A Wicked Old Gentleman
Nice old gentleman he was ; big white
waistcoat, low cut shoes, bald head and
silver bowed spectacles. He led in the
Binging on Sunday evening in the hotel
prttar, and sang that old fashioned bass
in “Coronation,” aud “Chiua” in that
to'id sonorous up aud down style which
twuntry choiristers used to practice in
Accompanying the big fiddle and withal
had the bland benevolent look of a good
old up country deacon.
He was “ lookiug round the house ”
next night, and stepped in where some
of the boys were playing cards —some-
'thing where they were talking of” calls”
•and “ raises” and “ seeing.” The boys
looked a little disconcerted, hut the old
'man didn’t say anything, till the baud
was played out, uud one of the paity,
under pretence of having an engage
ment, winked to the others and said he
jnust go, intending to break up till the
i old mau had gone away and then resume
the game. But he had scarce turned
his hack when the aged visitor remark,
•ed:—
" I wonder he hndu’t' raised’ ye with
Abe hand he held."
“ Do you understand the game?” usk
ed one of the party, tuking a cigar from
his mouth.
“ Wall, a leetle—l’ve seeu ’em playin’
on it, and sometimes thort that I’d like
to take a hand jest fur fun.”
‘‘Just so,” said another, “suppose
you try a game or two with us.”
“ Wall, I don’t mind, jes fur the fun
‘ er the thing,” So the old man sat down
and with a good deal of instruction
* maioaged to get through the game and
won on the penny ante. “Thar,” said
he, “if that feller that's gone had been
spunky and put iu five dollars, he’d get
it instead of eight cents, wouldn’t lie?”
“ Why certainly,” said one of the
young men, “ certainly, it’s your deal,
uncle; now why don’t you go in for a &. r )
ante?"
“ Wall,” said the old fellow throwing
around the cards, “ I dunno hut I will,
but I hain’t got nothin’ but a twenty
dollar hill that I drew outen the bank to
come here with.”
“ Well, uncle," said the other, gather
ing up and glancing at his cards, “I’ll
go you twenty, and you can put it in the
i missionary box when you win it if you
like."
“Shol so I ken,” said the old man.
I don’t think it would be gambolliu’ at
all ef that’s the case.”
‘‘Not at all said the other,” winking
to his companions.
“ Wall, then I don’t care if I go yon
this other fitly —but 1 ’spose ye’ll think
I’m doin’ on it to scare ye—but our de
nomination's tarual poor, and a big con
tribution is just what their haukerin’s
arter.”
“ Oh, no, I cover your fifty, uncle, we
ought to be liberal you know," and so
the game went on till finally tho old
man remarked : “ Well I’d no idee 1
had this ere roll of bills in my pocket—
so ye call do ye?—five hundred dollars
■ U P1 —yes, ye have got three picters—
three queens and a jack ! Wall, ’tis
kinder queer I got ’tother queen —haw !
.haw! haw !”
“ Yes, I'm sorry for you, but what
are your other cards?’’ said the young
man triumphantly.
“ Well, three on ’em ez kings—why
dura it, all that ere pot o’ money’s mine,
young feller !" said he, stretching out a
powerful paw and squeezing the bills
out of the hand of the young man who
had already begun to roll them up.
“ Perhaps mister you like to take your
hand again,” said he to the other who
had returned meantime, “ they aregoin’
to sing some psalm tunes up stairs be
fore going to bed and I promised to jiue
era.
“ There was a blank look of amaze
ment in that circle ns he left, and the
thought forced itself into more than one
mind of the danger of trusting to ap
pearances.
Monticello Cor. Macon Telegraph:
Dr. J. G. Elder, a practicing M. D.
of note in onr town and county, louglit
a lot of chickens, which he cooped up
to fatten. 11 is cook took from the
coop a hen that had been so confined
for a month or more and killed it, and
while cleaning it noticed a curiously
shaped sacque or bag, attached to the
.egg sacque, which began to move in
*ber hands. She threw it with the en
trails out of the window. Dr. Elder’s
little boy, who was in the kitchen, saw
it and went out doors at once and
broke open the bag, and seeing some
thing moving lie thought it was a lizard
and struck and killed it. Dr. Elder
coming up at the time saw and exam
ined it. and it proved to be a perfect
formed little dog, about three inches
long. He took it and the sacque, and
lias both now in alcohol. This strange
little animal does not simply resemble
a dog, but is a perfect one. You can
even see the little nails of his feet, his
tongue, etc. Can any one explain this
wonderful freak of nature ? It has
been examined by all the M. D's here
and many of our citizens, and no jh>B
- theory can account lor his strange
existence within the hen. Dr. Elder
offers to send the bottle containing the
dog and the sacque to any medical so
ciety or physician who will pay the ex
press on on it and promise to return it.
Nancy Jane l’ratt, of Iroquois coun

