Lapt. Johnson says tax receipts arc steady, but not much in demand. Real estate is advancing rapidly since the completion of the Hartwell Railroad. Enough rails floated down the Savanuah on Monday to fence one side of the count v. Page k Maxwell's new chimney fell on Sunday night. The big rain undermined it. W. L. Goldsmith, agent for P. Zell A Sons, dealers in fertilizers, was in Hart well last week. Prof. Garst will lecture to-uight (Tues day) in the Academy cm phrenology anti physiognomy. Hodges' and Henson's mills were both stopped by the heavy waters for a short time Monday. Sing Richardson aays he wrung his other sock last Sunday. This accoants for the large moisture. Garst, the phrenologist, did a big busi ness in Hartwell last week, fectfhg the people’s bumps. Several Carolinians hare been blockaded by the heavy waters this week, and are unable home. Mr. John Maxwell's well wail, which he had just had put in, caved in on Sunday last. Too much rain. Nancy Hart scared Capt. Craft’s mules on Monday, and they ran away with the wagon. Et tu Brute ! T. W. Norris, n rising young gentleman of Anderson county, S. C., paid us a pleasant call on Monday. James E. Vickery will open his singing school at Cross Roads Academy, Elbert county, on the 29th inst. The Anderson (8. C.) Journal says the Hartwell Railroad is a “monument to the enterprise of Hart county.” Miss Sallic Lou Skelton, a charming young lady of Anderson county. S. C„ is visiting friends in Hartwell. Dr. Mathews’ little boy Bodic was thrown from a horse on Monday and hurt considerably, hut not seriously. We are glad to state that Dr. W. 11. Page has sufficiently recovered from his recent illness to resume his practice. The cotton boom is weakening and cot ton is falling with a rush. Fears are en tertained that prices will continue to go down. The Augusta Chronicle says Rev. J. A. Monday is located at Bowman Baptist Church in Hart county. It should be El bert eonnty. Little Johnnie, son of Mr. E. B. Benson, has been quite ill with diphtheria for the past week. We hope soon to chronicle his recovery. Dates, gathered from the tallest palms in the Holy Land, just received at Jim Webb's little store round thecorner—close by Bobo's Hotel. We heard a drummer say the other day that the Weaver House at Bowersville was the best eating bouse he put up at between here and Baltimore. Married, on the 4th inst., at the resi dence of Hon. Wm. Myers, by Rev. J. 11. McMullan, Mr. W. C. Myers and Miss X. C. Neal—all of Hart. There were two social gatherings in town on Monday night, and both of them were well attended and enjoyed. Competition will give life to anything. We have warned our people to watch out for their locks, windows and doors— we repeat that warning. There are seve ral suspicious characters lurking about. Tax ti. fas. are being written now, but all who will come while I am writing them will be relieved of cost. J. L. Johnson, T. (J. Jud McMullan advertised for a miller, and 1 1 ad more applications than he could accommodate; but he has a good miller now. and is ready to grind either Hour or meal. Last week Rev. J. A. Munday canvass ed Hartwell in favor of the Gainesville Fe male College with considerable success. His sermon on Tuesday night was a tine effort. The colored people are beginning to take advantage of the homestead law. They are an imitative people ; so if the white people wish them to do what is right, they must set the example. We heard a little boy say yesterday that he stuck a nail in his foot and it went to the hollow. •* Went to the hollow !” we exclaimed. Yes quoth the sauce box —“ I hollered.” We are sorry to state that Mr. W. It. Brown, a highly respected citizen of this county, died on the Dth inst., of typhoid pneumonia, lie leaves a wife and two children to mourn his absence. Fresh parched ground peas and chest nuts, with worms, <kc., pickod out, cheap at Jim Webb's little store, close to Bobo’s hotel, where yon will always find every thing good to eat at the lowest prices. A negro man was caught skulking around ye editor's smoke-house Monday night, but being discovered he fled without the hack hones and spare ribs. Verily, what a longing one little hog engenders. On Thursday last, the Directors of the H. R. R. and their familes and others had a little excursion up to the thriving town of Bowersville. The day was very in clement, but the crowd enjoyed Umnixelfc* very wall, particularly the good eating at the fatuous hotel* of Bowersville. Some of our patrons desire us to give the price of cotton. We have uot been quoting the price for tho simple reason the price varies two or three time* a day, and to give the prices in a w eekly paper simply amount* to nothing. W* were in Benson's cotton yard one day last week and heard a cotton buyer aay to a man from an adjoining county : “ Do you know the price of cotton in your townF” “ Oh, yes," he replied; “ 1 sold some there yes terday.” •• Well, what is th price! 