Cause and Cure for Snoring. A writer in tlie Scientific Monthly tells how the habit of snoring is acquir ed, and. better, how it may be cured. And, first, the cuusc: The air reaches the lungs through two channels, the nose and mouth. The two currents meet in the throat just below the soft palate, the end of which hangs loose and swings backward and forward, pro ducing the snoring. If the air reaches the lungs as it should, through the nose, no noise will be made. If it reaches the same through the mouth, the palate will make more noise, since it is not the natural channel, but when it rushes through both of these channels, then it is that the sound sleeper banishes rest from the pillows of his companions by his hideous noise. The remedy for snoring is to keep the mouth closed ; and for this purpose Dr. Wyeth, the writer of the article referred to, lias in vented an article so cheap that anyone can make it, ami no snorer should be without it. It consists of a single cap, fitting the head snugly, and a piece of soft material fitting the chin. These are connected by elastic webbing, which is connected with a head capjnear the ears. This contrivance prevents the jaws from dropping down, and thereby renders snoring impossible. The great trouble will be to get people to adopt this invention, since the most upright and honest men and women will rarely if ever, confess that they snore, and will be very indignant if accused of it. Asa further inducement to the introduc tion of this contrivance of Dr. Wyeth, it may be added that breathing through the mouth is very detrimental to the health, and that many diseases of the throat and lungs are contracted or ag gravated thereby. A White Race in Africa. London Spectator, June 20th. Major Serpa Pinto, the Portugese traveler in Africa, who recently turned up at Durban, has been lecturing on his travels at Lisbon. In his address, which is translated in the Standard, lie testified distinctly to the existence of a white race in central Africa, living in territory between the Cuchi and the Cubango, lie himself spoke to men of Ids race, whom be describes as “ whiter than Caucasians,” w-ho call themselves Cassequsrs, and are not bad people, al though totally uncivilized. They have tufts of hair on their heads like short wool. They have eyes like the Chinese and are powerful and live a nomadic life. Singular and Fatal. XorthcauUrn rrogretn, IGWi inut. We are informed that Mr. Brantlv Strickland, of Banks county, happened to a singular and fatal accident on last Thursday. Mr. Strickland, we hear, had dammed up a creek on his premises for the purpose of irrigating some part of his land. After the water had risen to a sufficient depth, he concluded to jump in and take a hath ; and in so do ing. it is supposed his head stuck in the mud and his body went over with such force as to dislocate his neck. A broth er-in-law was with him, and rendered all assistance possible; but the poor man died iu eight hours after the occurrence. The Drunkard’s Wife. Deep down in the secret recesses of the neglected and abused wife, what thoughts must suggest themselves as she looks at her bloated and bleared husband. Pinched for the merest ne cessities of life, discomfort and disgrace meeting her at every turn, what must, be the estimate of him who once vowed to love, cherish and protoether, llis wantof decent manhood has dispelled every dream of her girlhood, and in its stead is hitter, blighting despair, with out one beam of sunshine to light the path of life. If the first hen came from an egg, where did the egg come from? A well-digger in Waco, Texas, finds out where to cotnmeuce digging lor wa ter by scattering a few crawfishes on the ground; wherever they commence to burrow there water is sure to be found. A befuddled horseman. There was once a gentleman whose morning dram had been a little too much for him, and who, in saddling his horse, got the wrong end first. A friend came uj> and called his attention to the mistake. The horse man gazed a moment at the intruder, as if in deep thought, and said : “ How do •you know which way lam going?” A newspaper is a window through •which men look out upon the world. Without a newspaper a man is shut up in a small room and knows little or nothing of what is happening outside •of himself. In our day the newspaper will keep a sensible man in sympathy with the world’s currant history. It is an unfolding encyclopedia ami an un bound book, forever issuing and never finished. Always bear this in mind, and never fail to take, and more partic ularly pay for your home paper. Mutilated silver coins, dollars, half dollars and dimes, with holes punched through them, are getting into t in illa tion. It is not, perhaps, generally known that for any person to subtract a portion of the silver or gold from coin of the United States so as to make it of less weight or value than it ought to be pur suant to law is a statuable offense, which is punishable by imprisonment for not more than two years, and by a fine of not more than two thousand dollars. It is a mean thing to mutilate the coins of the country, even a part from the pur pose of effecting a little gain thereby, as it destroys the beauty of their artistic appearance. It may appear stufmlur that Holloway a I’ills should be recommended for a run upon the bowels, many persons supposing that they would in crease relaxation. This ia a great mistake, however: for these Pills will immediately correct the liver and stop every kind of bowel complaint. In warm cli mates thousands of lives have been saved bv the use of this medicine, whiclt in all eases gives tone and vigor to tlie whole organic system, however defanged health and strength following as a matter of course.
