A St range Story. Maryland letter Thirty-throe years ngo a family nntncil Renton, consisting of lather, mother, son ami daughter, resided in one of the West ern States near n small town railed Rlank. Tho father was wealthy and lived in style, and his daughter Mabel, a child between two and three years of age, was always elegantly dressed, nnd George, the son, a boy of seven, was prepared to enter nn Eastern school. One day littlo Mabel dis appeared, and her parents never heard of her again, although they spent thousands of dollars in searching for her. The henrt brohen mother died soon afte r tho loss of her darling, and the father wandered over this country nnd Europe, and finally set tled in New York, where he Jdied. Ucorge grew to manhood, and the memory of his lost sister wns almost effaced from his mind. In his twenty-seventh year while visiting a married friend, he fell m love with the governess of his friend's children, a beautiful girl of about twenty-three, and after sonic months they were married and lived happily for live or six years, a boy and girl being born unto them during that time. Ry the death of an uncle in San Irineisco tieorge was left a considerable fortune, and the lawyer who conveyed the intelli gence to him also stated that his sister s career had been traced. A tramp on his death-bed in a St. Louis police-station con fessed that lie and two companions had stolen little Mabel Renton for her clothes and a locket which she wore, nnd that she had continued with them for several years, when her bright, pretty lace attracted tin attention I|f# kind-hearted lady in Ohio, who adopted her and sent her to school, where she remained until her patroness died, Mabel then became a teacher in n large school in Cincinnati, hut as her health began to fail she applied for a posi tion as governess, and was now in the fam ily of .Mr. M., or at least that was the last place lie had heard of her being in. “ What was the name of the family she was with f” ask ml Ucorge. •• M ,” was the answer. “ What name did my sister have?” “ Mabel Ferris.” •‘My Cod!” cried George, in agony, “ She has been my wife for live years.” Upon further investigation this proved to he tiie truth, ami the girl nearly went crazy as she was a devout Kpiscopnlian. A separation ensued, nil property being equally divided. Tho children were placed with friends as neither parent could bear the sight of what was to them the fruit ol a crime against God and man. The poor grl is still living in a quiet city in New Kugland, while the husband and brother, alter spending all his property save a few hundred dollars in dissipation, shut him self oil'from nil communication with his friends, and is to-day a poor farmi r in the county of Garrett, among strangers, nnd where few know his sadly remarkable story. Wonderful Irish Lobsters. Jlnstun Commercial Hull till. One of our restaurants boasts of an Irisli Munchausen who acts in the humble ca pacity of waitur, and adds much to the en tertainment of quests. One of them being served with a small lobster, asked ; “Do you call that a lobster, Mike?’’ “Faix, I believe they do be callin’ thim lobsters, here sur. We call cm crabs, at liotnc." “ Oh." said the diner, " You have lob sters in Ireland;'" “Is it lobsters? l!e --gorrn, thececksis full of'em. Many a time have 1 seen 'em whin I’ve lepped slitratnes.” “ I low large do the lobsters grow in Ireland?" “Well," said Mike, thoughtfully, "to schpake widin bounds, snrr. I'd say a matter of five or six feet." “ What ! live or six foot; how do they ge! around in those creeks?" “ ltedad, snr. the creeks in Ireland are fifty or sixty feet wide," said the unabashed Mike. “ lint," said the persistent inquirer, “you said you had seen them when you were leaping over the s'reams, and lobster hero live in the sea." “ Deed, I did, snr ; we've powerful lcapers in Ireland. As fortlie say, sur I’ve seen it red wid ’em.” “ Hut look here my tine fellow,” said the guest, thinking he had cornered the Hibernian at Inst, “lobsters are not red until they are boiled.’’ “ Doan't 1 know that?" said Mike, reproachfully, “but there are Idlin' springs in the ouhl country, an’ they schwitn troo ’em an’ come out ready for you to crack open and ate,"and Mike walked calmly oil to wait on the next guest, leaving bis interloctor to di gest the lobster, and the story. Old Mr. Meriden bad been married forty-three years when bis wife died, last week, lie didn’t appear to miss her very much until bed time, when he sat down and stuck out bis foot for somebody to come and pull olf bis boot. And then when his son-in-law coldly handed him the Aboot-jack, the full weight of the irre arable loss he had sustained broke upon •lie old man and he gave way to a Hood of tears. As for the boot-jack, it had been so long since lie bad seen one, ho didn't know how to use it. — Hawk-Eye. ( barley Ross’ father, in his vain search for the stolen boy, bus spent i?W.OX), bis entire fortune, and is now a travelling sales man for an Eastern lionac. lie lias made #OO journeys in search of bis lost child, and says he shall persevere until it is found or he dies himself. A few weeks ngo the quartermaster ; r enoral of the Turkish sirrny issued ra tions of soap to nil the regiments in the tinny of the faithful. The astonished warriors took it. looked at it. felt it. wondered what it was for and finally made oup of it. —JLncii i,<\ “ How nicely thin corn ob served he, us they sat eating it together by the fire. “ Yes,” replied she, holding down her head, •• it's got over being green." Of course he couldn't stand such an inference as that, nnd might soon have been seen “popping” himself, nnd watching the glad light, in her eyes ns she blusltingly said, “do ask pop!’ TUT'PSJ’ILU A Noted Divine says They are worth their weight in gold.
