Lemonade and cake disappeared in large

Forty years ago, we were stopping at a
boarding house in Charleston. In the par
lor several of the lady hoarders were talk
ing of an old maiden lady who had died—a
Jewess. The parties all agreed she was
one of the best women in the world. Her
whole life had been spent in visiting and
alleviating the sufferings of the sick and
poor. One lady held her hands tip in holy
horror and exclaimed —“ Oh. what a pity
such a woman should be lost!” We were
hut a boy then, but well remember think
ing that wo had much rather risk lUc
chances of the departed Jewess for a safe
arrival on the “ shining shore " than those
of a biggot.
We have known men to abuse a neighbor
for a villian and want him driven from the
country, when he honestly differed from
them in politics, and these same men pre
tend to be proud of a country that is called
the land of the free and home of the brave,
but all the freedom and bravery must ex
actly suit their notions.
Opinions*.
Wc arc told some of our patrons a,rc
displeased with the letter from hell in our
last issue, and appear to think old “D.”
wrote it. This is a mistake. He know noth
ing of it. Our columns arc open to all
CTceiks and denominations of Christians,
also to the damned, if they want to air
their opinions and experiences in any way
that will benefit the morals and honesty of
the people. We admit no articles where a
party wants to slander or tell lies on a
neighbor for personal revenge. If any of
our readers feel grieved with the letter re
ferred to, the}' must knock at the door of
hell (or satisfaction. This complaint re
iniuds tut of the rendition of the Scriptures
by an old preacher thus: “And they
strained at a gate and swallowed a saw
mill,'’ and of another one who got up in
the pulpit, looking very wise, and said :
My breethrin, l never thought it wrong
to let our children play marbles until I
found this Scripture pintedly agin it.
* Marvel not that I said unto you.’ Now.
hat is plain to everybody that you must
not play marbles at all.”

On last Friday morning, our community
was pained with the nc\v,s of the sudden
death of Rev. Van !>. Cary, an old cit
izen of our County. Ilis decease was very
sudden, lie arose on that morning very
early—an hour or so before day—and built
a lire in his room, and told his daughter
that bethought of going to have his picture
taken that day. lie soon complained of
feeling unwell and returned to bed, and in
the short space of not more than an hour
breathed his last. lie was a very fleshy
man, and was troubled with a disease of
the heart, and it is supposed it was that
dread disease that-affected him and caused
hi.s demise.
The subject of this sketch was horn in
Newberry District, .South Carolina on the
2!)th September. 18'X>, and from an humble
beginning he arose to his prominent posi
tion, being one of the most influential of
our citizens, lie was raised in Pendleton
District, South Carolina, having hern
hound to Mr. John Contry, of that Dis
trict, until about the year 1823, when he
came to Georgia. On the 10th of Febru
ary, 1820, he was married to Miss Frances
L. Dooly, daughter of Wiliam Dooly, Esq,,
of old Filbert, now Hart County, and was
married at the same house in which he died,
which was then the property of his father
in-law. This homestead was settled in the
year 1812, and Mr. Gary's wife was born
there, ami lived there all her life, with the
exception of 10 years. Mr. Gary has been
living there for 43 years. They raised a
family of 10 children —5 girls and 5 boys;
of whom 8 arc now living. Mr. Cary be
came a member of the Methodist Church
about the year 1831, and was licensed to
preach Nov. 27th, 1817, in tlfc Rilckersville
circuit, and lias been an active worker in
the Church ever since, lie was not in
charge of any particular CbdrCh for some
time before hi.s death, owing to hi.s de
clining health.
Ilis wife died the 23d of May of the pres
ent year. She was born in the year 1811,
and was a consistent member of the same
Church ever since soon after their marriage.
Although infirm in her later life, her faith
in the Lord was strong.
A good man has gone, and his loss will

The Ogldhrope Echo commenting on
Mr. Davis’ Photograph triumph at th* fair,
where he secured Jive first pmm inns over
all competition, has this to say, and we
commend the advice to all onr people,
having this to oddi that if you want oval or
square frames for Photographs, etc., the
proper place to get theirt is Davis’Premi
um Gallery at Athens.
F. knows that the best place in
Georgia to get an elegant picture of oneself
is Daiis' Gallery in Athens; and now that
times are easy, wc would advise our people
to ornament their homes with photographs
of their family—pictures that will prove to
he “joys forever,” instead of wasting their
money on trashy eugravings, ami the like.
Remember delays are dangerous. Don't
wait till sickness lays some loved one of tho
family at death’s gale, and then think of
" what you might have been ;” hut take a
day tor it, and with your family go to
Davis’ Gallery, and be photographed.
7'oil'll he glad when you have done it. and
find money and tho littl© time well spent.

Accident.
On the evening of the 7th inst., Mr. C.

ing to a cotton gin, was cleaning the seed
away ; his arm came in contact with the
gin saws, and was badly cut and mangled,
fn*m above the elbow to the ends of the
fingers. Dr. Sorrell was called in, and
amputated the middle finger at the middle
joint, and the forefinger a--little nearer the
end. the bones of the lingers having been
cut in twain, by the gin saws. He dress
ed the lingers and arm, and the whole
wound seems to he doing well.
Also, we lcai - )! that Mr. Starke of this

amputated above the elbow. We hope it
is not so bad. We would simply remark
