<)l'R WASHINGTON UTTER.
Washington, D. C., Jan. 15, 1879.
legislative business has been much in
terrupted since Congress the
7th. by the funeral services in cases of rep
resentatives Hart ridge and Scleicher. Yes
terday, in the Senate. Mr. Davis, of West
Virginia, spoke upon his resolution direct
ing the Committeo’on Agriculture to con
sider generally the subject of agriculture.
Davis gave us a vast amount of important
and interesting information concerning the
resources of ttic country, more especially
in his own Sta'e. ,
( Yesterday’s session of the House was
taken up in the discussion of the bill to
pensiou soldiers of the Mexican War. The
Democrats fought for the bill and the Re
publicans against it. of course. It is be
lieved that the bill will pass this session.
There was nothing else of interest in the
proceedings of the House yesterday.
Though formal action will not be taken
before Monday next, it is certain that the
“cipher telegrams” will bo thoroughly
investigated by Mr. Potter’s Committee.
They ought to be. It is not alone a ques
tion of doing justice to Mr. Tildcn, but
of ascertaining What truth there may he in
the most remarkable charges ever made in
our politics, and of settling finally the re
sponsibility for the despatches.
So manifest is itV.fht the Burnside Army
bill cannot pass, that another has been
prepared, embracing some of the provis
ions of the Burnside bill and oqiitting those
which were most distasteful. ‘However, it
is not believed either of them will receive
filial action at this session.
The Baltimore Sun says many people
have called at the White House—especial
ly from the South, who wish Mr. Ilayos to
accept apothcr nomination for the‘Presi
dency. ,'Ainl yet the Sun is not reckoned
one of the “ funny papers "of the country.
Yesterday Sidney tMarkc ‘was elected
speaker of the'Kansas House of Represen
tatives. The election is significant, as
Clarke hasTlcCn and is'iShc of the most ac
tive opponents of the re-election of Senator
Ingalls. Now if the Wisconsin Legislature
will give us a like indication that‘llowc is
to he beaten we shall have some hope of
the great and growing North-western states
getting out of the old ruts and securing
representation somewhat fitted to their
needs and deserts.
The advocates of woman sulfYage came,
spoke and have gone. They hail rather less
attention from Congress than on previous
occasions. At a visit to the White House
they were well received by Mrs. Hayes,
and Mr. Hayes apologized for not devoting
a part of his annual message to the inter
ests of woman and promised to give the
subject consideration.

tp Thomson one of the most re

It is a calf, about one month old, well
grown and apparently strong and healthy
lor an animal so young. But the head is
the curiosity. The upper jaw is split, or
ratlier divided in the shape of a horse shoe
nearly up to the eVes. the sides forming a
kind of fork, and extending 'on each side
and far below the under jaw. To each
prong of this fork there is a single, but
natural and well-developed nostril. There
is no bone in the middle of this fork, hut
instead there is a ball or hump of soft mus
cles. covered with long haif, beyond which
the lower jaw extends several inches, ex
posing the teeth and a considerable poition
of the tongue. The eyes arc set squarely
in the side of the head, and ran scarcely be
seen by one standing immediately in Iront
of t- e animal. Having no upper jaw the
calf, of course, is unable to chew its food,
but subsists entirely on milk fed from a
bottle, of which it is very fond and drinks
heartily.

llustcration in regard to the carriers of the
mail Votifc from here to Eagle Grove,
Amandnville. Ac., on to Klbcrton and the
daily route to Hartwell than you have any
idea of. ‘Ndt levs than two dozen good
farmers'An ve abandoned their farms and
come here to the station dny after day ex
pecting to get the contract to carry these
mails,'and all the questions and confusion
they give would overcharge Schaefer's new
warehouse. v l hc postmaster requests us
to state that he will close the post-office
door while the mail is being distributed,
ami that all suggestions and orders as to
how lo run a post-office will be regarded
ns impertinence. As soon ns the contracts
arc kiiown it will be published. It is
unlawful for outsiders to intrude them
selves behind the postmaster's counter and
persist in 'reading other people's letters
and papers. This will be enforced.

the truth.
