► EXAMINATION AND EXHIBITION
At the Hartwell lllull Nehool, Friday,
May 23d, 1870.
The examination of the classes of this
Institution commenced in the Baptist
Church promptly at 8 o'clock A. M. A
considerable number of the patrons and
friends of the School were present, and
listened, attentively and decorously to the
examination, which was fairly ana impar
tially conducted. The stage had been
tastefully decorated by our ladies, and
presented a bright, cheerful appearance.
In the morning the examination was car
ried on principally by Mr. Peek. Mr. Bobo
having been taken suddenly sick while ex
amining a class. W care glad to state, how
ever. that he recovered sufficiently to take
an active part in the afternoon and evening
exercises. Wo would be glad if we could
give an account of the whole affair just as
it occurred, hut with our limited space,
we can can only give a brief outline. We
are not saying too much, we think, when
we say that patrons were well satisfied
with the advancements their children had
made in thier respective studies, and wo
are satisfied thatmerc will be a still larger
number of pupils in attendance at the fall
session.
The spelling was excellent. Connected
with it was a feature we have never noticed
in any other school—the pronunciation of
words with the proper sounds anil accents.
The pupils, as the teachers stated, were
very deficient in this particular at the be
ginning of the session ; so much so that
they could not pronounce a word properly,
even when they had found it in the diction
ary. with all the necessary marks. Classes
in'pronunciation were accordingly formed,
and daily lessons heard, in which Web
ster's key was taught, and applied. The
result was, the classes could open the dic
tionary' at any place and give ot a page
wills more accuracy than many teachers of j
Jong experience; and. having learned to
pronounce properly, their reading was ex
cellent. Rules for pronunciation are laid
down in our die ionarie*. and we do not
think teachers arc doing their duty who do i
not teach them to tlie pupils.
Wc were struck with the speed with
which classes in arithmetic and algebra
solved very difficult problems ; and to I
show that they understood what they were
doing, some of the pupils illustrated them
on the iMianl. while others rattled them off
very rapidly on their slates—the clicking
of tlie pencils reminding us of the telegraph.
This system of rapid calculating is what
makes expert business men, and wc can
not commend it too highly.
The lines!, works oil English grammar
arc used in this school, and the pupils are
not allowed to lay grammar aside after
memorizing some rules and a few parts of
speech, but they are thoroughly drilled in
the construction and analysis of sentences.
The classes in Latin showed they had not
memorized a few pages, by parsing with
accuracy.
We noticed that some of the ciAfccs in
Geography were composed of grown pu
pil*. and that globes were awarded as
prizes. We see from this fact that the
teachers understand the importance of this
branch, so essential to a good education.
We would make special mention of a
class in rhetoric and one in natural phil
osophy. both of which evinced considera
ble knowledge of these branches, which
are seriously neglected in some of our
schools.
Classes in geometry demonstrated prop
ositions in a manner which showed they
had been well taught in this branch.
Specimens of penmanship were passed
through the audience, and from the im
provement of the pupils since the begin
ning of the session, we infer that the teach
ers have given the proper attention to this
much neglected art.
Where all the pupils acquitted them
selves so well, we refrain from making
particular mention of any for fear of doing
some an injustice.
Col. E. M. Itucker, of Anderson. S. C..
who had been invited, was present, and
entertained the audience about an hour
with a speech that deserves the highest
praise. He touched on various subjects,
tut the parts of his discourse were so well
arranged that tlie change from topic to
topic only rendered it more pleasing. Col.
Rucker is a man of rare abililities and cap
tivating manners, and ever ready to lend a
helping hand to a good cause. From the
people of Hartwell he will ever receive the
warmest welcome.
The Exhibition at night was a most en
tertainin" and enjoyable affair, and as in
the examination, the pupils acquitted them
selves with much credit, and were frequent
ly applauded, and many received iloral off
erings as testimonials of the appreciation
of the audience. Below we give the

the citizens near the calaboose, who found

HOLLOWAY’S PILLS
Nervous Disorders.
WliAt in more fearful than a broking down of the
nervous system ? To be excitable or nervous in n

remedy be found ? There is one:—drill* but little
wine, beer, or spirits, or far better, none: take no
cotfre—weak tea being preferable; get all the fresh
air you can ; take three or four Tills every night
eat plenty of solids, avoiding the use of slops; and it
these golden rules are followed, you will be happy In

Mothers and Daughters.
If there is one thing more than another for which
these Tills an so famous, it is their purifying Drop
ci ties, especially their power of cleansing the Wood
from all impurities, and removing dangerous and
suspended secretions. Cnivor*ally adopted as the
one grand remedy for female complaints, they never
fail, never weaken the system, and always bring
about what is required.
Sick Headaches and Want of Appetite.
These feeling's which so saddon us. most frequent
ly arise from annoyance* or trouble, from obstructed
perspiration, or from eating and drinking what
is unlit for us, thus disordering the liver and
stottiriCli. These organs must be regulated if you
wish to be well. The Tills, if taken according to the
printed iustrirttidhs, will quickly teatore a healthy
action to both liver and stomach, whence follow, as a
natural conseourucc, a good aupetito aud a clear
head. In the Kant and West Indies nonrcely aoy
other nioaicine is ever used fdr these disorders.
How to be Strong.
Never let the lwnvel* b either eojfflhtfd dr undnlv
acted upon. It may appear singular that Holloway's
Pills should be recommended for a run upon the
bowels, many persons sunpoepig that they would In
crease FHaxatfon. This is a great mistake, however i
for these Tills will immediately correct the liver and
stop every kind of bowel complaint. In warm cli
mates thousands of lives have been saved l>v the use
of this medicine, which in all cast s gives tone and
vigor to the whole organic system, however deranged
health and strength follow im: as a matter of course.
The appetite. too, is wonderfully inffelMMl b\ the
use of these Pills, combined in the use of solid in
preference to fluid diet. Animal food is better th&n
broths and stews. B> removing acrid, fermented, or
i other impure humors from the liver, stomach, or
blood, the cause of dysentry, riiarrhena, and othei
Imiwel compliuhta is expelled. The result is, that the
disturbance is arrested, and the action of tho Isiwels
becomes regular. Nothing will stop the relaxation of
the bowels so quickly as this tine correcting medi
cine.