1 ” “Twelve and u half cents.” “Look at those two samples there and tell us what you think, they would bring there.’* “It would bring 11 cents," was the reply. “Is that all !** Taking another look he said: “It might bring 11J cents.” “Well," said the cotton buyer, “ I have just paid those men there 12 cents cash for it. We have noticed the prices current in some of tho weekly papers, and they are not changed on many articles more than once a year. But to gratify some of our pa trons wo will give the prices of fodder, corn, peas, Ac., although there Is precious little of that sort of produce to sell in this county. To tho old fellow who wants bis paper stopped bccauso we don't quote fod der, Ac., we will say, we are sorry to lose his patronage, but as ho is old enough to die—and It would have been better fof* him if he had done so yearaago—if he wilt call on us we will give him a through ticket to heaven—but whether he can get there on it is another thing. We have no doubt if Fcter was to recognize the through ticket 1 and let him through the gate, he wouldn't j be there 15 minutes before ho would be j dictating to God Almighty bow to manage j the business of iieaVen. We have a tinware manufacturing es tablishment in Hartwell, and a clever gen tleman at the head of it. Now we think the merchants in the county ought to buy their ware from him, and the merchants of Hartwell ought to give up the tin trade to him. It is a very great convenience to the citizens of town and county to have such a concern here, and the little profit that our town merchants make on tinwure they conld make on something else. The Carolina tin peddlars have no right to sell j their ware in Georgia, and should boar- I rested every time they put in an appeur ance in this county. It is not giving our own people a fair chance. A man broke open the window of T. P. Harris A Co.’s grocery store about half past seven o'clock last Sunday night. IMnk had just retired in a room above the store, and hearing a noise, hastily jumped out of bed and struck a match, which fright ened the thief so that he preeipately fled through the window ho entered, leaving some of his tools. We have no doubt the scoundrel will be sentenced I)3* Judge Bot tle at the next court. Pity the crime is not a banging offence, but there is no crime for which a person can be hung in this glo rious homesteading, whitewashing State. Prof. Garst, of Atlanta, the Phrenolo gist, has been in town for the last week, and has given several very interesting en tertainments at the Academy. In his blindfold examinations be not only de scribes character with wonderful accuracy, but he also gives the build of the person, the features and the color of the hair and eyes. At his last lecture he held the com plete attention of his audience for near two hours. He will lecture again to-night (Tuesday), and will have a large audience, doubtless. Mr. A. M. Culpepper, one of our sub- j scribers in Jackson county, is a tine farmer j as the following figures will show, lie made this year on rented land w ith one { mule, assisted by his daughter and little son, 233 bushels of wheat, 132 bushels ofj oats, 500 bushels of corn, seven bales of cotton averaging 471 pounds each, 100 bushels of potatoes, plenty of meat to do him, and cabbages till you can't rest. This shows w’hat a tenant of energy can do in Northeast Georgia. Misses Vinnie Burriss and Maggie Dan nelly, of Anderson county, is. C., are vis iting the family of lion. F. B. llodgcs. Miss Dannclly is the youngest child of Kev. ■ James Dannellv, the world renowned j Methodist preacher of Georgia or South Carolina (both States claimed him). We j heard him preach fifty years ago, and have known numbers of people to go forty miles to hear him, and he conld always draw bigger congregations than any Bishop. On Saturday night a tremendous rain set in lasting until Sunday night, when it 1 broke off clear, cool and windy. The Savannah rose to an unusual height, and 1 all streams were overflowing. The fresh embankments on the 11. R. R. were con-; siderably washed in many places and the cars were detained for some time in con sequence. Freshets and droughts are lie coming unpleasantly partial to this section. The schedule on the Elbertou railroad has been changed, and trains now run as follows : Leave Toccoa 8:00 A. M.; arrive at Elberton 12:00 M ; leave Elberton 2:02 P. M.; arrive at Toeeoa 6:05 P. M. El berton is displeased with the change, and Toccoa is correspondingly elated. Trains on the Hartwell Railroad make connection at Bowersville. If there is a man so lost to religion and decency as to be a habitual swearer, we would like to employ him to blaspheme the d—dadrotted goats that hold converse sweet on our piazza at night. Wages no object. No Irish or Dutch need apply— | we want plain English language, such as [ we can understand aud