THE Si: N. HMTWEUU lIAKT '• KTY. W*.i n (MlnvK-lny. ><■• uilmt 11*. >77. RUMOR OF WA*. Indications are favorable for anotVr war w ith the Mexicnas. The depredation* on the Texas border* continuo and the U. S. authorities have expostulated with the Greaxer* until forbearance ceaseth to boa virtue. Remember the Alamo! PLEVNA GOBBLED Ll*. Tho veteran Russian engineer Todlebon, lias enabled the Russians to capture Plevna and about 40,000 Turk*. Osman Pasha fought nobly and was slightly wounded. The Otar returned to him his sword on account of his bravery. The Turks are still determined to carry the ptruggle to the bitter end. CHRISTMAS. This is the last issue ofTm-: Sun before Christmas, and as printers like their holi day* as well as anybody, we will issue only an advertising sheet next Wednesday. It used to be that Christina* seemed to be a long ways oil’, but as the years creep on it seems as if the sacred day comes ahead of time. Last Christmas was quite lively in Hartwell, but present appearances indi cate that it will be more in keeping w ith the birth-day of our Savior. We take oc casion here to wish our patrons “ A merry Christmas and happy New Year.” The Hartwell Suit hath a nice little crowing hen trying to puss for a full blooded rooster. — Toccoq Jit raid. “ Was it for Crymet we have done." The Herald says our rooster ain't one? Candor compels us to admit. • In case we found an egg under hit, Hut w ould you not like a hen That'ud lay a Senatorial egg now and it,set. The above is poetry. Alexander 11. Stephens gained four pounds last month, nuu vet lie wears an chors on his feet to hold himself down.— Hawk rye. If it wasn't for the Hawk-eye man’s feet his head would have carried him up to the happy hunting grounds long ago. A Perplexing Point. A legal writer in flu* Macon Telegraph and Messenger makes the point if Governor Golqoitt dies between this time and next November there will be no legal govern ment in Georgia and a state of anarchy will ensue, lie takes the position that the now Constitution goes into effect from the time that flie Governor issues his nroela mation declaring that it has been adopted. The Constitution kills the qld Legislature and as the new Legislature will not meet and organize until November there is no President of the Senate or Speaker of the House to take tfie place of the Governor in the event of his death or resignation nor is there any person authorized, in such a contingency, to call the General Assembly together in special session. It is not proba ble our Governor will either die or resign during tho next eleven months, hut either death or resignation might occur and pro duce a very ugly political complication. It is a matter of regret that the mischief was not foreseen in time for its prevootion. A Good Fellow, Now that the election is over, let us lay aside all bitlur disputes, go to work like pood fellows and in every respect do the best we can. — Tocroa Herald. Died on the evening; of the 21st of Nov., at the old King place, in Elbert county. Colonel Gaines Thompson. aged 9;!. lie was a Captain in the ar of 1812. Tho Atlanta Constitution says : “Some of our citizens are already discussing whereabouts in the nark the capital ought to be built, and which way it ought to front. For the first time since the war Glynn county has elected a Democratic member of the Legislature. James Mine, colored, has represented that county since IStW. and was the oldest member of the last House. Augusta has increased in population du ring the past year by fifteen hundred. She has also advanced steadily in the de velopment of her industrial enterprise, and now ranks among tho first manufacturing cities of tho South. The division of California into two dif ferent Slates is again under discussion. The people ill the lower part of the State want a capital oT their own and a govern ment of their own, and they would locate lxvth in Isis Angeles. I loth of the Son Francisco newspapers are opposed to it. Dick's letter in the Hartwell Sr.v some works ago. written from a region, where hot is no name for the heat, was replied to by morality, and now Dick writes again m the Srn and from this circumstance alone, we presume that the desired mail route has been established.— Tocroa If-raid. Editors Sun : There is nut a temper ance organisation of any kind in the Coun ty, and it is said some of (lie cleverest, best-hearted men among us are killing themselves drinking whiskey. Can nothing be done to help these men, to encourage them, and stop them in their inad career Wc think a society, or rather a pledge could be gotten up that might save some of them from a drunkard's grave. Let them sign a pledge to abstain from anv kind of intoxicating drinks for 12 months from the date they sign, and at the end of the 12 mouths they can sign again. Very few af ter the first year would ever go back, and if they did, !2 months of peace and quiet to their families would well repay the ef fort to save them. There are men who spend from one hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars a year for strong drink, whose families scarcely have the necessa ries of life. The amount of money worse kthan thrown away by liquor would pay V their debts and make their homes happy and comfortable. Is there no good solxr ministers of the gospel who will take this thjng in hand and try to reclaim the poor drunkard, and check the driuking of church members who are on the broad road to a drunkard's heßf [ A (Strangely Shaped Potato! Mr. David 0. Partain has raised a yam potato thi* year of very singular *hapo. There arc four distinct parts, yet it im all one potato. It resembles a picked fowl by holding it in one way. Looking at it from another stand point, it resembles the aw oi len head of the rattle-snake and the king snake wrapped around it. Even the rattles of the rattle-snake are visible. Holding it another way, it appears like tha ears and horns of the Angora Goat. From na ture we may learn some useful lessons. While viewing this potato, we thought of the youth of the country, wrhose morals are being choked to dean's by drunkenness and vice. We thought of the many crops which we see every year, pretty well choked by grass and weeds. Also, of the honest men who are, praiseworthily, trying to make h decent living; but whose noses are kept to the grindstone by unprincipled men, who are choking their honest dues out of them by fraud, lies, and taking the homestead. We thought of officers who will set justice aside ami give wrong decisions in favor of a personal timid, thereby choking honcst ly-eurm'd money out of those to whom it is due. We thought of the many widows and orphans who have had all comfort choked out of them by those whom they had confidence in as being their best friends. The hypocrite also, can look like a picked fowl, a pile of writhing snakes, or an Angora Goat, whichever suits his con venience. We thank Mr. J’artain for send ing us the potato ; for it lias suggested thoughts, we hope, may do u good, if no one else is benefitted. Good luck, and pleasant dreams to you, David. Tom. \\ II() or.
