant had sent that claim to many of the young lawyers, they would in all probability have handed it to a Justice of the Peace “for collection, and in six months would have had a bill of costs sent back for payment instead of bis money. A man that is faithful in small matters w ill do to trust in large ones, and is bound to prosper in his business. Stove-pipe bats, kid gloves and open-back shirts never made a great man. Honors Easy. Some years ago a hank broke. A man. ploughing in a field, beard the news, un hitched his horse, went to the house and opened his pocket-book to see if he had any of the bills, and finding he had none on that or any other bank, felt easy. On looking over our exchanges this week we find we have no quarrel to make with any of them, and we feel easy. It is our aim to be civil and gentlemanly with all. " e live among rough, plain people, and although our language may appear rather inelegant to the most refined, we mean no harm by it. There is one thing we don t (like —occasionally we dish up a pretty good prticle in our paper that is copied exten sively, without giving us credit. Of course •it is flattering to a little one-horse paper ,av out in the wilderness like ours, but ' it would be more so if they would only stick the little SUN to the bottom. Volunteer Potatoes. Some of our town folks covered their Irish potatoes in February with rotted sorghum stocks after one working, i hey used the potatoes until hot weather w hen the tops died down, now they are as green and luxuriant as in early spring, and we think the potatoes are much nicer than the first crop were. In this wav two gout crops have been made with only one work ing. This is certainly one of the easiest countries in the world in winch to make a living. With a small garden, good vegeta bles can be grown the year round, and two crops of almost everything except cotton can be made. All that is needed to make this country prosperous is economy ami industry. Hart County Elbrary Association. On Friday night week, the members of the Hartwell Literary Club organized a Li brary Association, to be called the Hart County Library Association, and its object is to promote the cause of literature and the general diffusion of learning in this County. The Association is to he confined to no particular place or section, but is in tended for the entire people, and members are solicited from all sections of our C ounty Any person will he enrolled as a member who will contribute to the Association a volume Thenameof the contributor w 1.l be printed on the fly leaf of the volume and P the books will he kept together, and will be read by those of the present day and our Dosterity. Quite a number of TTnrtwellites have gone to the State Fair, among them our senior. "Old IC,” which will account for our dullness. ThcTugalo Baptist Association will con- i vcncat Reed Creek Church on Friday next. . the 18th. 7 miles north of this place. Rev. Dr. Wilkes, of Gainesville, Ga., is expected to be there. Owing to our large and increasing sub scription list, we were forced to open a new mail hook last week, and in transfer ring to it one or twd offices were omitted. We regret this but will make up the loss. By last mail from Athens, we heard from our new press. It had reached Au gusta. and is now in Athens we suppose, i The larger paper has arrived and we hope soon to put it to use. Attention is called to the offer made by the National Silver-Plating Cos., 704 Chestnut St.. Philadelphia, in our columns. Their silver-ware is beautiful and fully up to the standard, and their generous offer is available to all the readers of this paper for ninety days after date y Jas. T. Adams brought into our office Monday a large beet—or beets—measuring 22 inches in circumference. It had five distinct tops and roots hut was consolida ted in the middle. It was of the white variety. A lady was sewing on a semi-circular piece of cloth in Hartwell the other day, when one of her little brothers asked : “Sistef. what is that?” “Oh, nothing,” was the reply—“ it's a lamp mat.” “ Oh, yes,” quoth “he. that’s to put around the lamp's neck to keep it from slobbering !” Fire alarm. You see, this is the way it happened : Mr. Kay was coming down the street, and looking over at W. R. Stephen son's house, saw some smoke, and pranc ing round rapidly found the fire burning rapidly, destroying everything in reach, and the smoke just booming out—the stove-pipe on the other side of the house. Moral—Always come up on the stove-pipe side. One of our young men sent his sweet heart a geranium last week in a worm j candy box with the label still exposed. No harm was intended hut the young lady has concluded that she can in no way counte nance any man afflicted in this way.—A6- beville Medium. Ah, you know too much Hemphill. Did the young lady inform you of this, or were you the donor ? On last Monday evening, while the sil- j ver moonlight was gorgeously lighting up every landscape, and A. G. McCurry, Esq., had just commenced perusing Lossing’s •• other side ” of the civil conflict, in fancied security, rich strains of melody were wafted in the breezes, sweeter far than Memnonian echoes. It was the Hart well String Band, come to serenade him in honor of his election on Saturday last. After several pieces were beautifully ren dered, and calls for a speech. McCurry ad vanced to the portico and delivered a short address and invited the serenaders into the parlor to partake of refreshments. At length when music and refreshments were to some extent exhausted, the crowd dis persed. hoping to give a “bigger ” serenade after the election on the first W ednesday in December next. Found Dead. We learn that Dr. M. V. Guriev, of Franklin county, was found dead in his room at 4 o’clock p. m. on Monday last. Cause, an over dose of morphine. \N edo not know whether it was intentional or not.
