On Monday last the mountains lying
north and northeast of us were white with
snow, and made a beautiful appearance.
We arc almost afraid to write this much,
for fear the Evening News will call us
mountaineers again, although wc would
not be ashamed of the name, for some of
the greatest and best people ever produced
in Georgia was fetched up in them same
snow-clad mountains. They are a bold,

they make.

The handsome and gentlemanly commer

for a liberal supply of the finest wine we
ever smelled. H e have not tasted it yet
—waiting for some of the family to get
sick. We. ourselves, took a pledge many
years ago not to drink unless we were
sick or wanted it; therefore were afraid to
open it for fear it would vanish like frost
before The Hartwell Sun. If all the
liquor establishments in Georgia were to
get their supplies from his house, delirium
tremendous and drunkness would not be
so common in the land.

A Babe DrOHlicU In a Spring Branch.
Otir town was startled on Saturda) r at
the terrible intelligence that little Charlotta
infant daughter of G. W. and Mattie Wil
son. who live about seven miles west of
Hartwell, was drowned that evening be
tween two and three o’clock. The child
was about 1G months old, and was running
about the yard. It was very fond of its
grandfather. Mr. Reuben Williford, and it
is thought had gone to meet him and fell in
the spring branch, which is only a little
ways from the house. When the mother
missed it she hunted around, calling it;
but receiving no answer, became alarmed
and went to the spring, where she found
the poor little innocent lying in the branch
—dead. She picked it up in her arms and
ran with it to her father and husband who
were at work in the field, and every means
was used to resuscitate it. but all in vain.
The whole family are plunged in the deep
est grief. They are inconsolable. May
God in the plenitude of His mercy soften
this sad blow to the stricken parents. It
’ s a strange coincidence that three mem
oers of branches of this family, bearing
the same name were drowned. The child
was buried at Hendry's Church Sabbath

Goats.
Where did they come from? For 25
years a goat has been a stranger in the
city. In one day’s time our streets are
crowded with them, and the piazzas look
like apothecary shops. All the farmers
for fifty miles around must have s(c)ent
their whole stock of these accursed little
left-handed animals here on the same night.
A fellow can’t find a single ripe chinaberry
to take the bad taste out of his mouth, and
the town smells like a guano depot. The
smell and taste of goat is in everything wc
eat, and the very air we breathe is tainted
as it were with impalpable goat powder.
Wc have no doubt the devii was the origi
nator of the first goat, and wc wish he had
every one of them noscing around his old
club feet at this very moment. If Noah
had any goats aboard of his ark, it is a
pity they bad not been thrown overboard
in the raging floods, and if they bad not
been drowned perhaps they would have
some of the stink washed off of them. No
more at this time on goats.

which there was made an abundance. 11.
J. Goss, Esq., of Elbert county, formerly,

Place. Mr. Goss has not lost anything of
his politeness and kindness by becoming a
citizen of Hart count)-. lie lias cleared
land, made fences, trimmed the borders of
those ample lowgrounds, fixed the ditches,
and, in fact, done all that it seems possible
to do in so short a time. Had Capt. Craft
searched the country from the alligator
ponds of Florida to the lakes of Canada he
would not perhaps have secured the servi
ces of a more diligent, industrious super

HOMEBODY'S 4 IIIED.
Somebody’s child is dying—dying with
with the flush of hope on bis young face
and an indescribable yearning to live and
take an honored place in the world beside
the companions of Ids youth. And some
body’s mother is thinking of the time when
that dear face will be hidden where no ray
of hope can brighten it—when her heart
and home will be desolate—because there
was no cure for consumption. Reader, it
the child be your neighbor’s, take this com
forting word to the mother’s heart before
it is too late. Tell her that consumption
is curable, that men are living to-day,
aged robust men. whom the physicians
pronounced incurable at the age of twenty
live, because one lunyhad been almost des
troyed by the disease. Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medical'Discovery is a most efficient al
terative for separating the scrofulous mat
ter from the blood and lungs, and impart
| i n g strength to the system. It has cured
! hundreds of consumptives.

Wo mot W, B. Wynn in Atlanta a few
days ago. It is astonishing how teinpus
keeps fugiting; last time wo saw Bill was
in IS3B. lie was a stout, lively boy then,
clerking for old Uncle Jack at Anderson,
S. C. The old man owned a stock-farin
and mill near Six Milo mountain in Pick
ens Comity, and Bill was going up to burn
the woods and get up feed for the cattle.
A pigeon roost was said to be in full blnst
near the Six Mile mountain. At that time
the writer was a young merchant at Pen
dleton, S. and joyous, rolicking Bill
Wynn came along on his pony, with his
double-barrel gun and the necessary outfit
for a night at the roost. It did not take
much persuasion to induce us to go along
with him. When we got within a few
miles of the mountain. Bill got out his
box of matches and we fired tlie woods on
both sides of the road ; the object of firing
them was to enable the grass to put up
carlv in the spring to make a range for tin;
enttlo. When we arrived at the mill the
night was stormy, and the pigeons had re
moved their roost —probably hail heard of
our coming. We stayed all night at a
cabin with one room with a man who had
a large family (nothing remarkable about
that—especially in a mountain country).
This man was noted for one incident in ftis
life. At Pendleton a man was to lie hung
—for taking three dollars and a few ceTits
from his employer, who owed him much
more than that sum, and the young man
expected to settle it, hut his employer
prosecuted him. and at that time stealing
was a hanging offence in South Carolina.
Winchester Foster was then Sheriff at
Pendleton, and a kinder hearted man never
lived. 1k- did not wish to knock the trig
ger loose that would launch the prisoner
into eternity, so he proposed to pay our
host ten dollars to hang tho man, which
he did—and spent the ten dollars at our
store for sugar and coffee.
But to return to our pigeon shooting ;
wc did not kill any. but filled our two
meal sacks with pine tops, killed two
doves, plucked the feathers over the sacks
and our clothing and rode bravely into
town amid the congratulations ot those
wc met.
Bill Wynn is a strict Baptist now. and
is a great worker in the Church—a pious,
good man. The writer signed half a schol

On Wednesday night last J. G. Gibson,
of Oglethorpe, anil C. I). Campbell, of
Athens, lectured on temperance iu the Bap
tist Church. There was quite a crowd
out. and were well entertained; the argu
ments against intemperance were strong
and forcible—we think more so than any
that we have heard in some time. Elber
ton though not the worst of all places, lias
work enough still for reformers to perform.
We believe that if we had a good lecture
upon temperance more fuquen.ly that it
would lie productive of great good.
On Thursday morning, the Sunday
School Convention, under the guidance of
the Sarepta Association, met in the Bap
tist Church for the purpose of determining
whether or not it would be advisable to
have the Annual Sunday School Convcn
! lion in connection with the Association, or
: separate from it ; the conclusion arrived at
was that the Association itself was already
too large, and that if the Sunday School
were brought into it that it would lie an
; imposition upon the community wherever
i they met to entertain them. It was there
■ lore decided to have the Sunday School
I Convention at Lexington on Wednesday
and Thursday before the 4th Sunday in
July next. On Thursday night Mr. Weild,
I of Athens, lectured on Sunday Schools.
Ilis lecture embraced plans of establishing
j schools and of sustaining them after they
I were established. Ilis m-iin argument was
| that the Sunday Schools should be under
j tbt; management of the Churches, and that
Church members should take more inter
est in them, and that every member of the
| Church should be a member of the Sunday
| School.

grandest weddings that has taken place in
Elbert for some lime. May success attend
them as they buffet against the boisterous
