SLANDERS REFUTED.
There is no public character before the
people of this country more distinguished
for purity, spotless integrity and conserv
ative statesmanship than that of the gal
lant Christian, soldier and statesman Sena
tor John B. Gordon. We are proud that
we had the honor and pleasure of recording
our vote in the General Assembly in fuvor
of his re-election to the honorable position
which he now fills with so much credit to
himself, and so much pride and gratifica
tion to his State. And the only regret is
that we did not have a million of votes to
cast for him instead of one.
It would seem that a character so pure
and so noble, would be free from the shafts
of malice and poisonous miasms of envy.
But for some lime past an cflort has been
made by the enemies of Senator Gordon
to defame his fair character. Being too far
beneath Senator Gordon in public favor,
they seek with pop-guns to destroy an
honored character.
The manly conduct of Senator Gordon in
responding to the request of his fellow-cit
izens in the Seventh District, and in stand
ing true to Democratic duty, caused quite
an ebullition of feeling on the part of the
Feltonites in that District. Since that time
the “honors of Ganymede caught up to
the skies have remained deeply ireasured
up,” and every plan has been attempted
doubtless by which some overt act could
be made in order that their st .lwart oppo
nent could be demolished. After anxious
solicitude on their part, to the shame o(
Dr. Felton and his followers, the matters
brought forward against this pure and up
right Georgian are nothing but a rehash of
the fulse ami trumped-up charges of the
late campaign, put forth under the foster
ing care and protecting icgis of a petticoat.
The Senator is eminently correct, we
think, in discarding altogether Mrs. Felton
from the controversy and driving the pon
iard homo to the real antagonist, her wily
husband. The Senator owed it as a duty
to himself and to the grand old State that
honors and loves him to make the ringing
denunciation that he has made—not that
her confidence in him was one particle
abated or shaken, but that vile slanders
so greatly merit when they are aimed, as in
this case, at a character jvhich in war and
in peace stands out in bold relief untarn
ished and mini ailed.
After reviewing his connection with the
life insurance company, the publishing
company, and the intimation that lie had
wronged a Bishop, all of which are clearly
and satisfactorily explained, the Senator
spurns with a just feeling of indignation
the charge that Ins ollicial act had ever
been swayed by venal considerations. His
own words are so manly, vigorous and con
clusive, we give them in his exact language':
Yet till* man—faint* to Mm pimple in war : false to
the political organization which mvctl liis people in

was recently burned. The building w*as
not quite finished, had cost 8150.000, and
Dr. J. A. Broadus was to preach the ded

I thought I had as good a rite to ride in

It had lookin’glasses all in it. inity nice.
I sot an’ looked in won all the way—not at

whether they war mine or whose they war.
lie tole me I was too late, so I went to the
shelter (they've got one thar. too) an’ axed
the ticket man what time the railrode
would leave, for I was in a hurry. He
sawter tailed, and axed me w hich won 1
was goin* on. I told him the same won 1

hot iron an’ let it stay thar till it got cold,
then they liitc cd bosses to it an' pulled

they wouldn’t make ’em before Monday,
that somebody had fooled us in the time.
We had to leave an’ didn’t git to sec ’em

you may judge by that that we had a good