appreciate. A. # G. McCurry, Esq., holds his law of fice in the Sheriff’s room of the Court House, north-west comer, next Pi the Brown building, where ho will be pleaded to see his friends and clients. Everybody is cord ally invited to attend the pound party t the Acadriuy Christ mas F.ve night and contribute their pounds. Ladies wishing to contribute whole cakes will be permitted to do so unmolested. Tho Hartwell Debuting Society decided on last Thursday night that ” The protec tive tariff is not hetielictal to the United States.” Question for next debate : ** Is the homestead law benctiOial to Georgia f” About three hundred yards of the Kl herton Air-Line Railroad was washed up by the freshet on Sunday, and consequent ly we failed to receive any mail on Mon day. Such weather is heavy on railroads. Lily, Dr. W. 11. McCutry's little girl, fell off - a plank resting on the sills of an unbundled rooia. and broke her collar bone ou a piece of timber on last Wednes day. The little suflVrrr is doing very well. Don't forget to attend the ratlh at Jim I Webb's store on Christmas day. For 25 cents you may get an elegant picture or watch. The beauty of the plan is. that them will he only ten chance* on each article. A man bought an oil tablecloth yester day. His companion asked: ” What Is that?” " It's an oil cloth.” “Oh, yes; it's good to keep off the rain." “ Yes. and it's good to eat on—you never do have to wash it!” We had a pleasant call from Mr. Marion Cheek, on* of the prominent business men of Bowersville, last week, lie handed us some greenbacks, and left us happier than he found us. lie is doing a good business ' at Bowersville. A lady stepped into one of our stores re cently and asked to look nt some fine 1 lady’s hose. The clerk handed her down several pairs which had fancy work in bright colors at the tops, when she said she did not like them because the fancy work w as too high up to be seen. Large lot of tobacco at lower prices than have been known since the war at E. B. Benson A Co.'s. W. S. Shields, the polite and gentle manly salesman from that grand old hard- i ware and cutlery house of Findlay A Roberts, of Baltimore, w as here last week, and as usual, sold a number of heavy bills for the spring trade. J. B. Roberts, of tlieirbouse, traveled all over the State ! of Georgia annually before the war, and sold' Hie principal towns and villages. Roberts was considered the handsomest, most gentlemanly and accomplished com mercial traveler that ever sold goods in 1 Georgia, and we think Shields has proven himself a very apt scholar under the teach- j ing of the boss hardware man of the United | States._ The Bine Ridge mountains, which run around us in a sort of a “ circumlobendi quo,” somewhat similar to a horse shoe, J loom up majestically this morning with large tracts covered with snow, and the i patches of blue stone interspersed with j the white, with a clear sky and a bright , sun shining upon them, causes them to present a grand and picturesque scene. But the mountains are fully sixty miles from ua. although the Augusta and other Georgia papers speak of the Hart county mountains, when there is not a better ly ing county in the Elate, and not a foot of land in it that cannot be cultivated com fortably. I am proud of my County for several reasons, namely : First, in point of morality she is at least on an average with her sisters or adjoining counties. Second, Hart county is as healthy as any county in Georgia. Third, Hart county sustains as many schools as any county in North Georgia. Fourth, Religiously Hart county is on an average at least, with those she joins, as an evidence of this our Brother Fariss has returned to labor with us for the third term, and lie loves good people. Fifth, as to industry and pcrseverence Hart county is behind none, as is proven by her crops, and also by the construction i of the Hartwell Railroad in so short time, j This work has been done by as clever a set of men as live in any county, and at ; the proper time. 1 hope the people will re member Capt. Craft by placing hint in our i Legislative counsels. 1 am proud of my county, because we i have one of best the papers in any county published in Hartwell, and conducted by as clever a set of men as ever pushed a quill. Long may The llaktw'kLl, Sun shine to entertain and enlighten all in its !reach. I am proud of my county, because I was ! a pioneer in this section 29 years ago. J. j S. Herndon, A. C. Walters and William Jones and myself all came here about the same time, and have done our part m ele vating the county to its present standard. Last, but not least, I am proud, because 1 know one man in my county that will , soon be 65 years old who has never cheat ed any person out of 10 cents knowingly. This makes me very proud, j May the people of Hart ever sustain 1 themselves in all that is good and honor ' able, is the wish of a citizen of Hart. pop Sihm i, ri-fklr l.nillc*.
