A “ Slick ” Scoundrel. On Friday last a man, calling himself G viflin. with a letter of recommendation fi4>m a Carolina merchant to one of the proprietors of Thu .Sun, came into this of fice, and said that he had got into a diffi ,ilty with a man in Edgefield, S. C., whom he had wounded, and that his brother-in law, Ex-Governor Bonham, and General Gary, his law partners, had advised him to make himself “ scarce ” for a while, un til the wounded man should recover. He , was quite an intelligent scamp and kseeincd perfectly acquainted with the best people of Anderson, Abbeville and Edge field, and said that he was a cousin of John 'Whitfield Esq., of Anderson. Owing to his letter of recommendation and his fine address, he was kindly treated by our hos pitable people, until Monday morning, when three gentlemen from Carolina came over in quest of Ex-Gov. Bonham’s broth er-in-law, and succeeded iu arresting him under the charge of stealing a mule. We hope he will he confined in the penitentiary at hard labor for twenty years for gulling us so badly. The next relation of ex-Gov. Bonham's that comes this way must have tfust about ten letters of recommendation and the seal of the State affixed to enlist our tender sympathies. Deaths. W<e tender our sincere sympathies to the bereaved family. His remains were interred in the Hartwell Cemetery on Fri day evening. lion. J. W. Jones departed this life on Tuesday night last, after a lingering illness of some months. He was buried at the Hartwell Cemetery on last Thursday by the Masonic Fraternity. Mr. Jones repre sented this County ;n the Legislature, was an honorable, upright, honest gentleman, beloved by all who knew him; one of the best neighbors, a true friend, an att'ection- Ute father, a model farmer and enterprising (Citizen. Was not a member of any church, if anything that goes to make a good member of society in this world is worth anything in the next, he will be among the blessed. Peace to his ashes; and would that all classes would emulate his many virtues. Kinging School. Mr. James E. Vickery commenced a singing school at Cross Roads Church Tuesday week, which closed on Sunday. He had a large class, and they were so well pleased that they made up another class at once, which he will commence teaching next Wednesday, lie is a good teacher. DAVIS’ PREMIUM GALLERY. J. 11. for his appreciative lines to Tiie Sun. but risk the hope that the sunshine in his heart and household may ever be as bright as his poem. Those indebted to J. AV. Ayers & Son are requested to make settlement with Tlios. A r . Skelton, agent, by the 25th of December, as a change in the business is contemplated. Accounts and notes un settled will at that date be placed in the hands of an officer. H- Nothing can he fairer than Mr. Daniel F. Beatty's mode of doing business, which evinces his confidence in the superiority ot his instruments over all others, lie war rants his Pianos and Organs for six years, gives from five to fifteen day's test trial, and refunds money if the purchaser is not satisfied. By this means his instruments are brought into competition with others, and invariably come out victorious. Ad dress all communications to F. Beatty, Washington. Warren County. New Jersey. See his advertisement. 65-116 It is a fact well established by unques tionable testimony that Hall’s Hair Re newer renews, cleanses, brightens, invigo rates and restores to its original color and lustre, faded gray or discolored hair, cheap ly, quickly and surely. The poorest peo ple prefer to buy it and use it. rather than to proclaim in a manner more forcible than words can delineate, through blanched locks or grizzly beard, that they are aged and passing to decay. A short trial will convince the most sceptical that it does eradicate the scalp diseases which rob the hair of its color and life.— Fort Scott (Kan.) Daily Monitor. Subscribers Hi Eklc (irove, Forl‘s Store mid AmiuKlnville. Dear friends, as we before said we would gladly send your papers to your dbors if we could afford it. We could not hire a inah to carry the mail to three offices for what the whole subscription pays us. Can you not arrange to get your mail regular ly by hand each week ? Other neighbor hood's in the County do so, on the co-ope rative plan, and never fail to read their pa pers on day of publication. The subscri bers arrange their plan between them selves and to their own satisfaction. Sup pose A. takes it upon himself to come to Hartwell this week on Wednesday, B. next week, C. the next, D, the next, and so on through the list; then let A. come again. In this way neither one would have to come more than three or four times during the year. If one should find it inconvenient to come his week, it might suit his neighbor to exchange times with him. The Ford's Store package could be sent every Wed nesday to Mrs. Holbrook’s on the road to Toccoa, not further than four miles from any of the Ford’s Store subscribers. Please try the plan and we think it will cause you very little trouble. We would like to have an agent at each of the above offices and will pay him to get us subscribers and see that the papers reach the offices regu larly. Ifernton Mge IS9 A. - . F.‘. .Vl.*. Rose to the head of the list of merchants in that city, but it being 100 small for him, he went to Charleston, and is now the most wealthy anil influential merchant in the Southern Stales. Philomatuean Wai.tz. —Professor Magill places on our table bis maiden effort in the composition of Music, with the above 'euphonious title, which our music teachers say •• is very pretty —prettier than the ef forts of most musical composers.” AVe have heard it executed on the piano, and we add our testimony that it is very pret ty'. We knew that our young friend had for years been paying special attention to music, hut the appearance of the Pliiloma tliean Waltz took us by surprise, the au thor had kept it so quiet. The author is a son of our town, is a graduate of the last class in Erskine College, and we congratu late him and his Alma Mater upon his suc cess in his effort as a musical composer. It foretokens a brilliant future for its author, if he will cultivate his talent,— Associate lie formed Presbyterian. Aiu't It Funny 7 On last sah'day. the old jail was sold; then the lot on which it stood. “ Old B.” bought the lot, and the Town Council had erected a neat calaboose on it which was not reserved when the lot was sold. “ Old B.” lias rented it out for a confectionary, A few days ago Marshal Dooley was seen crossing the Public .Square with his hands full of halter chains. On being interro gated, said Christinas was coming and the Town had no calaboose, and lie had bought the lot of chains to halter the boys to the blackjack saplings in the rear of the new jail. We really think the Council ought to have bought an umbaclla to go with each chain, as it would be mighty lonesome for a fellow to stand all night chained to a sapling without any covering from the piti less storms of December. Dear Son : You gave a complimentry little notice in your paper of Professor Looney's entertainment Friday night, 7th instant, but I see you failed (through modesty I presume) to mention one char acter which I think deserves special notice. 1 refer to the piece Over the Hill to the Poorhouse,” rendered by J. 11. McGill. Esq., in the most allecting maimer. His singing cannot be surpassed. Very few recognized him, and a majority of the ar diencc thought he really was an old man. The charade “ Cinderilla,” was well acted, and every one connected with the play did well. The “ Dancing Dutchman ” was very* amusing, and brought down the houstf The vocal and instrumental music by the young ladies and little girls was splendid. Prof, and Mrs Looney deserve much praise for the pleasure of the entertainment. D. tichool Trustees, As the election for anew Town Council takes place Boon, we would respectfully suggest to the citizens of Hartwell that at the same time an election bo held for Trustees of our School, Five years ago an election was hold, at which time the pres ent incumbents were elected, who have held a long time and have faithfully dis charged their trust; but it is no more than lair that they should be relieved, if they so desire. It is important that an election be held that the organization of the School maybe better perfected, by making appli cation and obtaining chartered powers, and the whole work thereby go forward in a systematic manner, which will bo to the good of the whole community. The election could be ordered either by the present Trustees, or by the town counsel. S.