“ Oh, you a*n't in any danger; I ainl

turned, went into the house, came out
witli a gun, opened fire on the hunter
and killed his dog. The man threw up

to murder me?” The farmer’s wife an
swered : “ Oh, you ain’t in any danger;
I ain’t huntin’ for fools?” and hero she
brought the gun again to her shoulder,
while the chap yelled louder than be

Joint came out. Many pieces of bone came out of

DISEASE WITH ITS AGONIES:
CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM.
HOLLOWAY’S PILLS
Nervous Disorders.
What is more fearful than a breaking down of the
nervous system I To be excitable or nervous ill a
small degree is most distressing, for where can a
remedy be found I There is one :—drink but little
wine, beer, or spirits, or far better, none ; take no
coffee—weak tea being preferable; get all the fresh
air you can; take three or four Pills every night;
eat plenty of solids, avoiding the use of slops; and if
these golden rules arc followed, you will be happy in
mind and strong in body, and forget you have any
nerves.
Mothers and Daughters.
If there is one thing more than another for which
these Pills are so famous, it is their purifying prop
erties, especially their power of cleansing the blood
from all impurities, and removing dangerous and
suspended secretions. Universally adopted as the
one grand remedy for female complaints, they never
fail, never weaken the system, out! always bring
übont what *s required.
Sick Headaches and Want of Appetite.
These feelings which so sadden us. most frequent
ly arise from annoyances or trouble, fitun obstructed
perspiration, or from eating and drinking what
is in it for us, thus disordering tile liver and
stoma li. These organs must he regulated if you
wish to Im> well. The Pills, if taken according tot lie
printed instructions, will quickly restore a healthy
action to both liver and stomach, whence follow, as a
natural consequence, a good appetite and a clear
head. In the East and West- Indies scarcely any
other medicine is ever used for these disorders.
How to be Strong.
"Never let the bowels bo either confined or unduly
note 1 upon. It may appear singular that Holloway’s
Pills should be recommended for a run upon the
Iniwels. many persons supposing that they would in
crease relaxation. This is a great mistake, however;
for these Pills will immediately correct the liver and
stop every kind of bowel complaint. In w arm cli
mates thousands of lives have I>*m*ii saved bv the use
of this medicine, wl ll in all rases gives tour and
v igor to the whole organic system, however deranged
—health and strength following as a matter of course.
The appetite, too, is wonderfully increased b\ the
use of these Pills, combined in the use of solid in
preference to fluid diet. Animal f. iis better than
broths and stews. By removing acrid, fermented,or
other impure humors from the liver, stomach, or
blood, the cause of dysentry, diarrluea. and other
bowel complaints is expelled. The result is, that the
disturbance is arrested, am! the action of the bowels
becomes regular. Nothing will stop the relaxation of
the bowels so quickly as this tine correcting medi
cine.
Disorders of the Kidneys.
In all diseases affecting these organs, whether they
secrete t**o much or too little water : or whether they
be afflicted with stone or gravel, or with aches aud
pains settled in tin loins over ♦he regions of the kid
neys. these Pills should be taken according to the
pijnted directions, and the Ointment should be well
rubbed into the small of the Imck at bedtime. This
treatment will give almost immediate relief when all
means have failed.
For Stomachs out of Order.
No medicine will so effectually improve the tom* of
the stomach as these Pills : they remove all acidity,
occasioned either by intemperance or improper diet.
They reach the liver and reduce it to a healthy ac
tum : they are wonderfully efficacious in eases of
spasm-in foot they never tail iu curing all disorders
of the liver ami stomach.
Holloway's Fills arc the I test knoten remedy in the
World for the following diseases :
